I started my CD collection a couple years ago and Repo has supplied me with so many great finds over the years! When you walk in there are hundreds, if not thousands, of records to choose from. Admittedly, I often don't look at the records, but it seems that their organization is done by genre then alphabetical. And if you are looking for tapes, they are across from the register mounted on the wall of the record section. They have the largest collection of sealed tapes I've ever found! Further back in the store they have their CD section. I knocked off a star since I would LOVE if they gave the same attention to the CDs as they do to the records. They did some rearranging recently of the back section of the store and it was such a downgrade for us CD lovers. Instead of them being separated by genre, they are mostly all thrown together and then in alphabetical order. They are also in a display that makes it hard to easily scan through each one. Before, they had them so it was super easy to scan the display and read all the labels placed at the top of the package. I would LOVE if they brought their old display back. In the back section they also have store merch, used CDs, posters, and some vintage tees. They also used to sell artwork of damages LPs, but I have't seen that in awhile so I'm not sure they do that anymore. read more

Repo Records update, I emailed them and they allowed me to send back the record. Notably admitting they are not at liberty to check every record before placing it on the shelf. However, before giving me a full refund Dan the owner made sure to reprimand me for writing the review in the first place. I had to listen to 2/4 mins of lecture before being awarded my refund. I agree they probably get a lot of inventory in and can't check it all, so do yourself a favor and make them play your purchase in its entirety before leaving the store. Blessings I wanted to believe that this record shop wouldn't sell a $50.00 record that had scratches on it. I live in New York and won't be able to return this or even know if they take returns. They however did know that this record wasn't in great condition at all. I brought it today and took the Amtrak home. Rushed home to play my all time favs vinyl record and am so so so sad that as soon as the record starts to play there is immediate damage. I'm so disappointed and should have def asked them to play the entire vinyl for me in the store, I just didn't have that kind of time. I just hoped they ran by a code of honor. 50 bucks down the drain and I haven't opened the other vinyl I brought from them yet because I'm so dissatisfied, disappointed and super sad. Repo Records is an amazing record store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. My husband and I happened upon Repo Records while exploring downtown and looking for a cheesesteak restaurant we had been recommended after going to the Eastern State Penitentiary museum (unfortunately it was temporarily closed but at least we got to come to this record store). We have a record player back at home Michigan, so my husband bought some records to enjoy. I am glad we ended up in this area if only to find this store. really cool little record store with a surprisingly deep selection. most genres covered, most major artists and a lot of lesser known, prices were all pretty fair especially for being in the city. didn't really interact with any of the staff but it felt welcoming coming in with 90s alt rock playing to greet you at the door. i'd recommend stopping in if you're in the area, i'll definitely be back at some point. read more

Stopped in to look for some classic Motown era soul records. I wasn't sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised that they had a decent sized soul section. They do have a ton of new releases which isn't that exciting when you're digging for classics. I was thrilled to find a reggae classic that I needed for a gift. I was taken aback by the prices, they are definitely pricing above competitors. I found Supremes A Go Go but put it back because it was over $20. Interesting shop. Mostly new releases and re-issues with a few used titles and nice selection of used CD's. The location on South St is cool and the inventory was pretty good ( everything from Sharon Jones to The Stone Roses). The challenge is these records are available anywhere. I was hoping for a cool shop in Philly loaded with interesting finds instead I got the same merchandise that's available on Amazon. The kid running the shop told the customers that they're closing soon about 10 over the 10 minutes I was in there. As I was walking out two guys were coming in and they were told on entry the store was closing. I saw them about 20 minutes later a few blocks away and they each had a bag with multiple LP's.... You never know who's coming to spend $$$! They may not have been cool looking hipsters, but they had a definite interest in buying records.... overall I wouldn't really have a need to come back. Repo records is badass! I found so many amazing albums I wanted, but I had to stop myself from spending every dime I had on me there. I loved the wide range of genres and hidden gems. The store is very cleaned and well organized. I will be visiting frequently. Interesting side-script. We have a Repo Records in Charlotte (my town) and the owner of this Repo records told me a cool (maybe not so cool) story about the name! I love this place! I only get to go once or twice a year but the vibe is great and and the music selection goes pretty deep and is pretty well organized too! I always leave with a healthy stack of vinyl and I hope this place lasts forever. Best for indie and rock but they have some pretty deep cuts in lots of other kinds of music categories too. I've been popping in and out of this store every so often to pick up an album here and there for a few years now. In my most recent experience I stopped by and picked up a Talking Heads album. While playing it at home, it was super obvious that it was skipping at just about every line. I brought it back into the shop to see if I could return it & grab another as I thought I saw some scratches on it. When I explained this to the woman helping me at the front, she immediately didn't believe me & said she would play it on their player. She then asked me if I thought that the "grooves going around the record" were the scratches that I could've seen........(lady, I'm aware how vinyl works) Of course, it didn't skip while 'Burning down the house' was blaring throughout the whole store. Meanwhile, the other employees at the front were snickering at my utter confusion. I said something like, "I guess if it's not skipping it's my player or needle?" To which she responded, "yeah it has to do with the weight of the needle. Try playing it with a dime on top. What kind of player do you have?" When I responded that I have a Crosley she immediately nodded and said that I needed to "get a normal player like this one" (gesturing to where my album was spinning, on a very expensive-looking player). ~Which is not feasible as a broke college student~ She also asked me if I play my records a lot and that if I would've heard it skip by now. Yeah, Crosley's have problems (which I'm well aware of) but the condescending manner in which she said everything made it all the worse and it truly shook me up for the rest of the day. If i were you, there are plenty of other *less expensive* & more helpful record shops in Philly. This place honestly sucks and I would stay away from these pretentious hipster a**holes. (Only put two stars because I heard that they could reply and delete this review if I put 1, but I would put negative stars if I could) read more

