In an age of fascism, when the Trump regime has presented itself as a clear and present danger, how refreshing it is to have a bookstore with a clear mission-books which support the cause to rid the world of this terrible administration. This is particularly important during this unprecedented time when voices of dissent are being silenced, to be able to go into a store where no books are banned, where the programming is superlative, where honest and engaged discussions are happening, and where wonderful books line the shelves. My partner and I were visiting NY to see family, and my dad brought us to this revolutionary bookstore. I was really excited to go to a revolutionary book store in Harlem because it has so much radical black history there, and I assumed that this book store would be connected to it. However, the first thing I noticed was how white the book store was. And I wondered if it actually was connected to the black history there. Even still, the people seemed nice and there were a lot of interesting books to look at, so we still took a look around. The first thing we saw when we walked into the store was a large poster of a man named Bob Avakian. The poster kind of looked like it was for a cult, but I figured it wasn't because that would be weird to see in a revolutionary book store. However, it was odd to see so many fliers and printouts of this man everywhere. But I didn't think too much about it until my partner and I checked out and the clerk handed my partner a print out of Bob Avakian saying, "He's the most important political leader of our time!" I tried to hide my disbelief as I looked at the photo of this older white man who I and most people have never heard of, then looked back at the clerk, then looked back at the photo, and then back at the clerk. And in the politest way I could manage asked, "...Really?" "He might be white, but he truly is the most important political leader of our time." The clerk insisted, and continued to explain why this white man who gave off cult vibes was so important. I quickly hit my limit and said, "Sure sounds like it." as I walked away and left my partner to listen. When my partner and I got home, we were curious about Bob, and what made him the most important political leader of our time. So we looked him up. And wow...How could the world go on without extremely important articles such as "BIPOC LEADERSHIP: THERE IS NO SUCH THING" Where Bob talks about how just because you might be black or indigenous doesn't necessarily mean you should be a leader. As a black person, I'm so glad I spent whatever precious time I have reading an article of a white man explaining this. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention his profound article "PRONOUNS AND STARVING CHILDREN" Where he says: "Do you think that any of these children--or their loved ones helplessly watching them die these terrible deaths--cared anything about what pronouns people use to describe themselves?" Wow, I never realized that people who are literally dying of hunger are more concerned about food than their gender identity. What a gem. I can see why he's so important, perhaps even the next Nelson Mandela, Frantz Fanon, or Malcom X. (And just in case people can't tell I'm being sarcastic because they can't hear my tone, I am. Stopped in to buy some used books by Black writers and narrowly escaped cult indoctrination. They kept telling me about their leader and handing me pamphlets to take home and/or disperse. As a shop, very nice: bright, tidy, friendly people that greet you on the way in. It seems that there is a nice community element happening here; there was a discussion group meeting in the back when I went, and I understand there are authors, speakers, poets, musicians, etc. that present on a regular basis. In terms of the content of the shop, I have mixed feelings. I'm a reader of Marx, Kropotkin, Chomsky, so I feel like at least I'm in good company politically speaking, but the shop smacks of people that have already made up their mind and are trying to convince their visitors. I guess what I would say is that I'd like a feel that is a little less preachy and maybe a bit more scholarly; something that encourages independent, provocative thought rather than just letting people steep in what they already believe. There is a clear preference for certain social issues in the shop (not a criticism); I found the sections regarding political thought to be a little lean, and a bit dated, whereas the sections on race, feminism, LGBT, etc. were overflowing with new works and prominent authors in these subjects, so for these types of topics, this is a great place to go. I'll be back on occasion. read more

Love this gem of an independent, non-profit bookstore in Central Harlem. The staff is very welcoming and happy to recommend books. Great selection, including unique finds from African writers, a wide selection of political books, etc. There's some cozy seating in the back, too. One of the few gems left in Manhattan. This is a well curated non chain bookstore dedicated to social change theory and practice. Everything is well organized in sections, the staff actually read the books (unfortunately rare in corporate book shops) and can advise on great reads. read more

