We spent one night at an old friend of mine in Raleigh, NC and got to her parent's Smith Mountain Lake house in Franklin County on Monday night. We drove through Danville on Monday evening. I wanted BBQ or southern, but it was Labor Day & some places were closed on Monday anyway. We drove by Ka Cafe, and they were closed. We didn't want to waste much time looking for another restaurant or drive that far as we were hungry. We saw River District had good reviews and just went with that. It's a huge brick building looked like an old industrial building in the past. I parallel parked behind someone else, but there were also plenty of spots in their parking lot. We were confused as we saw 2 entrances, but we followed another customer in. We asked the friendly host about the 2 entrances, and he said I'll show you. The left entrance we went in was by the standard bar area with a mix of high top tables, booths, & the bar itself. The right side had another bar with bar seating, bowling alley, & games. We chose the standard one as we figured the other side seemed like it could get hectic. I also asked him if they had any specialties like southern foods, and he said it's more of standard burgers, sandwiches, & wings. Although I had my heart set on southern food or BBQ, I settled as we were hungry and didn't want to waste more time. Our server was very nice and efficient. I saw that their specialties were starred on their menu. I asked her recommendations too. Per the stars, her recommendation, & my gut I went with the hot honey chicken sandwich fried and upgraded to sweet potato fries for $2 more. My girlfriend was craving a standard burger & got the standard fries. Wow, excellent hot honey chicken & sweet potato fries. The bun was nicely buttered for extra flavoring. I tried a bite of my g/f fries & she tried my sweet potato. We liked on own more. Likewise, a bite of her burger, which I could tell was good quality, but I liked my hot honey chicken more. And she thought mine was good but liked her burger more. She came around to check on us a few times, getting water refills. My girlfriend & I had a discussion of another restaurant we were just at 2 days earlier relatively close to home in Maryland. She said I bet she asks if we want dessert or need anything else before slapping the bill down, which the MD restaurant did. Server came around to ask if we needed anything else, which we said no. Then, she came back with the bill and went above & beyond asking if we wanted to go cups of water. Perhaps, we could tell we were travelers as we didn't have a southern accent and wanted to provide southern hospitality, which we don't really get back home in MD. Restaurant & restroom was also clean. Overall, this was an excellent choice as both host & server was friendly and great food!

It's the first time they have tried a chefs table offering and for $55 for 8 courses plus this amazing menu, we were in! It was such a nice touch getting to know the chef de cuisine and having her explain each dish and the stories behind them. It gives such a personal view of the flavors and pairings that you wouldn't get otherwise. The food was nothing short of amazing, but that's the norm for this spot we have called a favorite for several years now. The portion sizes were about half of what they would normally be but they were the perfect size when you're getting served eight courses. We also added the wine pairing on and it was 8 2oz pours for just $25 more. This tasting was such a memorable experience and we plan to attend a tasting here seasonally as they offer them.

The first person who answered the phone was very willing to take my order, but put me on hold to verify that my group had a reservation at this location. I knew they were, but she wanted to check. She was supposed to come back and take my order, but instead a gentleman picked up the phone and asked if he could help me. I repeated the story and explained that I wanted to order ahead but eat the pizza there with my group. He informed me that they do not allow call ahead orders for dine in customers. I paused, thinking he might realize how silly that sounded. He didn't. So I simply hung up, called back, and ordered it as takeout. Then when I arrived I picked up my takeout pizza, joined my group on the patio, and ate it there anyway. What made this even stranger is that I have ordered ahead and eaten there before. In fact, our group has done exactly that in the past. Maybe there was a misunderstanding. Maybe there is a policy nobody else knows about. Either way, nobody seemed to know what the actual rule was.
