The number one perk of this record store is the huge Latin section. I've found some amazing Tom Ze and Gal Costa LPs here, stuff that most record shops never have. If you're into Bossa Nova, Brazilian rock, etc., you will find something here. The rest of the shop is great, but the Latin section is what makes it stand out read more

Excellent selection here; a perfect blend of used and new music/re-releases. All genres are fully stocked here and I've found standouts in rock, jazz, soul, world, folk, country, and soundtracks (I've only shopped vinyl, but they have CDs and cassettes too). A bit pricey, but definitely comparable to the market. There are also a lot of fun books and DVDs, and some excellent posters covering the place. Totally worth the trip. read more

I thought the shop had a diverse selection of music that were very affordable. When I was there last, I left the shop with Jello Biafra and The Melvins for $3. This place is a mainstay on the Philly music & vinyl scene for good reason. The city's various record shops all tend to have areas they're strong or lacking in, but Long in the Tooth manages to avoid having many weak spots. Sure, it's great on certain forms of indie, punk, etc, but like some of the places that specialize in used golden-era classic rock/soul albums, LitT has a substantial section with bargain-priced used stuff adjacent to the "new" rock one. The jazz section is strong, and while I would love an even wider hip-hop selection, theirs is definitely better than that of any used-focused shops in town and probably a touch better than the other places I've been to that focus on newer editions. If it's light on anything, it's electronic stuff - as far as I can tell, you can maybe hope to find some mixed in with the rap and rock sections, but that's stuff like DJ albums that have rap features or bands that have dipped their feet into electronic styles, like Primal Scream. One recent niche itch I've had that Long in the Tooth has been the only store that scratches is Brazilian tropicalia music from the late '60s/early '70s. I haven't seen a single record from this genre elsewhere in the city, but LitT reliably has at least a handful of re-issue stuff from Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso, & Gilberto Gil. I see on here that there's a bit of a mixed take on the store's vibe/that of its longtime owner, but I don't know what those people are talking about - I used to go in to buy CDs and music books back in the mid-2Ks and now use it for vinyl, and it's pretty much exactly what I would expect or want when I walk into a record shop. read more

Ever since it first opened when I lived 3 blocks away Long In The Tooth has proven to be my one stop shop for albums and DVDs. But of late I've been absolutely enamored by it's super amazing book shelf. I've found everything from Alice in Wonderland to The Necronomicon inside it (But I didn't find Crazy From The Heat yet Aaron.)! And it's always well stacked with Hunter S. Thompson, Charles Bukowski, Douglas Adams, Chuck Palahnniuk, and some of my other favorites. But the steals that you'll find among it's interesting selections make it a book lovers dream (and a secret that I sadly must pay forward for the sake of my friends!). Just today I scored "The Zen of Zombie - Better Living Through The Undead" (I'm serious!) for $6. I also picked up "Street World - Urban Art And Culture From Five Continents" a hardcover super huge hard back full gloss photo book that normally retails for $35 for just $12. And now that this secret is out you better save some for me, or else! read more

Dropped in during a weekend visit to Philadelphia. Great, wide-ranging selection, solid balance of new and used records. Many gems, too, and fairly priced, with excellent and accurate notes on rare items, items with condition issues, etc. I've since played everything I bought and I couldn't be more satisfied. The two people working, one at counter and another in the back, were not only knowledgeable but also genuinely nice. I planned to pick up just a couple of things and walked out the door with a bagful. On the train home I regretted not buying half a dozen other records I had looked at, only moreso after listening to the quality of what I got. I will be back on my next visit to Philly. The selection is nice. A lot of used records, great selection of new records as well. However, I did have a poor customer service experience with the staff that definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. Me and my girlfriend came to the store this past Saturday at around 5 or 6. The store is open until 8 according to their google business page. I was browsing for about 10 minutes, suddenly, the music turned off, and one of the guys working in the store told us they were shutting down early and going to the Phillies game, and that it was too nice to be inside here. Granted, it was a nice day, and I respect the benefit of having your own shop and just doing what you want to do. But me and my girlfriend walked about a mile from the art museum to check out this store, and we were essentially kicked out so that these guys could cut out of work and go to the baseball game. I just thought it was incredibly inconsiderate on their part and they could've handled that situation much better. Saying something as simple as "we have to close early today. Take another 15 minutes to browse if you'd like, let us know if we can help you find something" would have gone a long way. the experience gave me the impression that Long In the Tooth doesn't value their clientele and they do not care about the people who walk in their store to spend money. I'm not from Philadelphia and don't get much opportunity to explore the city. Long In the Tooth definitely moved to the bottom of my list for record stores to visit when I'm back in Philadelphia. read more