Great news guys!!! The Revolution will not be televised, b/c it will begin in a book store with a bunch of interesting radicals that sell books about the evils of Capitalism. No longer do you have to sit quietly in your shed in the woods cutting words out of magazines to send anonymous letters to the government. Come out up from under that mask you, authority hating anarchists! While the people here do believe in gov't, they hate this one just as much (or more) than you and I'm sure you can learn a lot from them. Refer to their website and attend one of their events. There you are sure to find a soapbox with people willing to listen to your gripes. (Be sure to know what you're talking about, they will rip you a new one if they smell BS.) Everyone who works here is a very knowledgeable, helpful and interesting volunteer. These are people who can change or add to the way you see things. Nice quaint curated book selection on controversial topics, particular emphasis on people's rights and "revolutions." I walked in and thoroughly enjoyed reading the backs of almost every book I saw. Definitely added 4-5 books to my "books to read reminder list." You'll find things like Mao's Red Book, conspiracy theory books, Zinn's a People's History, Malcolm X, you get the picture. Too bad that they're struggling and looking for donations to stay in business. I bought a book from them to support. Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, a nice nonfiction on her foray into self-farming suffiency. read more

Quaint little shop which deals as the sign says with "Revolution". Walked thru as a curiosity. Most of the books seemed dated - as in written long ago for the Revolution with never came. It would be more interesting if they had books about the Arab Spring or something more current. The place is OK but people giving it five stars based upon its politics is a bit much. I'll start of by saying I strongly disagree with Communism and the Communist ideas this bookstore promotes. Nevertheless I am giving the place 5 stars. The bookstore is willing to open its doors and space for discussion groups and book readings. Feminists, queer activists, liberals, leftists, and free-thinkers are welcome to have events in this space. The bookstore specializes in communist literature but you can also buy literary classics, bestsellers, and general literature. During the day time they have used bookstalls in front of the store. I found great books there priced from $1-$3. Donating your used books to this bookstore is a great way to lending support to this old, but important Chelsea institution. read more

I really wanted to like this store. They have a great collection of fiction and non-fiction books written by people of color and lots of books about issues that are near and dear to me. But after 15mins in this store, I know I'll never go back. I went in to buy a book for friend and was prompty and patronizingly lectured about "the revolution" and the leader of the revolution the white volunteer who was assisting me supports. She made a great deal of assumptions about my awareness of basic things like the patriarchy and the "real" history of the U.S. and condescendingly proceeded to bash me over the head with why I should think and feel a certain way -without inquiring about my beliefs. I came into this store for a few books and left with a strong taste of privilege and arrogance from the workers. Don't waste your money here. read more

This was a fun diversion. A bookstore with a radical mission, I had fun perusing but the shop is so small, it's hard to make even 30 minutes last here. There are some fun liberal knick knacks for your red friends. I spent part of the time, talking with the clerk/possible owner who was charming. He knew my college and field of study. We chatted about Detroit history. A complete treat. While my politics are far to the right of this store, I appreciate it and its place within the community and look forward to returning. read more

