Schweitzerhof is located right next to the train station in Engelberg, which makes it a very convenient destination for tourists. Across the street from it there are couple of bars and restaurants, as well as a Mammut sports and rental centre. The rooms are spacious, clean and very nice. The bathroom was also big and quite modern. The staff at the reception was polite and helpful: in the last day they let us use their lobby for many hours (we were a large group, so we were literally taking up all the space in their lobby) and even served us some fruits. Very important to mention is that the food we had at their restaurant was great: not only very tasty, but also attractively arranged on the plate. And they have a separate Cheese room, where they only serve fondue and raclette in a traditional atmosphere. You cannot leave Engelberg without having the traditional fondue pot and that's one of the nicest and well priced places to have it! For the hotel however, be prepared to empty your pockets, as you can easily spend around 200 chf/night. But it's worth pampering / being pampered every once in a while, isn't it? :)

The buffet breakfast at the pavilion was above average, with a nice selection of local meats, cheeses, fresh juices, homemade breads and even sparkling wine. I can't speak to other meals at the hotel since we dined out for other meals and only spent two days there. Our primary complaint was that the room wasn't available for the early checkin, despite pre-requesting same through virtuoso. When we planned our trip we were unaware that we would be visiting during carnal all, and nothing could have prepared us for the craziness! It was like Mardi Gras on speed, with insane costumes and people of all ages singing, dancing, playing music, eating and drinking in the streets. There as even a party on Saturday night in the lobby, lobby bar, and ballroom of the hotel that went until 4 am. What a blast!!

Extremely friendly service. Private parking spaces. Free wifi. Note: traveling with children in strollers might be a challenge due to a (short) steep (with some stairs) access path. A new outside elevator takes care of most of the height difference between street level and the B&B. Tip: when traveling with 4, you can enjoy a private floor with 2 connecting rooms, a shared bathroom and direct outside access.

The view from the windows facing the street where the main entrance is allows for gazing at the beautiful snow capped mountains. I stayed in a room with a bed for one person and the room was very inviting and charming. I slept on a bed that greeted me like a warm hug. The water pressure in the shower was amazing and rejuvenating. Breakfast was available in the morning and served with smiles. The hosts are absolutely lovely and very helpful with any suggestions needed. I would stay here again and would highly recommend this location to anyone. I'm looking forwArd to returning. (No comments on the restaurant adjacent to the hotel because it was not yet open for the season during my stay:)

This charming little house is beautifully decorated, and with personal care. When I entered, I immediately felt peace and comfort, not to mention the amazing view. The rooms were spotless and homey. The breakfast was fresh and traditional, giving me the feeling of a well rounded Swiss experience. Susanna and the rest of the staff worked tirelessly to ensure that we had a memorable stay. It brought me to tears when we had to leave for our next location, because hotel Cathrin has stolen my heart. My friends and I agree that it was the highlight of our whole trip.

Definitely took their time to explain and offer samples, that they closed 30 minutes after the closing time. I ended up purchasing 3 different kinds of cheese here. They must be vacuum-sealed (free of charge) if you want to bring them back into the states. Fresh cheese made within a monastery... can watch cheese being hand-produced into specialities from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM daily. You can also have a cheese-making class!

I had originally planned on doing a tour of the monastery before paying a visit to the cheese shop, however that first step never took place as tours are only offered in German. Ich spreche kein Deutsch. So, once your beyond the big stone wall separating this place from the rest of the town, the cheese shop is located in one of the smaller buildings on the grounds. When you walk in, directly in front of you is the cheese display. A variety of hard and soft cheeses made on site are available. There were a few items available on a small table for sampling. Since I was planning on buying cheese to bring back to the states, I needed it to be vacuum-packed and a hard cheese. Can't imagine trying to get a soft cheese back. While there were a lot of tempting softer cheeses available, I did find a few good sized pieces of their Berg-Kase, which was available on that small table for sampling. I picked up a few of those and was on my way. Prices were fair given the quality of the cheese and it being a tangible reminder of my time in Engelberg,
