I was looking for a nonreligious community service opportunity that isn't just set up for people completing court-mandated service. and if you are looking for the same, I recommend volunteering at EPFHFB. If your schedule doesn't allow, then check out some of their food drive events, hopefully you can help. Volunteer tasks include cleaning, sorting, and packaging donations so that they may be distributed to those who need it. There's always something to do, and the folks who work here are tremendously appreciative of volunteers. Plus it's good Karma :)

The Food Bank is the distribution center for over 132 partner pantries across the borderland region and collaborative hub for hunger initiatives that assists in SNAP applications and nutrition education. EPFH also distributes healthy and nutritious food to 235 client choice mobile pantries, which provide food to underserved/unserved communities. We currently serve 200,000 food insecure people with 1 in every 3 children and 1 in every 4 adults unsure of where their next meal will come from. Hunger does not discriminate. We serve children, single parent households, veterans, senior citizens, and working class families. In 2019, EPFH proudly distributed 32.5 million pounds of food across El Paso, Hudspeth and Culberson Counties.

My mother used to bring my daughter to Books are Gems when she was very little. They would select…read morea brand new book, and six gently used books to keep for free. Now, in cleaning out my late parent's home, we returned there, boxes of books in hand, and donated them so that they will be available for others to take home and enjoy. There is a huge selection of nonfiction and fiction books available for sale in a separate room. No title costs over $1. This wonderful treasure has been open for many years, and I hope it continues for many more.
