About two months ago, knowing that my wife had always wanted an Bearded Dragon, and while we have kept snakes but no other reptiles, after repeatedly visiting the website, we ventured to San Antonio to purchase one. Their available selection of "beardies" was excellent! My wife chose a female citrus and she was wonderful from the beginning. She grew quickly and was responsive to my wife. She "sunburst" whenever she spent time on her 'tree' in the front garden while my wife gardened. Unfortunately, I was recently hospitalized in CCU for nearly two weeks, and my dad-who watched her on the branch didn't understand the time-limit- so she was left outside longer than previously. She evidently wandered off. We' be back to get another as soon as the cardiac rehab folks say I am strong enough!! read more

I'm going to start out by saying very disappointed! I made my purchase from Reptile Pet Direct because of the positive reviews I read. I purchased 2 young uromastyx from this store a couple of weeks ago to watch them go down hill quickly. I sent a message to the store just over a week ago without a response. I'm not a first time Reptile owner. I've been working with reptiles for the past 30 years and uromastyx for the past 4 years. So I knew what I was doing and getting into. Both animals are now lifeless and probably will not survive the weekend. I've had them on a regular diet of greens and have had very little luck getting them to eat. The most disappointing thing is the lack of response. I guess the sale is over so no need to respond. I guess you can't even trust good reviews these days. read more

Get a rack or individual enclosures for the ball pythons they looked dehydrated and had 3 sub adults in the same enclosure without any hides expect a log wanted to check out the reptile stores out here because I was visiting and couldn't stay past ten minutes because I felt bad for the reptiles. read more

This store is amazing. By FAR my favorite pet store in San Antonio! I drive from the far west side of San Antonio to go to this store bi-weekly. The employees have always been great and taken the time to answer all my questions. I bought my Panther Chameleon from them, and he was in amazing health and hasn't had any issues. I've noticed that the feeder crickets I buy here stay alive longer than feeders I've bought from other stores. They also have a much better selection of animals than any other store in the San Antonio area. I honestly do not believe the negative reviews about his store. I think most of them are completely unfair. Google has many more reviews that are much more positive. my one and only complaint is that you cant go inside right now due to covid. read more

Super friendly and helpful on the phone. This is during covid, so they had curbside only. There are 2 women running around car to car getting things out to customers. Worst place Ever! They sold me a broken light fixture for my sulcata tortoise, I went back to return it and the girl told me they couldn't do it because they are a small business and they don't do reruns! What?! Never in my life had I heard of such thing. If she would have disclosed at time of purchase the sale was final I would understand but she didn't, then I asked for at least a store credit and she said they don't do that either. To top it off the tortoise I purchased from them died 3 days after I purchased it. They sell very sick animals and only care to take your money. I will probably not be going back to Reptile pets Direct here in Live Oak Texas,don't get me wrong they have a good selection of reptiles, but because of the incapability of not only their knowledge but also being negligent,they charge me 400$ for a "female" banana ball python on the very first time I walked into their store,which thats what I intentionally walked in there for was a female of any banana morph in ball pythons.The only female they had left was a banana pastel ball python,they charged me 400$ just for the snake and I was well aware that it would be that price because of the morph and cause its a female, I trusted that they knew how to sex a ball python, they told me it was a female when I bought "her'' I even ask them twice if they were sure, and they told me yes, a couple months go down the road,and I was noticing signs that it would be a male based on what google said, I took the snake back to the reptile store and ask them to probe sex it and one of their employees told me it was a male, I told him the whole situation and he told me to write my info down, so he can pass it along to the owner, so while I'm waiting for his call I took it to another reptile store and they told me the same thing. Now the reason I am writing this is not all because they made a mistake, because trust me I get it that things happen. It's the fact that the owner will not call me back after a little over 2 weeks. I have called everyday since they told me its a male and they always say to me, "he just walked out of the building,"knowing that I'm waiting for his call.If I would have know that it was a male I would have never bought it for that price, i would have just bought there male they had for 150$. The mistake they have made has dropped my trust for them so I will not be shopping there again. At this point I think he is refusing to call or talk to me because when I called one of their employees she said to me, "he said for me to talk to you", you meaning me. I just want to let you know that if they ever make a mistake there they don't want to take responsibility for their actions and don't do anything to help you with the situation. read more

