Decent place. Lowest rates around. I found everything to be plain and simple, straight-forward. Also, we were very glad to find a place that allowed our dog. Our room was clean, and cozy. Nice shower, and fine bathroom. Each unit has its own water heater, sho the hot water doesn't get used up by others. For a place built in the 60's or 70's, I think it was just fine. Awesome heater in room. The remote for the tv didn't function fully, but there we plenty of free channels and tv doesn't really matter much anyways. The inn-keeper was very kind and real. Staying at Richards was simple, yet perfect. My husband and I stayed here July 2019. It had a cute (albeit older) wood cabin feel and was a quiet and beautiful place to shower and rest after long days spent outdoors. It is old, not glamorous, but it feels good and peaceful. A great little get away. And you can't beat the location! Across the street is boat/ stand up paddle bored rentals, 6 min in one direction to an ice cream shop, 6 min the other direction to Donner Lake Beach and a pub/restaurant. Perfect! read more

For consecutive two ski seasons I stayed at this place. Yes, it is old and out of fashion. It was good enough for a stay for a couple of nights. You cannot beat the price and location. As a single 60 year old man, I would not hesitate to stay at Richards again. read more

Okay, if i could give this dump a negative rating, i really would. Look, i'm no Miss High Maintenance but i DO have standards. My guy and i were taking a last minute trip to Tahoe so we ended up booking a room at Richards last minute because everything else was full. I knew it was a bad idea after i got off the phone with the owner of this P.O.S. dump because during the entire conversation with him, i just imagined that typical scene in movies where a guy in a plaid shirt, missing teeth, and leathery skin is sitting at the front desk smoking his cigarette and watching a 13 inch TV. anyway, he tells me there's one room left and it would be $85 but he tells my guy it's $95 (too good to be true in Tahoe right? well, you know how the saying goes). so we finally showed up and went to the "office" and there's a sign on the door that says "price varies depending on customer's attitude". So we knocked and were greeted by a leathery skin, plaid wearing, cigarette smoking dude. this is the best part...we paid for the room (he honored the $85 price) and he hands us a pencil. What's the pencil for?? Dude says "the TV in your room really shouldn't be there. the buttons for the power, channel and volume are missing, so you gotta use this pencil to change the channel and such"...WOW. To our horror, we get to the room and it really does look like a run down motel room you see in movies. Life imitates art, huh? The bed had sheets from maybe 1990, stains and all. i'll be surprised if they've been cleaned since then. Luckily we brought our own blanket! The bathroom reeked of...god knows what, and then the shower...why even bother? you're better off being clean not showering. Check out was at 11AM, but we were outta there at 8 the next morning. I guess this dump is still in business because there are those out there who are unfamiliar with the area and were going last minute and just didn't know any better. I want to take this opportunity to do a little public service, dear Yelpers. You're better off sleeping in the car than staying in this shit hole. read more

So i called this place and spoke with the lady there informing her that i read her yelp reviews and they are extremely bad and would like to cancel my reservation due to her bad reviews, I was hoping she was going to tell me this is wrong give us a chance to show you we have good customer service and I was willing to give them one chance to prove these reviews wrong. Good: The price was really low around the area. The room was spacious and cozy. You can park the car very close to the door. The new heater was powerful and quiet despite the blind door might leak heat. (The heater was above one of the bed, making the two beds' temperature somewhat different.) There was a fridge freezer and a microwave, which also acted as a clock. A small flat screen TV. Not good: There was no dresser in the room. Instead there was an additional sofa bed. No hangers in closet. Sometimes the Wifi did not work. No shampoo in bathroom, soaps only. No hair drier. No hot water for hand washing. But there was hot water for shower. The bathroom had no ventilation than the window to the outside and door to the room. This was why I gave 3 star, otherwise I might give 4. I stayed for two nights but when I came back for the 2nd night, I found there was no house keeping -- there was no such thing like a "do not disturb" sign in the room. read more

Seriously creepy guy and horrible rooms. don't be fooled by the 'rustic look' ...the place is awful. No soap in the room; the shower is smaller than in my RV and falling apart; the hot water heater works for about 4 minutes; the price was $30 higher than a respectable place that I stayed the night before in Tahoe City; the creepy guy said it included breakfast but the next morning there was no breakfast...not even coffee...and he had his door locked at 11:00 AM. He opened the door a crack and peered out like he was afraid of something. And he should be. He's clearly got something wrong with him. The place across the street that's right on the lake is quite nice and not anymore expensive. Some of the rooms have real kitchens. Avoid Richard's Motel. I mean REALLY avoid it. It is unclean, falling apart, and quite possibly dangerous to single females (as Rebecca J. indicated in her review). I'm going to ask the Truckee police to look into his false claim of "includes breakfast," and I'm going to stop payment on my credit card for the one night I stayed there. It's THAT bad. You cannot beat the location for the price. Hands down. I was worried before arrival.....how can it be clean or fully functioning at this price? But the small flat screen TV works great, the room was quite large...the shower was tiny (boyfriend could hardly turn around in it) but clean and great water pressure. Heater cover fell off, but whatever..the heater worked very well and easy to operate. Huge plus was parking directly outside of our room. Walls are thin, so if you're a light sleeper and end up next to a noisy person - beware. We will definitely stay here again! read more