There are very few bookstores like this left. I think there might be one other in NYC. Honesty and open discussion are encouraged and nourished. It is a vital resource especially in troubling times. The volunteers are great, the atmosphere enlightening and enjoyable. Oh...and then there are the books. Revolution Books is a jewel with many facets, an organism with many functions. Eclectic and quirky - one of New York's last and best independent bookstores - RB offers an array of titles and authors that you won't find anywhere else in a welcoming environment overseen by a staff of knowledgeable volunteers. The used book tables in front of the store are popular with browsers, who are drawn inside to find not only mind-challenging titles on the burning issues of today, but surprising offerings of fiction, art books and even poetry. The material reality that shines from the store's carefully curated shelves - revolutionary theory, Black American studies, science and climate change, women's emancipation, regional studies, radical history and one of the most comprehensive collections on the reality of slavery in America to be found anywhere - stands in refreshing contrast to the boutique hotels, galleries, crafts shops and trendy bars that the store rubs shoulders with in this rapidly changing part of Chelsea. For that very reason, the survival of the store is at risk in the face of rising rents in the area. It is time to add this store to the list: I remember they used to be located a little lower than where it is currently. Now we find them right in the middle of Chelsea. They are even cozier with the special kind of publications and zines. Don't forget to check their lovely tote--surely RED-- out as well, especially if you ever aspired to be a revolutionary or Marxist as I am. If only they stay open a bit later but over all, this is another store that I would be more than happy to support. One of many regional bookstores associated with the Revolutionary Communist Party, this New York location carries the works of the RCP's chairman Bob Avakian, as well as other left-leaning books, periodicals (including one of my faves, Social Anarchism), and media. More importantly however, it's also a community center of sorts, hosting an active schedule of events, including film screenings and talks. This is a wonderful store where you can buy books on peoples' movements that are taking place all over the world, histories of how past movements have organized (so we can learn from them how to do it), posters, T-shirts, buttons and more. The staff is warm and friendly and the,prices for all items are very reasonable. Plus, on many evenings excellent talks and films are presented at the bookstore, for a pay-what-you-can-afford donation. A real treasure in New York City. These are cops writing these reviews, or people from the cop blog "Thee Rant" (theerant.yuku.com) where a picture of Revolution Bookstore was posted and people were prompted to flood Yelp. Revolution Books has been receiving threatening phone calls after supporting Michael Brown/Eric Garner protests and displaying politically charged artwork by Dread Scott in their front window. Here's the deal, kids: This bookstore leans to the left. What does that mean? Well, it means that they believe in equal rights, LGBT, women's rights, black lives matter, and pretty much anything that your president doesn't believe in. Okay? "Oh, well I just don't like having stuff crammed down my little throat." Well, too bad. That would be like walking into a religious bookstore and complaining because the employees are trying to sell you bibles and religious literature. I mean, you're an adult. Come on. You're fully capable of NOT going to this store if its contents truly offend you. "Well, they believe in communism and other bad history types stuffs." And obviously, you are one of the millions of people living in this country who has only an 8th-grade education. See, the point of having a college education is that it TEACHES you to think critically. In order to THINK CRITICALLY you have to observe ALL ANGLES of a historical event. Yes, kids, that means you have to learn A LOT about Hitler and all those other bad guys you heard about briefly as you skimmed past the History Channel to get to Cartoon Network or NASCAR. You have to fully immerse yourself in all areas of any given issue you are writing about. Well, geeze, how do I do that? I don't know anything about Hitter? It's "Hitler" and you do that by COMING TO THIS STORE AND GETTING THE BOOK! OKAY. So hold your bricks, hold your tongues, and take this lesson to heart. Educate yourself. I walked by this bookstore several times, always attracted to the interesting selection of books displayed in their window. I finally had the need to pop in and was disappointed to find that they were forced to close at the end of May. I called and the owner of Revolution Books returned my call immediately. (How nice, and how rare!) She informed me that Revolution Books would be relocating to Harlem and will be running and IndieGoGo campaign to fund their move and survival. i had only one first time experience at rev books, a store i had been wanting to visit for sometime but just never got there( i trekk in from jersey) until after an event march which i ended up following some of the activists who asked who wanted to come along. so naturally this was my chance. it was a rainy nite and was cozy to get inside w/ friendly people who showed caring to all. we had discussion of the march results ,input by all and on top of it all, they fed us pizza too. i found this a wonderful first time experience to be among likeminded souls. now nxt time i will ck out the literature. ps its a sad time for history when nypd feels so insecure that they need to attack rev books,destroying window signs being sneaky when everyone was in times sq. then nxt time they threw their outside book table in the gutter. way to go nypd destroying your reputation as usual!! read more