Wow, what a difference a month can make. The monitor I purchased from reptile pets direct, died in two weeks. After seeing a vet and force-feeding him (her?)We had a day that seemed to be positive and then it passed. I called the store right away to speak with the owner and ask if there had been issues with other black roughnecks they sold. The owner was not responding due to expecting a child - totally understandable! - but it has now been over a month since I spoke to the manager, who said I would hear "very soon" from the owner with no response. The manager also indicated that the owner was not likely to do offer a replacement or even a discount on a replacement. I also learned that the setup they use for the black roughnecks is apparently a $1300-$1500 habitat. I got pictures of the setup, though it looked simpler than what I actually have at home. I was also told that these monitors were extremely difficult to care for and keep live (all this information provided by the manager over the phone and one email.) So I wonder how these delicate babies can be trucked to a California from Texas, then displayed in a 10 gallon aquarium with a single bulb and a screen lid, would be expected to have a chance? Before purchase, I wanted to see the lizard eat and had to purchase a cricket from a show vendor as I was told they didn't have food for them, and any unsold babies would be fed when they returned (!) This made me feel like I was actually saving this little baby since it would be fed and put into a warm tropical environment right away. In the two weeks of decline, the lizard would only eat crickets. This is not a very nutritious diet, despite whatever additives or sprinkled on them. I also wondered if there were perhaps parasites, which was one of the first things I asked when I called. Obviously, this is very disappointing and sad. It's not just the money, it's the little baby lizard that was actually a gift from my family to me that we were hoping we would have for a decade or two. I see in other reviews people saying that the shop is only in it for the money, and that is probably the sad truth about the owner. The manager seemed to be more concerned, but is apparently powerless to do more than offer condolences. Lastly, I feel it is incumbent upon the seller to be very clear about the high maintenance or the delicacy of an animal they are selling at a reptile show. Nothing else I have heard or read as indicated to me that the black roughneck monitor is such a delicate species, and despite that I have been building a very nice set up for several months in anticipations of getting this lizard. My local shop, as well as our vet have both indicated that there was nothing wrong and what I was doing or my set up that would cause this animal to die within two weeks. It was in a weakened condition or compromised by parasites for poor husbandry prior to my getting it. read more

Our go-to Reptile shop! I have been shopping here since they were located in the building adjacent to where they are, now. The shop is incredibly clean and Reptile tanks are also always very clean. All of the staff are friendly as can be and quite knowledgeable as well! Their habitat / terrarium supplies and tanks / enclosures themselves are the best price you will find in person. They also run sales sometimes so be sure to keep an eye out for that! But again all of their enclosures / supplies are way better priced than that of even your big pet store supply chains. They have an amazing, vast selection of: reptiles, amphibians, arachnids, insects, and even some birds. They also have a great deal of frozen and live feeders, for whatever it is you may be feeding! I buy feeders here weekly and they almost always have what I need. You can also always call ahead just to double check before you drive out! All in all, it's a wonderful place to shop, and even fun to just wander around and gaze at all of the different animals! read more

Around two months ago my boyfriend and I purchased a 2 year old ball python. She is beautiful and very well socialized however, after setting her up in her new enclosure, we started noticing mites in her water bowl. Turns out she was infested with mites and treating it has not been cheap or easy to say the least. This is extremely irresponsible coming from a reptile shop, I wouldn't be surprised if other reptiles are infested as well so be sure to inspect them. (I don't have any other reptiles that could've transferred the mites.) Not the cheapest place for mite infested ball pythons. I would stay away from this store if you're considering getting a reptile. Mites are a nightmare. read more

