I like Towanda around rest stops. So what…read more Kansas has some pretty awful rest areas considering what a clean and sparsely populated state it is. This particular one has all kinds of issues. Firstly most of everything closes down at night so you are left with just a convenience store and a gas station. No food and nowhere to sit and no outlets. Which is one of the reasons I was coming here in the first place. Secondly the cops are patrolling all over here, which I suppose is good because it helps you stay safe, but they seemed especially curious about my presence here, and I felt a little creeped out. On the other hand I'm glad that they are keeping people safe while they are sleeping, and I really do like the layout of these rest areas that are in the middle of the highway. They can be a little treacherous for re-entry because you're entering and leaving the fast lane, but I do think it's a great idea to have the plaza be right in the middle and accessible from both sides.

When there's 40 miles between this rest stop and the next gas station on a major traveled highway, you would think that they would do better in making sure that their pumps are repaired and working because people don't stop here for tourism and they certainly don't stop here because the food is good. They stop here for one reason and one reason only to gas up use the restroom and get back on the road. They should focus more on making sure that the needs of the customers are met then just trying to see how many people they can get to come inside. I am sure it is difficult to keep clean and stocked with the amount of people in and out all day everyday- yet they somehow manage it! The staff are so lovely, so nice, and they handle the crowds and busyness with grace and a smile! We stopped here on the way to and from Texas.

Consequently, it is easy to find yourself low on fuel occasionally. It seems to me that during those moments there was typically a Love's around the corner. This Love's is right outside the town of McPherson . It is not the largest Love's I have been to and it is geared more for big rigs than passenger cars, UT they do have pumps for both. They also have a Hardee's attached to it, so if you want grab a burger, there is that! I just grabbed some snacks and a drink inside the convenience store section. The store was clean and the employees were down home and freidly people. I would not hesitate to stop here on future trips to Kansas.

The real problem is that the gas attached to it is expensive and all the food stuff and information stuff is closed at night. What kind of Turnpike rest stop is it? Certainly not one that is properly using the funds collected from the motorists. And of course because it's on a turnpike all the prices here are jacked up. A little bleach mix with water or shower cleaner in between customers could go a long way from a sanitation and hygiene standpoint. Spray it up there, and use a scrub brush on a mop handle to reach and knock out the mold. It's all tiled, so this shouldn't be too difficult. In my mind, if you're going to over look mold in plain view, I tend to wonder about the other things. Such as floors, towels, etc. this may not be a fault on the employee cleaning, but rather management not providing the materials/chemicals and training to effectively do the job. The parking lot doesn't have a ton of space, but it makes the best use of what it has and with that, it excels.

Over the holidays we had several family Christmas's planned back to back, and decided that the best way to make it all work would be to drive to Salina on Christmas night to stay for one evening. I had some points with Marriott so when I found this location we decided it was a good one to try. I used their app, and for the first time ever did check-in remotely and got a digital key. I was glad we did because we ended up staying pretty late in Manhattan and then were hit with some freezing rain and snow on the way to Salina amounting in us not arriving until around 10 or 11pm. After we got there though, it was seamless, the key worked, check-in was easy with the app, and we found ourselves in a really clean, modern, and comfortable room. I was so grateful, especially given that it was Christmas to have a nice place to check into at the end of a busy and fun day. In the morning it was just as easy to head out the door and onto the rest of our holiday festivities. We have a lot of family in central Kansas so I remarked to my husband that this might be our go-to hotel for next time we need a quick place to stay while in the area. Bottom line - this is a very solid choice in Salina. Clean, comfortable, easy to get in and out.
