The view from my table at Restaurant J. Lovely.
John L.

Staying as I was fifteen minutes walk away on Marinstaden, my host had recommended Restaurant J as a good choice for an evening meal, provided I was capable of negotiating the temporary barriers on the boardwalk between the two while a bridge is being constructed. It was a glorious late afternoon and the sun was blazing down as I walked along the way, accompanied by kayaks and ocean liners making their way along the channel. Soon, the restaurant and other buildings came into view, but the eye is most definitely taken by the beautiful water sculpture that cascades into the sea in a graceful arc right next to Restaurant J. The lovely weather and the amazing architecture would excuse all faults, but in truth Restaurant J did not have that many. I had not booked ahead and the maitre'd was a little diffident at first when I arrived (around 5.30pm), but there were plenty of seats available on this Sunday afternoon and so I was shown to a seat and offered a menu. The initial coolness from the staff dissipated quickly when I ordered the meatballs with lingonberries and the Summer ale to go with it. Before this arrived, I was presented with some very tasty bread rolls, crackers and salted butter, which was a treat for the palate. When the main dish arrived, I was delighted with the taste and the quality of the food. Lingonberries are an unusual choice for me, but these went very well with the main components of the dish and the whole experience was very satisfactory. I was keen to investigate the sculpture in more detail and to head back into the city, so the bill was quickly handled and I was given good advice on the best route for the return journey. An excellent introduction to Swedish cuisine and to the slightly less effusive manner I was to encounter during my stay in Stockholm. The main dish and the single ale cost just under £23, so it's a little pricey, but the location is worth the extra expense.

The type of restaurant where you would go to celebrate birthday, when you need some calm atmosphere out of town, when you want to eat some fish - so, I did all of that: went there on my birthday to have a cosy evening eating fish stew. Nearly the half of the other visitors that day were there according to the same there reasons, which again confirms the that it was the right choice for the evening. The restaurant is mentioned in the Michelin guide, and I am sure it was mentioned on purpose - the food is great and service is outstanding. They do not offer great wine selection, but presented positions were more than good. I would recommend to book a table a bit later in the evening like around 20 as if the restaurant is full, the noise level is very high and it does not facilitate in hearing what your vis-a-vis says. I would come back there again on an sunny summer day for a lunch - the outside area with wooden chairs towards the sea and Djurgården is magnificent. I would come back there for a dinner in the cold winter day - to sit cosily near the fireplace with some good wine.

Swedish cuisine is all about meatball & potato. Highly recommend Restaurang J's version. Enjoy the view of Baltic Sea while eating my delicious meatballs and mash!

Only disappointment was that in a lot of the other dishes (not pictured) the meat was a bit dry including their signature chicken and steak. Grilled lamb 9/10 : My meat was a little dry but still very yummy and well seasoned. The side sauce/butter complimented the meat very well and was delicious. And the potatoes were heavenly with just enough crunch with a buttery softness. And the tomatoes added an acidic bite that cut into the richness quite well. Swedish meatballs: 11/10 the best in Sweden that we tried on our trip! Homemade and super tender with a delicious sauce and lingonberries. Panna Cotta 10/10 : This is my favorite dessert and it was made really well here. The peaches were fresh and the Panna cotta was light and not too sweet. I'm not a big fan of the crumble but it tastes really well especially the sorbet which was just divine. Tip: Might need a recommendation, but walk in for small groups might be doable as well

Large amount of crayfish but also lots of mayo. Fish eggs add a subtle popping texture and salty balance to the otherwise creamy, buttery dish. Dish is fairly small yet satisfying since it's packed with seafood. Novel dish that I would recommend getting. You don't ever see this at brunch places in the states.

The energy is buzzing, chic, and effortlessly Stockholm. I went for a Queen's Negroni to kick things off (a dangerously smooth twist on the classic) and paired it with their pommes frites and aioli, which might honestly ruin all other fries for me. Perfectly crisp, golden, and that aioli? Let's just say I considered asking for a to-go jar. The whole vibe is stylish but still welcoming where you get the sense this is where locals actually hang out, not just a tourist checklist spot. Service was sharp, warm, and kept the night flowing without a hitch. Bottom line: Nybrogatan 38 isn't just a meal, it's a mood. Come for the cocktails, stay for the fries, and leave plotting your return.

