I popped in here one time to see what it was all about and I was blown away by the amount of cool stuff they have here. Not only do they have amazing artwork and interesting maps. They have antiques such as weapons (along with more modern stuff), guitars, pottery and sculptures. Since then, I have bought three antique firearms from Mr. Rhett and have had no issues whatsoever with them. This guy knows his stuff and I recommend anyone passing through Beaufort, go check this place out!! read more

A cluttered mess of a gallery, with a meager offering of paintings & prints, old Civil War junk & ridiculously priced re-prints of the Rhett family's cliché paintings/watercolors (like no one else has painted a shrimp boat on a nautical map of Beaufort? That's about 1 step up from "Dogs Playing Poker") Far worse are the people there, I have had the misfortune of meeting Nancy AND her son over time, both of whom were phenomenally rude to me and my mother. With at least SIX other galleries on or around the corner from Bay Street AND the Beaufort Art Association four doors away, why anyone still visits this tourist trap is beyond me. read more

Superlative place, for many reasons. In the South, lineage means a lot. This gallery houses three talented Rhett artists: Uncle, Mom, & Son. Original works are available for purchase, as well as various sized prints and giclees. Themes center on the landscapes and wild life of South Carolina. Earlier in the day, I spotted 3 white tail deer in a clearing before they raised their tails and bounded back into the woods. When I saw William Rhett's realistic profile of a running deer, it sparked a great conversation. He showed me how he adapted a wooden cigar box to become a paint palette on one opened side, and a carrier for his brushes on the other. A wetted #7 brush was said to produce a line as sharp as an Exacto knife when painting on an antique, ivory piano key. Certainly in this young artist's hand! Btw, Margaret Mitchell was inspired by the Rhett family when it was time to select a name for her leading character in "Gone with the Wind." Visiting this Gallery was a fine yet brief immersion in local color. read more

The Rhett Gallery is a fabulous depiction of the low country. Upon entering the gallery one is taken back to the civil war era and wrapped up in history. The Rhett family are the most endearing people I have ever known and are so generous with their knowledge and kindness. And Nancy in my opinion is one of the premier watercolorist of the world. No where can one see such beautiful carvings as those of Billy Rhett's. The truly great ones have no need for arrogance. And that is just what the Rhetts are...truly great. read more

Buyer Beware: A friend bought us as a housewarming gift what he thought was an original oil painting, but it turns out he paid $500 for a glorified poster. The artist told our friend 'I painted this" and made a big show of signing the work, when in fact she painted the original at some point then cranked out hundreds of prints made via a digital photography process in order to bilk unsophisticated art buyers because they are applied to canvas. Though the owners did offer us an exchange for what would have been a much smaller original, they would not give a refund. Your money would be better spent on original work by a local artist sold by another gallery because, even if more expensive, a real painting has potential resale value. If I wanted a print, I would have bought a much cheaper fake painting at Target. read more

This is a wonderful place run by wonderful people. We enjoyed our visit to their gallery tremendously. The wood carvings are beyond description and the owners are great down to earth folks. The talent of this family is amazing! read more