I had my pets shipped, two ornate uromastyx, both arrived in great health. I had emailed inquiring about their uromastyx and they were quick to respond and sent me photos. I have always been worried when thinking of pets going through shipping, but the animals were both shipped with care and love. A box with ventilation holes, surrounded by Styrofoam and further more insulated with news paper and a heat pad (its cold here) the pet its self was kept in a sealed, ventilated plastic bin with bedding. They both arrived healthy and big bellied! They both started eating instantly and their colors are amazing! So much thanks to all the staff in getting little foot and spike home! So much thanks to all the staff here! I will be recommending all reptile lovers to you, and I know a ton! read more

I went into the store because they had mature male Russian tortoises advertised for $59.99 on line with $39.99 shipping. When I asked the price in the store they told me they were $99.99 in the store and the other on line price was for on line only. It makes no sense to charge a lower price on line and charge for shipping when they make the same if you walk in not to mention there is less stress on the animal. read more

This place would have potential if it weren't for the owner(s). They carry some awesome animals and they have feeders (crickets, hornworms, mice, rats, etc...) that you can not usually find locally. The reason I give them two stars instead of one is because there is a female employee who works there that is dedicated to her job and loves all animals. She is personable, knowledgable, and honest. So, she gets five stars for being an animal lover, working in a pet store because she loves animals and she was lucky enough to get a job where she gets paid to work with what she is passionate about. The reason I give the store it's self two stars; is because aside from the one female employee, the rest of the employees have not been much help. In fact, the man who I suspect is the owner is not someone I enjoy doing business with. I bought four day geckos from his shop (which is also an online store). He gave me two males and two females. What I asked for, and what he charged me for were three females and one male. The female day geckos were a good bit more expensive than the males. The male that we believed to be a female was small still so we did not initially know it was a male. Well, Our large male gecko killed it and we informed him of the incident, he did nothing to reimburse us, not even partially. He did not even seem to care that the gecko died. Anyway, these guys are in it solely for the money and don't seem to care about the well being of the animals they keep and sell. Even at the local reptile expos they have repeatedly had animals for sale that were obviously unhealthy. Stay away if you are looking for a healthy reptile or amphibian to bring into your home. ALso, the owners are rude. One man who worked there was trying to up sell me some expensive equipment that I knew I did not really need because I had previously kept that species. Another owner/ worker made a rude comment at an expo to one of his employees/ co-workers. I don't think they will be in business too long. They do not know how to run a business or keep customers. read more

It is unfortunate that this is pretty much the only place we can get feeders for our beardie outside of Petsmart, which as we all know is ridiculously overpriced for the size of their crickets, as their staff is the rudest staff I have ever had to do business with. I agree with the other customers about not being greeted upon entry. Some staff members are condescending and others just don't care about their jobs. The female employee one customer is referring to must have found a better job because I have yet to see her. There is one male employee I saw for the first time the other day that was pleasant but that it is. What is sad is that they are so rude that even the parrot is a jerk. Also, their prices are a little steep compared to where we are coming from. In Virginia we paid about $8 for 50 large crickets, 3 medium dubia roaches and veggie mix. I ordered a "Red Niger" Uromastyx (Uromastyx geyri) from Big Apple Herp. It arrived the following day package shipping address shows it was from Reptile Pet Direct, 8088 Pat Booker Road, Live Oak Tx 78233. Opened package and removed the lethargic underweight uromastyx. Put it directly in a enclosure that I had waiting are ready (I have owned and kept various uromastyx over the past few years). It had the correct basking spot temps, proper temp gradient, and UV lighting. 24 hours later and the Uro is dead and I am out $184. The temps during the shipping period were below 90 degrees and above 60 degrees so this cannot be blamed on poor weather or shipping problems and full blame lies with the pet store owners. read more

