Very accommodating restaurant in the old city of Bern…read more I arrived at Restaurant Schmiedstube at about 7:45 p.m. on a Thursday evening and was immediately seated. I was able to get a menu with a partial English translation (my German is too limited to order much beyond sausages and cutlets). The restaurant offered a modest but sufficient selection, including several standard Bern dishes. There was also a decent selection of wines. I ordered pan-fried trout topped with apples and served on rosti that was very good. The fish was excellently done, and the rosti was good, if a bit oily. The prices were reasonable--CHF 43.20 for dinner, two glasses of wine, and pear sorbet. There are enough good choices on the menu to make this a great place for a family or group.

Casa d'Italia was very disappointing. From the slow service we received to the dishes that we ate…read more We ordered the 5 dl of the Chianti which turned out to be a little overwhelming and didn't suit our meals (an issue we should have realized). The focaccia bread was the highlight of our meal. It had a light tomato sauce with fresh arugula and cherry tomatoes, finished off with a light drizzle of olive oil. I ordered the seafood risotto which consisted of shrimp, mussels, clams, and calamari. Aside from the presentation, the dish was very off. The mussels and shrimp were the only edible seafood on the plate, and the risotto lacked flavor. My friend got the gnocchi pomodoro which was very basic and also had poor flavor. It tasted like watered down tomato paste with a small pinch of salt. The pizza that other tables ordered looked very good, so I would assume that would be the thing to get if you find yourself here. Based off of the service we received, I would not choose to return.

Very good Ethiopian food. After a week of Swiss and German, you need a break and Ethiopian is a…read moregreat way to do it. I've had this type of food several times, this was very nice, but a little light in the spice department. That's probably because the local Swiss aren't used to much spice -- I spoke with the owner and he said you can "dial it up" if that's what you want. I had the complete sampler platter, which was a huge amount of food served on injera, the spongy, tangy bread made from teff and wheat. My wife and daughter eat gluten free (one of them is also dairy free) and there was no problem finding some very nice food for them as well. Yelp Review 2026 #139:…read more Brezelkonig is in every major city train station in Switzerland. But the one in Bern has got to be the best location I've been to. Catching a super early morning train means having to grab something that will hold me over until I get breakfast at my next destination. This location is open by 5am and they already have all sorts of options. I've been to a Brezelkonig location that's open early but they only have 3 things ready! I like their jalapeño pretzel, and their croissant with chocolate. It's quite filling. The jalapeño pretzel has some sort of bacon/ ham and the jalapeños were pretty spicy .
