Conveniently near the Ærøskøbing ferry landing, it's perfect whether arriving or leaving from Ærø, or visiting from other parts of the island. The extensive menu has multiple types of fish, including herring, halibut, mackerel, eel, trout, and salmon, some shellfish such as shrimp and mussels, and fish cakes (fiskefrikadeller). There doesn't seem to be a bad choice, the seafood is well smoked and delicious, just a matter of preference. Halibut is decadently rich, smooth, almost buttery. The trout is smoked whole and (largely) boneless, the meat flaky. Mackerel with dill is deeply flavorful. North Sea shrimps are interesting smoked, which tempers their natural sweetness. They call themselves a "no-fry" zone so fish and chips, and fish cakes are baked. The fiskefrikadeller are light and tasty. Although none are particularly salty, the smoked foods can be accompanied with bread and butter, a gently tart dill potato salad, or plain Jane lettuce salad. And in typical Danish fashion, virtually any beverage type can be had: draft and bottled beer, wine, aquavit, coffee, or natural apple juice. The obvious choices are an Ærø beer from island brewer Rise Bryggeri, or a local specialty aquavit, Riga. A must visit while in Ærøskøbing. It seems inspired by Hollywood. Local folk art, and antiques combine with an eclectic cinema imagery wallpapered throughout. Café Aroma is cute, honest and consistent. Outdoor seating (with cover), grills, roasts and other events. Staff is pleasant and helpful. This cafe is non-pretentious while trying to differentiate itself from typical tourist traps. A keeper!

While it has 33 rooms- know that the front desk staff may also be serving you your dinner, renting you a bike or even making you a drink as they do everything with a small staff here. The room I had was a double and faced the patio out front. No air conditioning but the windows open to let in the sea breezes and you may be able together a small fan from the front desk if they have any available. The beds are comfortable , Internet is free, and there was even a couch and sitting area along with a desk in the room I had. A delicious breakfast is also included in your rate with eggs and bacon, breads, meats and cheeses, fresh fruit and individual coffee pots you can take to your table. The bathroom while small, had good water pressure but be careful of the step. The tile looks flat but there was a step down to the shower that fooled me every time!! On one of the nights I was there - the owner and her mother cooked a beautiful pork roast dinner for our group of 18 complete with salad, glazed potatoes, and a kind of "fruit soup" for dessert served with heavy cream that was out of this world!. You can rent bikes for the day from the front desk which is a great way to see AEros. Just find the bike out front that you want, look for the number on it and ask for the key at the desk. The cost is about 150 dk per day. I loved that they have a patio out front where you can sit and have drinks, or even take your breakfast outside. And the location is just up from the ferry landing and close to the grocery store and most if the restaurants on the island. And if you want to rent a private cottage for your family- they have a number of those available as well. A great choice is you find yourself on AEros island!!

The restaurant offered a choice between a set meat and vegetarian dish (the dishes differ from day to day), but also served us a small appetizer of foie gras, and then surprised us with a very well-received fruit cake that they had created especially for our party! Many of our guests also enjoyed their selection of beers (which we, unfortunately, can't recall, as we didn't participate). Compared to other Ærø restaurants, the food is very affordable and relatively simple, but quite tasty, and the ambiance is charming and warm. When we arrived, the owners introduced themselves and got to know us a bit, and proceeded to interact with us and explain the various dishes as the evening proceeded. Some of our guests were arriving late to the island, and couldn't let us know in advance if they would show up, but all did in the end, and were accommodated without any trouble. Four in fact arrived to grab the last bits of cake right about as the restaurant was closing, but the owners kept the kitchen open a bit longer and served the late arrivals meals, as well, and let us spend more time together as they ate. If you're coming with a large party, be sure to book well in advance, as our party of 16 already took up more than half the space in the restaurant. We very wholeheartedly recommend the restaurant for any small to medium-sized party (or perhaps larger, if you can book the whole place!).