Repo was really cool. It's a small store, but they had a lot of really good stuff. Unfortunately (and not to sound pretentious in the slightest), but I'm at the point where most of the stuff I'm really looking for is hard to find. That being said, I did come upon a first press Starting Line record, a Smashing Pumpkins live LP, an old Nirvana t-shirt, and several other decent finds. The prices were similar to the stores here in Richmond, and the staff was super helpful and even helped me look for and locate a couple things (unfortunately, nothing I wanted to buy). I was visiting the area and used Yelp to check out a vinyl store. I didn't know the area, but I know I wanted records.. I rented a bike and took a mile track to see first hand.. pedaling through the streets of south street was visually appealing and added to the scene I walked into. I'm an avid collector but I must say the store is a vibe, busy and a lot of traffic in a good way (music heads and buyers, not just people looking and not buying records which can be annoying when you want to get in the bins to get your dig on) Repo has a small variety of a lot of genres, my interest specifically wasn't there but I was still able to grab one for the bin and my trip back home. Bargain records are in the back of the store. It took me a while to find. They have a fairly large selection of new records and current music, but they are very expensive. As much as I'd like to support a local business, I can't bring myself to spend $25 on a record there that I can get elsewhere for $10. read more

DONT SELL THEM YOUR RECORDS. I brought in a mint Led Zeppelin VI SD7208 to be appraised. They offered me $15 bundled with other LZ original press records. I just sold it on Etsy for almost $200. It hurts my heart that our digital leanings are slowly phasing out the novelty of compact discs and vinyl. Am I the only one who gains a sense of satisfaction when I can peel the sticky label off the plastic without leaving behind adhesive residue (by the way, there's a trick and I know it)? Am I the only one who gets really excited when I hold a new album in my hands? Like, back when Sufjan's Illinois came out, I remember running to Repo, snatching up the album, and racing home to lie in my bed, throw on my headphones, stare at the ceiling, and listen to the record from start to finish. While devouring the artwork, I'd follow the lyrics like science. It's still my favorite album to date. Every time I walk into Repo, I get the same sensation: it's Christmas morning and there are all these magical unopened presents just waiting to find a home. I love browsing through their new and used cds and new and used vinyl. Repo's antediluvian practices (they write down every purchase in a spiral notebook) matches the allure of the old-fashioned way of listening to music: it's quaint, it's nostalgic, it's a thing of the past? I hope the current trend persists where all things old (or old-timey) are cool again (think: The Franklin Fountain, The Franklin Mortgage Co.) and Repo keeps giving my eyes and ears music to live by. read more

