"Kiwi-hot or Chinese-hot?" The first time I have ever been asked this when ordering Asian cuisine. Of course I went for Chinese-hot, because I think I'm hardcore or something. The friendly lady tucked in this noodle nook on Queen Street was dubious but I touted my Singaporean roots ("My mum's from Singapore, I *know* Chinese-hot") and she happily went about putting together my dish of cold rice noodles.
You could easily walk past Rice Noodle Lover but then you'd miss out on a cheap tasty lunch or dinner. For $6.50 I got a large serving that came in a bowl with a lid; great value for money and easy to take the leftovers home later. There aren't any pictures of the dishes but I just asked the lady before I ordered and she told me what was in it.
As it turns out, I massively overestimated my ability to cope with the burning fires that soon raged inside my mouth, but the flavour - while I still had tastebuds - was really nice. But it was SO HOT. It shouldn't have come as a surprise; you'd think that the huge chillis on the sign would have given it away. Although I would definitely go back again even if it meant the shame of ordering Kiwi-hot instead. My mother would be so disappointed. read more
