Then I found Turkey Hill Ice cream Experience only 30min away from Lancaster, and decided to visit. We bought the double scoop experience (comes with ice cream test lab) and obviously that was the highlight of the place! The test lab is about 45min experience and the whole thing with self-guided tour takes about 1hr 30min to 2 hours depending how crowded it is. The visit was fun and of course my 5-year-old daughter had a great time eating tons of ice cream!

Admission prices are reasonable, and who doesnt love unlimited samples of iced tea, and lemonade, icecream on a hot day. Vistors have a choice between one scoop, two scoop, or three scoop attraction. I choose one scoop; hilights of my visit- learning history of Turkey Hill, process of icecream being made, creating a virtual icecream flavor, watching the production , live from interactive camera in one of the exhibits. Be sure to take the few moments, to watch the introduction video. My favorite ice cream sample flavors were Graham Slam & Blueberry Lemon Pound Cake. An attraction must, well visiting Lancaster, PA. My recommendation would be too sell a few more flavors that you offer , with unlimited tastings. My favorite was orange icedtea.

One plus hours to get .3 miles up hill from Baltimore Pike to parking entrance - one police officer until PA State trooper showed up with no where to turn around and high tail it out, basically trapped:( Please organize better & get the word out that you have! Didn't get handicap parking when we needed it. So we had to walk a good distance while pushing a wheel chair to get to the entrance. I didn't know they only accepted cash and not card so once I arrived to the ticket stand the lady sitting at the stand told me they had a ATM machine and where to find it but refused to let me use it, which I couldn't understand. When I asked if I could use it to pay for my ticket she literally laughed at me and told me no I could not use their ATM machine and would not tell me why, she then assisted the person behind me in line. Another lady approached me and ended up having a free voucher ticket and gave it to me. I don't have any plans on ever coming back here for any event that is held.

The latter development period was run by Pierre DuPont, who built homes for his Longwood Gardens staff in the 1930s. If you crave more Longwood history, do make a side trip into this little neighborhood to check out its beautiful landscaping, mature trees and shrubs planted almost a century ago by the Longwood gardeners who lived here. My COVID-era (bubble prices) house hunt brought me to Hamorton Historic District. While I have now been outbid on multiple houses in this crazy market, and still have nothing, I am glad for the new areas I've explored trying to find a place to live. I mention this because I had the privilege of touring one of the really old little duplex homes that are right up on route 1; these are the late 18th C buildings. Behind them, are the much larger stone 1930s homes built by DuPont. This little neighborhood is still in active contemporary use, but is historic nonetheless, and their National Historic Register sign is on route 1, just before you pass it. Note: you will pass it in the blink of an eye if you're not looking. You'll know it by the homes just feet from Balt Pike, directly across from where 52 heads south into DE. At that light turn onto Elmwood Drive and you're there! Park along the street and take a walk to see it! The neighborhood comprises 52 buildings by one account and 75 by another, and abuts Longwood on the western side, and Kendal Retirement Community/Old Kennett Quaker Meeting on the eastern side. It's a little square of street blocks, with vast meadow and forest all around it. Much more info is in their Wikipedia article, just Google it! So glad I considered that house because I met neighbors and learned so much I never would have known!

Marshall Steam Museum - Marshall Steam Museum -- Train Day (first Sunday in May 2023)

Such a special place! How had I never heard of this museum?…read moreIt's magic! As others have said, they are not open every day, festival days are held the first Sunday of every month (June-Nov). It is quick and easy to buy tickets online in advance. You can choose admission to the grounds with house tour, admission with rides, or the full package. This was really helpful because though I'd love to someday see the house, it's much easier to just do rides for young kids. With general admission, you do get to see the museum located behind the house, with antique cars, and Lionel trains. The model trains are set up and running, which the kids love. You also get free popcorn from the antique steam-powered popcorn machine. It was really good! Around the grounds, there is a train theme play structure, a pond with fountain and bridge, picnic tables, and a corn hole game. They also had era-appropriate live music, and an ice cream food truck! The Steamin' Days events are from 12:30pm-4:30pm, and if you choose rides, you get 4 with your ticket. They punch the ticket each ride. There is a ride-on steam train, ride-on diesel train, a steam bus, and two convertible cars from which to choose. You can ride 4 times on the same thing, or any combo you like! My son had a blast on everything, but my favorite was the convertible car. The day was all for my son, and I did not think I'd enjoy myself as much as I did, which is always a happy surprise! I can't wait to go to another! Also as others have mentioned, the volunteers were really knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and engaging. They really put their all into creating a spectacular day for everyone. Every detail was covered, from the crossing guard at the entrance making sure everyone was safe, to the "purse parking" table at the train boarding, to the exciting train conductors' uniforms. This place is immaculate looking, and the experience is 1000% streamlined to care for everyone's needs. It was like a VIP event, but my ticket was only $12, and my son's was $4!!! If you have an ACCESS Delaware pass, you get $2pp admission for up to 4 people. The experience is worth so much more! *One caveat was a woman helping with boarding the train; she randomly, and very unnecessarily and harshly, warned my son to keep his hands inside the car--BEFORE he even sat down--with a threat of ejecting him from the ride, and did not give the same misery to any other passenger. You don't speak that way to a 2yo! But overall, I cannot recommend this place enough! It should be all over the brochures of the Brandywine Valley. Such an exciting, fun, amazing place!
