In that time, I've trained all over the country and experienced a wide range of schools--but Waza BJJ stands out in every way. The owner, Derek Damano, is the real deal. He earned his black belt in 2006 from world champion Casio Werneck, and it shows in every class he teaches. On top of that, Derek is a Division 1 wrestler and has placed at multiple world-level international BJJ competitions. He's an elite athlete with an unparalleled depth of knowledge in grappling, both gi and no-gi, and one of the most well-rounded instructors you'll ever meet. Waza is home to a strong team of high-level black belts, and every assistant instructor brings their own flavor of excellence. The kids program is flourishing--the coaches are amazing, and the kids absolutely love being there. The environment is welcoming, structured, and fun. Beyond the instruction, the vibe at Waza is something special. Derek himself is probably one of the coolest guys in Jiu-Jitsu--laid-back, calm, funny, and just genuinely great to be around. He sets the tone for the entire academy. The facility is gorgeous--huge mat space, multiple bathrooms and changing areas, a clean waiting area for families, a kids' zone, and even a small cardio corner with machines for a quick workouts. Whether you're brand new to Jiu-Jitsu, looking for an amazing program for your kids, or already a black belt looking to sharpen your game, Waza BJJ is one of the best places you'll ever train. I personally love this place.

Kristi and Adam were both super helpful getting us signed up, without any pressure, just a willingness to help and talk to me about what I was looking for and how they could be that fit for my son. I understand the need to have a heart and a passion for what you do when you choose to be a small business owner, and you can feel it here. Not only is Warrior a small business, but also family ran. They do mat chats with the kids to discuss things like respect, kindness, anti-bullying etc, they host movies on the mat for community building for everyone. All staff genuinely care for these kids and it really feels like a big family! My son loves Coach Jay, but ALL the instructors are so good! Their level of patience with these little guys!? Sheesh! Incredible! We are so happy with our decision and are proud to be a part of the warrior family!

You can tell they genuinely care about helping each student improve while keeping things fun and positive. The studio is large, clean, and well-organized, which made every visit comfortable and professional. The prices are very reasonable for the level of instruction and quality of the program. Highly recommend Warrior Martial Arts to anyone looking for a great place for their kids to train and grow!

He teaches my "cane-fu" class, which is more like practical self-defense for older people (who might happen to have a cane handy.) He and his son and another sensei teach my daughter's kenpo class, where they do learn kata and forms, but they always make sure you know what the moves are a response to. In fact, that's Stan's first question almost every time: "why are you doing this?" Hard to believe this quality of martial arts instruction exists in small-town Galt.

I haven't been to his dojo in downtown Galt, but he used to have classes in his backyard(or garage on rainy days) which was quite the experience. I remember one day, trying to do a form while he distracted our eyes with a water hose...haha. He didn't do that often but he was always trying to find new ways to mix things up for us. I really appreciated how different it was compared to the usual karate place, where you can see yourself doing forms in the mirrored walls, he emphasized body control- knowing where your foot is(without looking) so that you don't screw up the technique for example. I don't know how his classes are currently, but I think he provided great real world tactical self defense back then and have no doubts that he's still a great teacher. I wish I had stuck with it longer than I did.

You also have to purchase the actual uniform (do bok) when starting the classes. There are 5 classes for basic training for ages 7-12 within the week. I wasn't used to how Senior Master Paul teaches. My daughter was more confident within a team setting but I wanted her to have confidence within herself. Within time, I saw how Senior Master Paul and Grandmaster Cedric's techniques helped boost confidence and provided discipline with her. My daughter (and I) both had to get uncomfortable and just trust their teachings. They condition, learn the Korean language and Korean martial arts. If you are looking for an instructor who is passionate, patient and that will give your children tough love, this is where to go. They make sure to hold the children responsible for learning their words and moves. They will definitely push your child to their potential. There have been times where my daughter has been frustrated but who doesn't at a time of growing. After the Groupon ended, I signed her up for a program. Overall, I would definitely recommend buying the Groupon and see if this is for you or your child(ren). My daughter's confidence grew and she always has a great workout. The instructors are amazing!
