Klezmer is a musical tradition of Ashkenazi Jews in Central and Eastern Europe, and the Jewish Quarter of Kazimierz is a great place to experience this old-fashioned style of instrumental music. There's usually a Klezmer band playing outside Restauracja Ester (surrounding a menorah!), making this a lovely setting for an atmospheric meal, and the Jewish-inspired dishes completed the picture! The cholent was a simple stew made with beef, potatoes, beans, carrots, and pearl barley; and the lamb kofta came with two juicy kebabs served over pita bread, along with sides of a chopped cucumber, tomato, and bell pepper salad; and ajvar, a sweet and tangy condiment from the Balkans made of bell peppers and eggplant. Both of these dishes were tasty, though not particularly inspired, and the prices were definitely high for the portion sizes--however, the musical experience was definitely the draw of this relaxed, casual restaurant! read more