Confession: As much as I long to relive my 1980's days as a record store groupie (mom & dad, that's where all my allowance went, really!), I just can't escape the fact that I adore iTunes. So I feel incredibly guilty about the fact that I'm not really doing my part to support the great music stores we have here in Philly. Because I am a huge music nerd as well as a champion of the underdog. And, apparently, old-ish. I stopped in the other night with friends and was really excited to find CD's by all of my favorite bands. They also had a good DVD selection, which is when I decided to put my money where my mouth is (ok, my husband did: he bought me a Father's Day present: Elliott Smith Live at Town Hall. Because I reasoned he wouldn't be a father without me. That makes sense, right?). I love the cramped, old-school feel of this store. The guy behind the desk was the same kind of a-hole that I've always encountered in record stores, so it felt like a little walk down memory lane. It'll never be Trax, he'll never be Annie Potts record-store owning character Iona and I'll never be Molly Ringwald (sigh) but this was the closest "Pretty In Pink" moment I've had in a while. Maybe it's time for me to google my old boyfriend Blaine, just to see what he's up to... ("That's not a name, it's a major appliance"). read more

I remember seeing a commercial for Repo Records back in 1992 on basic cable. It was the first thing to expose me to names like Bad Religion and I definitely thank them for it. To those scratching your head The South Street store is actually Repo #2. It was a big time institution in Bryn Mawr before it finally closed down a few years back. Overall I really like Repo. It has come close to filling the void that hit South Street when Spaceboy closed it's doors, and has really stepped up ever since. and now that Tower crumbled it's doing an even better job. It's a good place to go for keeping track of new releases, but it's even better for going and scrounging up good deals on used music. and they have a pretty damn good Vinyl section. The staff is incredibly honest too, one time I was going to replace a White Stripes album I lost with a new copy. The person at the register walked over to the used area and took the time to pull out a copy at a better price for me. gotta respect any place that does that. read more

I went here on a Monday after coming from a lunch with a friend. I've been told Repo has a ton of vinyls old and new and you can find a lot of hidden gems within the tiny basement they have. This is all very true. The quality of the items, ehh. The basement section is mainly $1 vinyls. I bought two from their selection and they both played well. One of the vinyls wasn't even in it's packaging and it still played fine. Now, for the other seven vinyls I bought from the upstairs area is a complete different story. I paid pretty much full price for the next seven vinyls. All $14 and up. All of them were in sealed packaging making them appear brand new. No scuffs or anything. When I went to check out my total rounded up to almost $100 dollars. When I got home every single vinyl is unusable and unlistenable. I bought The Cure's Disintegration vinyl and I was super stoked about it until I went to play it and every song scratches and jumps. This was the most expensive vinyl I bought and it was complete crap. SO disappointing. Don't bother asking the people that work there questions either they can't be bothered. Definitely sticking to discogs from now on. read more

The #1 thing I love about Repo is how the CDs are laid out. They are well organized and very easy to flip through! Places like AKA and Long in the Tooth are good, but in order of ease of .... flippability its Repo - AKA - Long in the Tooth. Long in the Tooth is just a plain horizontal shelf filled with CDs. At both AKA and Long in the Tooth I have experienced tightly packed rows of CDs. That's why I like Repo. The selection is a lot tighter and therefore easier to find and I love the racks here. Everyone talks about the staff here but I've never talked to them. I'm sure they are as nice and helpful as everyone says they are. Back in college, I went on a tear at Repo. You make my heart pulse tear me up with little anxious bits of fright everytime i open up your exceedingly heavy front door and take three steps forward toward your new used arrivals section. i always hope, as i begin to leaf through all the used that some raging diseased drug addict looking for money for drugs and medicine for the variety of diseases he is rittled with but who would just end up spending his medicine money on drugs because thats who he is, being a drug addict and all, by happenstance had the same musical tastes as myself and just sold back his whole collection and im gonna find something super-fucking-wild that ive been looking for but didnt even know existed and i happened to have the incredibly unrealistic luck of not only having this scumbag sell back all his shit that im into, but also be doubly inclined to be the first person to checkout all of it and have my pick of everything that im gonna spend all my money on. Unfortunately, this has not happened yet. I usually just find a few things in the used section to fill out the catalogs of bands i like and buy a few new cds while im there and maybe have one of the girls recommend something that she likes that i might not know about. Awesome store loaded w sweet vinyl. Both new and used across multiple genres. I was fingering an ole Sufjan Stevens record well priced at $17, but opted for some Atlantic Jazz buying two Modern Jazz Quartet records (hail John Lewis). Great place to shop and highly recommended. read more