My son and I stayed here for a night and thought it is a great place to stay. I must admit I was a little concerned by two of the previous reviews, but thought they might be about an expectation mismatch between guest and location. The place is definitely old fashioned - I'm referring to the office and even the man working there. Despite appearance (not too dissimilar from Sally T's description), he was friendly and helpful. The room we stayed in was genuinely rustic, cozy and clean (carpet, bedding, bathroom, no odors). The room had a fridge and microwave so you could be fairly self sufficient if you wanted to stay longer. And the place is ten minutes drive from Sugar Bowl if you use the old Highway 40. I have met the owners and both seem very nice and respectful people. In reply to the two previous reviewers, we have stayed at the Richards Motel many times over the years and we've found it to be clean and neat. No, its not the Tahoe Biltmore, but it is what it is, a simple Old Tahoe-style place with natural wood finishes in a pine tree setting. That's obvious with one look of the exterior. We have also found the owner Dennis to be friendly and accommodating of anything we ever needed including additional towels, pillows, etc. As far as a "free breakfast", that's never been offered to us. The office is way too small for serving breakfast. For the rates charged in a vacation setting, it's ridiculous to expect a free breakfast. Finally, concerning the reviews that I would consider slanderous, if these people were dissatisfied with owner's looks or the rustic-style accommodations, why didn't they just turn around and leave? ...not fancy...however, a great deal...a lot of history...and in a good location!!! Richard's Motel...is not the Ritz-Carlton however, it has provided me and many other people that I have referred there...a great place to stay, when in the Truckee and Tahoe area. The prices are good and the cabin like units are warm and have character. The racoons that visit the property and the bears..too! are all part of this rustic country setting, just across the street from the Lake. The family (...the Richards) have maintained this motel for decades. They are good people...plain people and not the hotel resort types...so do not look for that here. However, the reveiw that is posted that suggest issues with sexual issues....is not something that I have ever seen. The husband, wife, and daugter are a nice family and run a decent operations. Initially, the Motel served the people that were preparing to manage the uphill challenge to get over the Donner summit on the Old Road (before the construction of the Interestate 80) and provided accomidations and snow chain services. it has a lot of History within it. The road is now less traveled however, an awesome...must see and must travel road that has breath taking views from each turn in the road. Cliff'Climbers are a rountine sight...the shear cliffs are spectacular...and the resorts at the top of the summit are among the best in the area. All in All....Richards Motel is a good considerations. I am a general contractor and developer...involved in Hawaii and Tahoe Custom Homes Costruction...a family man...and have rented as many as half of the Motel for accomidations of my workers, family, and guest. I do have a very intimate understanding of the owners and their individual character and the underestand the benefits that Richards Inn provides. I am not sure why Yelp has chosen to "not recommend" the other 15 reviews about Richards Motel...mostly favorable. The 8 year old review by Sally T, the disenchanted princess, is totally out of date, and completely unfair. People have been going there for years, knowing they can stay across from the lake in a lovely, rustic setting, at a very reasonable price. I lived there in the one bedroom kitchen apartment for 6 years. Dennis was always there to help me with car trouble, snow removal, anything I needed. You get what you pay for. The rooms are clean and comfortable with cable, fridge and microwave. You can't beat the location. Dennis and Lana are kind, helpful people...just real people..not creepy, and not snotty snobs from the city. Yelp should take the old, brutal, unfair reviews off the top, and include the more honest, and recent reviews on the top. Shame on you Yelp read more

4 days before the trip, looking for an affordable motel. We found "Richard's Motel" through online and yes we did read {yelp}. My family and I read the reviews and my daughter went completely nuts.. But, when we arrived, my family and I entered the office room, with an old man (Dennis, the owner) who was fortunately not a "creep" or a "pervert"... We stayed 2 nights, with no disturbance or any weirdness.. My family and I only came for sleeping at night and for cleanse.. Also, my daughter and younger son had wonderful adventures in the back of "Richard's Motel" with two of Dennis's sleds for visitors.. I swear.. This, by my opinion.. This is the place you NEED to go.. $85 per night? Everything else is always 100 plus, 200 plus, 300 plus.. All those other people that are making these reviews are putting "Richard's Motel" out of business. That is just not right.. Please.. Just please.. Don't listen to others. read more

Last year I did some major work on my house in Truckee ( interior paint and carpets cleaned throughout). I wanted to give the paint and carpet plenty of time to dry and allow the house to air out completely before I returned. I spent a few days at Richards Motel while this was going on. I found Dennis at the desk to be personable and friendly. My room was clean and most of all quiet. The cost of the room was certainly reasonable. I enjoyed a few days of solitude with beautiful Donner Lake right across the street. When it was time to check out, Dennis personally came out to inquire as to weather everything was satisfactory with my stay. I told Dennis the same thing that I'm stating in this review. Recently, I had the enjoyable experience of staying at this motel. I found it to be quaint and nostalgic, reminding me of motels I stayed in while traveling with my parents. I wish I would have seen the previous review before booking a room here, but it was a last minute ski trip and all other hotels were full. I called ahead and he said the room price was $85, when I told him that I wanted it lower, he asked if I was alone and how old I was. When he found out I was a 19 yr old female, he lowered it to $65. I checked in pretty late, apologized for the time and he said "at least you're cute". In the morning, when he found out that I actually had my boyfriend and brother with me, he started treating me very badly - and my tire was slashed. He offered to help me, as long as I'd make my own bed. I foolishly agreed, but when he came into my room while I was making the bed, that was enough. To say this guy was a creeper is an understatement. When he realized that I wouldn't pay attention to him anymore he made me move my truck, flat tire and all out of his parking lot. Wow.