This is the WORST STORE!!!! I recently bought two turtles from another store and I came to this store in a panic because one of them was refusing to eat and I thought with a name like Reptile Pet Direct they would know SOMETHING. I walked in and I was greeted by an associate who I think might have been 13 (I'm rounding up). The other employee who was working didn't seem interested in helping me so I thought I would see what this kid knew. I explained the situation and he asked what I was feeding, I explained I was feeding them Reptomin to which the kid told me was THE WORST thing I could possibly feed them. He then told me I should feed the turtles ONLY night crawlers. Strike one. Then I said I needed a new cover to my tank and I needed a clamp for my basking light and some light bulbs. He walked around the store JUST AS LOST AS ME. THE STORE ISNT THAT BIG!! He then said he didn't know where he could find the items I needed so I should come back Monday when one of the owners might be in. Strike two. I found a bulb that I needed without his help and he took it out of my hand and walked to the register attempting to check me out. He had no clue how to even ring up my order. FINALLY the other staff member walked over and showed him how to do it. Strike three! While I was in the store at least 7 people walked in walked around and tried to ask a couple questions to the other associate and were ignored so they left. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT EVEN BOTHER TO GO TO THIS STORE. The staff is terrible and don't even know where simple items like tank covers and light bulbs are. read more

Most unprofessional staff I've every met at a reptile show. There were 4 people, and of them only one seemed to know anything about what they were selling, and he was too busy talking with the other people behind the booth about how 'crazy' the customers were. After standing there for 5 minutes I finally got somebody to notice me and she couldn't answer questions and didn't seem too inclined to find one for me, while the other 3 just stood around ignoring customers. I think the young staff was just more interested in socializing and eating than helping people. Just a bad experience. read more

Horrible. This guy is clearly in it for the money, not for love of animals. Having never had a chance to buy Rankin's dragons before, I purchased all 3 he had at NARBC. My first clue should have been when he flatly refused to tell me where they came from, alluding only that they came from a "french breeder". One of them looked a little unthrifty, but I figured they were tired from being in those horrible deli cups all weekend.. I was offered a discount, it was the last hour of the show. I get them home, and one of them is walking on his front hands weird (I'm later told by a vet this is a sign of MBD) and the unthrifty one (again as I'm told by a vet) has literally 0 fat stores on her body. These were not conditions that develop overnight. After a little over a week of careful vet-guided care and supplement feedings with reptaboost, the girl died. I contact this sorry excuse for an animal caretaker, to request a refund for this animal that died less than two weeks after I got her. I will paste their verbatim response for you: "We literally gave you that one for free. We told you in advance. As it stands you paid $250 for 3 animals that normally sell for $160-200 each." So apparently I was "told in advance" to expect this one to die (I wasn't) and I should just be happy I was able to purchase poorly cared for animals at less than top dollar. I received no response to my next message (saying that regardless of price I expected him to refund an unhealthy animal) for five days, until I gave a 48 hour warning before considering this his final response. I then am asked "what I want from them"- they'd be happy to take the animals back for a refund and they'll pay for shipping. On what earth would I put these poor creatures BACK in your clearly inadequate care?? I told him a reasonable settlement was a PARTIAL refund for the dead animal and coverage of her medical costs (something I have seen offered by SEVERAL other reptile sellers). I did not receive any further response. Please, please please do not buy from this jerk. Keep digging until you find a reputable source that actually cares about you getting a great pet- not someone that only cares about your money. (For those curious the other two are blessedly still with us, though the smaller boy still walks weird sometimes.) read more

The guy that works there is unnecessarily rude. That set the tone for my experience. But whatever, I can deal with it. Asked him for the care requirements for a savannah monitor (I already know the care requirements but it seems easier to ask them for unassuming knowledge than to request the specific information about how they treat their reptiles and what I'd have to deal with down the line for buying from a petstore). He said 100 degrees is fine. Red flag. I asked him a few more questions about other animals and got a few correct answers but also a few more red flags. In the end, my impulsive nature got the best of me and I walked out with a chameleon and a tortoise. Before anyone assumes that I don't know proper reptile husbandry, let me throw out a disclaimer: I have four chameleons already and two adult tortoises that are doing exceedingly well. I know how to take care of them. But, and you can probably guess what happens next: they both died. The chameleon within two weeks and the tortoise within the month. I don't know what's up with this guy but that's some shady crap. I should have followed my instincts. I knew the animals were not as healthy as they could have been but it was just so convenient to get them there and then. Oh well. Moral of the story: don't shop here because all you're buying is a dead reptile. Oh, and they're grossly overpriced. For inferior animals. You could order online AND pay shipping costs for half the expense that this store charges. BTW, this guy has lots of friends in the reptile community.