I gave my husband a record player as a "wedding gift/welcome to living in the city gift" and I must say it was more of a Homer Simpson gift (the episode where he bought Marge a bowling ball) because I use it more than he does. Not that he doesn't use it, but I'm obsessed. lol. We've shopped around at other locations for records and walked out with 4 records for $45...not here. We got 15 records for $15. Mind you we were in the bargain basement section of the store (the best section ever) and bought a bunch of lesser known artists...Bread anyone? But Repo is helping us expand our collection and have fun doing it. I vaguely remember saying, "What?? Lil' Kim on vinyl! Only $0.50? I need this!" To which my husband rolled his eyes. lol. But we got some motown, BeeGees, Aerosmith...all $1! Vinyl is slowly fading, fight the good fight and keep the scratchiness of records alive and shop at Repo! read more

Repo Records is one of those places that is intimidating to enter at first simply because you're wondering if you're hipster enough to not be laughed at when you walk out with the white bag with the green blob on it. But, no, really, it's nothing like that. I first started going to Repo when our old friend Tower Records fell and was replaced with a Wallgreens Pharmacy Center. WTF? But anyway, Repo seemed like one of those places that could cater to my mixed interest of music, especially my indie and punk side. I had been there a few times before when I was younger but back then it just didn't click for some reason. With the exception of a few titles, they have been able to keep my ear drums rocking and still leave me salivating enough until my next paycheck comes around. The CD prices are pretty standard with maybe a few dollars knocked off when compared with the corporate monopoly that is FYE. Their used selection of CDs conveniently placed in the center of the first floor is also reasonably priced and you'll find a lot of great titles there, not just your old Gloria Estafan albums you were too embarrassed to keep in you house! The basement [and even upstairs] offers a larger selection of vinyl that you won't find many places and their punk selection can't be beat. It's reminiscent of the old days when South Street was filled with Mohawks and pre-teens in Dead Milkmen t-shirts. Only now it's mixed in with newer bands like The Shins and the Ting Tings and even some even the most uber indie enjoyers can't even name. I think what most impresses me with Repo is that they refuse to go digital. Mead notebooks organize their sales and inventory and with the exception of a credit cards machine not much has changed , and I like that. Good music and a knowledgeable staff is all you really need and you'll find them both at Repo. So ditch the billboards on Broad Street and give them a try. read more

South Philly's old standby for alternative/indie vinyl. Good spot for grabbing new release LPs at mostly fair prices. Used section has always been lacking in my opinion. Just a dozen or so crates. They usually have a few rare pieces on the wall but generally not anything that's gonna blow your mind. Worth noting: This sounds ridiculous but this place reeks of incense every time I've ever gone in over the years. No lie. The smells sticks on you well after you leave too. I'd be lying if I didn't say it's been near nauseating at times considering that they also don't have air conditioning. read more

Really one of the greatest small music stores ever (at least, it was the last time I was there a few years ago). The staff is a freaking blast, your chance of finding some obscure record you've been hunting for years is astounding, and at least one of the scribbled-upon posters will make you snicker. And, if I'm remembering correctly, the prices were pretty reasonable, too. Which is a definite plus when you're a broke student / twentysomething / artist / devout follower of good music who'd rather spend your last five bucks on a hard-to-find EP instead of dinner. read more

This is an okay record store. The girl behind the counter was nice. I got a few dollar records and a Stones record. Classics like Exile or Sticky Fingers were around $20 which is a bit high. Beautiful World will have these for $7 at most. Also the used cd's were way overpriced. This place is wheelchair accessible on the top floor. The entrance is ramped and the floor is one level containing $1 budget LP's, new arrivals and the main stock. I didn't go downstairs but was told its all 50 cent records. It's definitely a place to check out but I doubt I'll go back. Beautiful World is still the best. read more

Tiny, cramped, creaky, and full of popular and choice albums. Also, open late as hell on weekends (I bought my cd at 10:45 on a Saturday. Not bad at all). You'll only want to come in if you're seriously looking to buy that one album you've wanted for days. I also get that fuzzy-hippie feeling when I buy a used CD.
