I've had two sets of braces, multiple palate expanders, and I've needed to wear sets of rubber bands a few times. Needless to say, I'm experienced. The ladies in the office are always kind and friendly and do their best to remember each patient's story. The appointment process is quick and easy, and it's very simple to change appointment times (like when they're made way too early in the morning). Recently, I pretty much ruined my plastic retainers by placing them in hot water. I called a few places in Santa Barbara and they wanted to charge me $580 for new retainers. I called Gilbertson's office to ask what could be done and they gave me a price of $360. The receptionist gave me an appointment for the following day and I had molds taken and orders for new retainers sent within a day's time. Dr. Gilbertson is even mailing the retainers since I no longer live nearby. I'll go out of my way and drive a few extra hours to see Dr. Gilbertson. If you're looking for someone who cares about his patients, he is the orthodontist for you.

With my braces experience, the orthodontists never really listened to the challenges I was having in treatment, especially with headgear and elastics. Doctors Miyamoto and Tamashiro are true medical professionals who care about holistic patient outcomes and listen to what patients need so that they can find the right treatment for a confident smile. Coming in as an adult, they understood and didn't judge my bad history with braces. They used their expertise in their craft to customize an aligner treatment that corrected my bite and straightened my teeth, giving me my smile back. If I'd gone with my dentist, I wouldn't have had such thoughtful care, which may not have fit the 18-month timeline for my wedding or minimized my time in elastics. The practice runs on a mission to give patients smiles that they can be proud of because confidence and joy in life come through our smiles. That might mean different things for different patients and patients at different ages and the team here listens rather than doing one-size-fits-all solutions. They care about doing the right thing for the patient in the least invasive way, not the most treatment. Eventually, my ex-husband was able to get through and secure an appointment, but it was set nearly a month out. Then, just 24 hours before the scheduled visit, Lyons abruptly canceled the appointment via email with no explanation or offer to reschedule. Since then, both of us have repeatedly tried calling the office. I personally left multiple voicemails over several days with absolutely no response. The delays they caused--and the added work of having to get my children reassigned to a new provider--are completely unacceptable. Unless you're prepared for serious frustration and poor communication, avoid this location. If this is how they handle basic customer service, it's a troubling sign of how they manage the rest of their operations.