1.) The prices are average I'd say, nothing is competitively priced. 2.) It's within walking distance of my apartment. 3.) definitely a great selection of oddball records and books. (Haven't skimmed through their movies yet) 4.) the owner is an old head and is loud about it. I honestly don't care how things were in the 90s, let the 90s die gracefully. The shop would be 4-5 star rating if it wasn't for the owner. And going forward I'll only go in if he isn't present. Which won't be frequently. I have bad social anxiety and admittedly am bit of a recluse most days. (Ironically living in Philly). The day this occurred I was sitting at home and thought to myself 'I should go out and at least be around people. I'll go check out the record store and skim for a little bit.' And when I got to the shop there were a few things that caught my eye. But the owner ruined the whole experience for me when he passive aggressively attacked how I was looking through the stacks of records. I choose to save my money by not picking up anything that caught my attention. Refuse to participate in something as humiliating as handing over money to an ungrateful human being. read more

Although I'm not terribly far from Philly I don't go there often. I was up that way for a concert and wanted to hit up a few record shops I had not been to before. Long In The Tooth was one I had on my list to finally check out. I was able to find street parking right on front. Be mindful that this is a very busy area and parking could be a bit of a pain. Anyway, I walked in and scanned the shop to see how things were organized. Although I didn't really need to use it, an employee suggested to use the crate provided to stand on. I obviously saw it there, read the signs posted, but didn't feel like it was necessary. I also found it uncomfortable. The selection was pretty subpar. Run-of- the- mill kinda stuff with the exception of some nice, but pricey records on the wall. The overall organization wasn't the greatest either. I just wasn't impressed by this shop and really wanted to be. There's no listening station either, which isn't a big deal, but a plus in my book. While checking out I asked about a certain record and one had come in behind the counter. The cover had a pretty bad tear on front. I asked how much and it was more than ones I had seen online over the years in overall better condition. Weak. Coming from a long time record collector I'd say you can pass on this shop. Between the other shops in Philly, Baltimore, Delaware, and DC you'll find plenty of better ones I promise! read more

I wanted a record store browse before seeing a movie at the Roxy, but this was disappointing. I found used vinyl I wanted, but every one of the five albums I checked had large scratches that would have greatly affected sound quality, so that was it for me. Covers for used vinyl were in generally poor shape, like Salvation Army condition. Prices were not that compelling given the condition. Perhaps "Long In the Tooth" is aptly named, but "Knackered and Played Out" would be more accurate based on my experience. The vibe of the store was not very welcoming. They seemed to be doing a good business on a Saturday afternoon, but I found it a waste of time to browse. Far better options here and nearby. read more

Record collection is decent. Although, there's a Douchebag "manager" at the front, you'll see him, blonde tattooed guy with a chip on his shoulder. Don't try to ask him to play any of the records you're buying, it's apparently against "store policy". If you try to understand why, he'll just be rude and say no particular reason ( even though the guy before you might just have played his records) and once you leave the store he'll talk about you behind your back. I've been coming here for over 10 years, always a great experience. I was very surprised to see all the reviews of the owners being rude. Nick and his wife have only ever been very kind to me, answering any and all questions i have and recommending some really great stuff. They even say hi if we run into each other on the street. I have no clue what this "mishandling" of records thing is. Over the years here I've grown from a complete newbie to a pretty knowledgable vinyl owner, so i'm sure I didn't always handle the records 100% perfectly, or in whatever way Nick apparently want's people to rifle through his store, but NOT ONCE have I ever been lectured on how to do things properly. You'd think that at least once in ten years and hundreds of trips I would have been lectured or heard someone else being lectured. I'm not saying that all of these other reviewers are lying, I'm just saying that I'm sure there's more than one side to each of these "bad customer service" stories. All records have always been accurately labeled and priced fair. Same with books and DVDs. As per closing early every once in a while, it's a local family run store. If you want a big 24/7 corporate business clerked by kids that don't even want to be there in the first place, well then you know where to find them. If you're coming in from out of town just to check out the store, and know that you won't get there till around closing, you could call ahead just to confirm store hours. And the price of parking ain't up to them. Maybe take the train, ride a bike, or walk. Highly recommend Long in the Tooth, both for their wide array of vinyl and fun interaction with staff. Had a good time here once - got some great Benin funk and Nigerian jazz; it was a bit pricey but we had a good time. Last time I went we speed walked after dinner to get there before closing and arrived with 10 minutes to spare. They had taken the handle off the door and locked it. The dude saw me and mouthed "we close at 7" and turned away. I'm sure they loathe folks walking in before closing and trying to browse well past time. Pros: They have a wide variety of genres and a sizable 'New Arrivals' section. They also sell memorabilia, books, CDs, and other music related items if you don't feel like digging. It's in Philadelphia. Pricing is a bit on the high end but fair for a place in downtown Philly. Cons: -The wide variety I mentioned is pointless since half the stock is subpar condition. Items range from brand new down to "shouldn't-be-on-the-shelf". Browse carefully. -What should be noted though is unrealistic pricing for beat-up copies of common albums ($30 for a dirt faced copy of Magical Mystery Tour?) -One of the hipster clerks was trying to ridicule another customer while I was there for not 'handling the records appropriately'. Reminded me of why I buy half my records on eBay these days. -Being in downtown Philly, there is pretty much zero parking on the street. You have to drive through a ton of traffic to get here, and most likely would need to park in a lot and pay at least $15 for parking. That means the place should be worth going through all that trouble to get to. You be the judge. read more

