Hey look, I'm still here! I will finally be graduating in May after 2 years full-time and 5 years part-time. I've seen a lot since I've been here so long. My previous review still stands, but I've also uncovered a lot more awful things about this place, hence the demotion to two stars. The food is horrendous. Awful. Inedible. They force every student to pay a fee for the dining center every semester. On top of that, you either have to buy a meal plan or pay for the food. Both options are severely overpriced. The dining center has way too many administrators and state employees to pay, so they seriously cut corners with the food. Buildings are falling apart. They did just get some state money to do renovations, but because this is a state institution it's going to take years before anything actually happens. Yeah, and you look down the road at PC and watch an entire building go up in less than 6 months... The state unions here do nothing but protect the people who suck at their jobs. If you're ever trying to get anything important done with your academic records, expect it to be a huge project because nobody cares about you and nobody wants to do any work. SO MANY professors here need to retire, especially in computer science. They're teaching outdated software and skills that you will never ever use. This college gears toward working-class families, yet offers hardly any night classes. Balancing work and school is a major struggle as it is, and this place makes it harder. That ONE class you NEED will always be offered in one section at 2pm on Monday and Wednesday so you'll never be able to have a normal 9-5 day job and get a degree from here. If you can manage to get a decent job on campus, you may have better luck with the work/school balance, but they're not easy to come across since everybody wants one. New Hall is beautiful, but the rest of the dorms are gross. The two years that I lived on campus were awful and I was sick all the time from the mold and dust buildup. Nice things: BEAUTIFUL, awesome new rec center with free aerobics classes and a pool. Active, involved student media orgs that put out a great newspaper, radio broadcast, and TV station. Student Government that tries really hard to fix stuff, even though they are small in numbers. Lots of free help on campus such as tutoring, counseling, and career advisement. Some really awesome professors that go out of their way to see you succeed.

Although I graduated a number of years ago the lessons I learned and the strong moral foundation I received at PC stays with me every day. It gave me a strong academic foundation that eventually led me to the career I follow today. Founded in 1917, PC is steeped in intellectual traditions that date back centuries and have withstood the ravages of fashion and change. The lengthy Development of Western Civilization program provides a strong liberal arts foundation for all students and encourages a sense of scholarly inquiry that pervades every course of study at the college. Moreover, the Dominican tradition encourages a strong faith that engages the heart, mind, and soul. Attending PC, and being a part of the Providence community is a singular experience that changes a person forever - in a good, charitable, and positive way. In rating PC so highly I could talk about the many additions that have been made at the campus over the past few decades. I could go on about its technological improvements, the specialized schools, and all of the good changes and new things that have kept it a truly top-notch four-year institution. However, as a college is only as good as the students it graduates I think a brief example would suffice. Back a couple of weeks ago I entered a series of three races north of Boston. I wore my old PC sweatshirt, and after finishing I ran into a young lady wearing a PC Rugby pullover. She is a teacher, just south of Boston, and impressed me with her dedication to her career, her level of intellectual reasoning, and the overall maturity that she displayed. Over the next two races I saw her, and met some of her fellow graduates and they all impressed me the same way. If, over the course of nearly a quarter century, the quality of PC's graduates is as high as those recent ones, the school has succeeded in its mission quite admirably. St. Thomas Aquinas would be proud.

Not only were the students small-minded, cliquey, and just overall rude and aggressive individuals, but the academics and opportunities within the school are severely lacking. I studied Biology on the pre-med track and was consistently bounced around between three advisors. I never got the guidance that was bragged about when I toured the school and attended each info session. My advisors never knew who I was and always seemed to lead me down the wrong track. I was merely just a kid on the conveyor belt they needed to get out in 4 years. Now as I work through all the errors made during my undergrad years, I look back and curse my advisors and the school as a whole. They guaranteed I struggled for 4 years under their dismissive eyes and now, free from their grips, I'm still having to undo all the messes they left me with. Regardless of what your degree is, this school is not for you. It does not set you up for success; your connections mean nothing and don't translate into the real world; the professors have no pull outside of the gates on Cunningham. This school is a joke of an institution and I should have transferred when I had the chance. I beg you to strongly reconsider your application or acceptance into this establishment. You are wasting your money and your mental health will curse you for years to come. Providence College....do better.

Imagine, if you will, a light saber. Now shrink it, focus it, and make it a precision handheld device. Congratulations - in your mind's eye, you're now wielding a plasma cutter, which is a real tool you can learn to use and put to effective metal-working use after a workshop here - I did just that during a Weekend Welding Workshop and it was tough to wipe the grin off my face for quite a long time. While that might make for some of the coolest visual imagery to describe, the fact that metal grinders, MiG welders, age-old anvils, fine-gauge jewelry-making tools, ceramic works, and myriad other tools of the trade are waiting to be discovered and shared here is a great impetus to get people excited about the art and science of metal-working. The Yard recognized that and has worked hard over the years to forge the foundation, expand the awareness base, and reach out to the community - all experience levels, age ranges, and walks of life. The events here are a super draw for my family and me. The Halloween Iron Pour. The Ultimate Chef competition. The Steel Yard Cruise Night Car Show. I hear there have also been weddings here...which goes to show you don't need to be actively working metal to enjoy the Yard. That said, seeing some of the custom-chopped and augmented vehicles done on-site doesn't hurt one's appetite to grab some leathers and a visor, and get working. I received a request for donation to the Yard's efforts at the end of 2012 that moved to me action in a way that words hadn't called me to in some time. That was refreshing and invigorating; it was merely (at its essence) a request for support. And support we should. The Steel Yard is an anchor helping to revitalize an area of the city that needs it with its facility location; revitalizing a city that can use those services with its good public works, as with its creation of beautiful and utilitarian benches, garbage cans, and bike racks seen around town; revitalizing people's skill sets by providing constructive classes in a variety of disciplines at fair tuition costs, for multiple age groups; and mostly, revitalizing metal-working as a discipline that is useful, positive, artistic, and tending away from defunct and back toward common. For all of that, The Steel Yard deserves our support in keeping alive The Spark. Get involved and be about it - highest recommendation.