We tried the pate, and oysters to start and had a sazarac and an old fashioned. Pate was different from what we expected but it was delicious! Oysters were super fresh and the minionette was grrat. For entrees we had both the veal meatballs and the deer patty. Both dishes were excellent! They have a very good wine list, including a couple of varietals that are exclusive to the restaurant. Liked the Syrah.

The pain au chocolat was also excellent: crisp layers with just the right amount of dark chocolate. Coffee was smooth and rich, and refills on brewed coffee are free. The café has a relaxed vibe, and even though it was busy, the service was quick and friendly. Prices are a bit high, but worth it for the quality. Recommend if you're looking for a great coffee and pastry spot, convenient to city center. Outdoor seating if you're lucky enough to land a spot. Although the passageway where the interior seating is situated seemed awkward it actually worked out well. Service, despite a crowd, was fairly quick, I would rate the coffee an A or 9/10 on the scale of strength, low acidity/smoothness. It is espresso based and made to exact order. There are serval options for milk (whole, oat, 1/2 and 1/2, etc). The major complaint would be that there is no easy place to throw away your rubbish, nor is there a place that is clearly evident to bust your dishes, which is much needed given that this is a super busy place.. The staff is too busy to bus tables regularly, which backs up the availability of seating . This is the major reason for a one star deduction.. TIP: You can buy beans or ground coffee for home brewing.

When it comes to a culinary adventure, it can be difficult to tell whether or not a feeling of…read morefamiliarity is a good sign. At times it suggests that a concept is overdone or unoriginal, and at other times that familiarity strikes us at a more profound level -- as if we've been there before in a past life, or as if there's something there that feels like home. I was lucky to find this feeling at a stunning café nestled into the greenery of Djurgården in southern Stockholm, a beacon of warmth and light amidst the afternoon chill. My traveling companion and I had spent the morning perusing the vast collections at Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde, finding ourselves enchanted by the glorious staterooms and the expertly curated painting exhibitions. It's a known fact that museums always tend to make me hungry, and so after exploring the grounds I was just about ready for something to nibble on. By this point in my Swedish adventure, fika had become the most cherished hour (or several) of the day. From cardamom buns to princess cake, I had become fully absorbed in this tradition and was fully committed to incorporating it into my life back in the States. While the simplest translation is "a coffee break," for my traveling companion and I had had become so much more -- an invitation to unwind, to take refuge from the Swedish cold, and perhaps most importantly, to indulge a little. This stunning spot came at a recommendation of a friend of mine who had studied in Copenhagen for a semester and ended up here on a class trip. Luckily, this friend has impeccable taste. Rooted in (pun intended) community, Rosendals Trädgård is a veritable jack-of-all trades. From producing many of their own ingredients on site to serving treats and hearty fare alike, there is so much that this place gets right. To get to the café you walk past a series of plots alive in the soil, wondering what grows there and who planted it. When you reach the café you find that it's a real greenhouse, steeped in sunlight and awash in a rich sea of blues. It's beautiful on the outside, and even more gorgeous on the inside. Something about the self-serve style setup made me feel like I was at a friend's house for tea, contributing to the delightfully homey feel that had seeped into every corner of the abode. I sampled a couple of cookies from the buffet, and my dining companion did the same. When we took our seats, we found that each bite left us feeling warm and comforted despite the nip of Swedish spring beyond the walls of the greenhouse. It was a simple meal, an afternoon pick-me-up, yet it seemed to fill us up in spirit the same way a four-course meal would have filled our bellies. For a plate full of something that feels like home even if you're thousands of miles away from your own, Rosendals Trädgård is an immaculate refuge. Just like the plants that grow on its grounds, you'll find yourself feeling cherished and tended to. What more can we ask of a meal? Read more reviews at letsgetdinner8.wordpress.com.

The walk is absolutely gorgeous and it makes you feel as if you're stepping into an oasis away from Stockholm. They had some Christmas decorations up and a tree, so it felt very festive, even if most of the trees were bare for winter. I loved the meal setup -- there were some quick bites available to grab, as well as pastries, and there were dishes you could order. I got an Asian slaw sandwich and a saffransbulle (LOVE these). I also opted for one of their flavored hot teas, because it was cold in Stockholm in November! The food was great in the cafe, but even better was the plant shop next door! They had Christmas ornaments for sale, as well as lots of handcrafted items and lots of plants. Definitely worth a visit!