Lots of their vinyl looks to be in bad condition. I was visiting from NYC, and I walked over from my hotel to check this store out. I've shopped for vinyl all over the U.S., and I've never been lectured by an employee before about how to handle vinyl, so I was surprised to be treated unkindly here. Pretty much everything you want from a Record Store. Massive selection which will take you hours to get through, lots of rarities that are priced on par with discogs, discount bins and staff who aren't going to bother you. My only minor critique is they lump everything played with a guitar into 'rock', so you have an A-Z of 'rock' that could probably be split up into some more easily identifiable cub categories. The Slayer is next to the Sublime is next to the Siouxie. Takes some real time to dig through it all. Will definitely visit again. read more

I have to agree with the reviewer who said the LPs here are in rough shape. I'm not especially picky about condition - I buy a lot of records at the Salvation Army and Goodwill - but the records I looked at here were pretty dirty, and most had scratches. I didn't find any that I would want to own. Also, other reviewers have mentioned that the staff reprimanded them about record handling. I unfortunately experienced this too. You have to decide if that's something that will bother you. I've been handling (and cleaning) records for 35 years, and I'm sure I'm doing it right. This might be more a case of the fastidiousness of the staff. read more

Just went in as a first time customer, and they were randomly closing half an hour early, though I had walked from Old City to check it out. I begged to browse just a little - they gave me less than five minutes to look before kicking me out, and when I asked them to hold LPs for me to look at when they reopened, the manager tried to pressure me to buy them then and there. From the second I entered, the staff was hostile and treated me as an inconvenience. You know when a place just gives you negative vibes, even though it might have amazing stuff? And the staff gives a bad first impression, like they're angry about something and taking it out on you? That was my experience today. read more

I was pretty stoked to come across this store when I was last in Philly. Cool selection of LP's, 7-inches, books and DVD's. My experience was soured early by one of the employees (manager? owner?). Their 45's are on tiny shelves with tattered sleeves and it's easier to look through them if you pick up a few at at time and flip through them in your hand. It seems this action shocked and appalled this employee, and he felt the need to come over and tell me that I wasn't looking at the records in the correct fashion. Pretty ridiculous. I've been buying records for 30+ years now and I know what I'm doing and always make sure to handle vinyl with care. Anyway, the rest of my time there was spent with the urge to yell over to him, "Am I doing it right now? Am I looking at them correctly this time? Do you have anymore tips or instructions before I go any further?" I ended up leaving empty-handed. The few finds I found were pretty dinged up. Plus, I just wasn't in the mood anymore after being treated like a child in front of my wife and the handful of customers that were there. I was visiting Philadelphia for a concert/see friends. I had some time to kill, so I did a quick search for record stores. Long in the Tooth was the closest one, so I walked over to the store. As soon as I walked in the person at the cashier (found out later was the owner) said hello, told me to let them know if I needed anything. I said thank you. He continued his conversation with the person he was talking with. A few minutes later, they start talking about Lee Fields, (the concert I was in town for) so I interject. We end up talking about Lee for a few minutes. Due to traveling on a basic economy air fare, I only looked through the stores 7" selection. What a great variety, and I found multiple things I'd never seen while digging before. A very successful trip! The LP section looked vast as well, but didn't browse any of it due to time constraints, and not being able to transport it home. I highly recommend this store, and will go there anytime I'm in Philadelphia. The owner was great, full of musical knowledge and fun to chat with. Later that night, after the Lee Fields show was over, the owner spotted me and came over to talk about the show. read more

So I've read several reviews on here where people have complained about being given a hard time for mishandling records,but I've shopped here a bunch, and I've never had that experience, nor have I ever seen it happen. Far from it. Maybe the people complaining have a point, but at the same time, maybe they're inconsiderate, self-important jerkoffs...so it's kind of a toss up.
