My child was around 2.5 when starting his first "school" experience here. He was part time (3 hours in the morning) and attended maybe a total of 5 or 6 school days before they told me they needed to unenroll him. The reasoning was regarding his emotional regulation. I could definitely see that he was having a hard time with emotional regulation - even at home. They also advised me to get him evaluated. I have no issues with getting my son help that he needs, but it did shock me to have such a strong response after barely knowing him and without giving him a chance to acclimate to a new environment. I asked for specific things that happened to understand what he was doing exactly that would result in him being unenrolled and the examples they gave were like "running around" and "struggling with the routine". I thought they were going to tell me he physically hurt someone or himself or that he was destructive to the classroom. I took time to reflect on their comments and spoke to his doctor. He did not have concerns and said that at 2.5 we cannot expect toddlers to have a grasp on their emotional regulation yet. Since this experience, he has now been in different schools where he is thriving. It's not due to smaller class ratios - the school he is in now has the same ratio and he is so happy to go to every day. I'm not sure what was going on at North Shore that made him so distressed. I believe if they gave him the opportunity to adjust he could have done well there too. Unfortunately, I think they only accept specific types of children that can follow very rigid routines. I chose a Montessori school because I thought the philosophy was to follow a child's lead as opposed to rigidity. I definitely acknowledge that my child was having a harder time managing his emotions (especially at that age), but parents of toddlers who are still learning how to regulate emotions and need more fluidity to just be a kid should be aware of this before enrolling. I also want to note that I find it extremely odd that you can't find reviews on this school. Google reviews are turned off, and there are only 2 posts on Facebook.

I'm not known for long reviews here but I could write well not a book, but quite a brochure. EVERYONE at this school is amazing. I've had 4 children go through excellent high performing public schools in high income suburbs but North Shore exceeds them by a substantial margin. Do yourselves and your children the favor of visiting.

We love Waldorf education.  Our experience with the leadership at Tamarack was not good. School leadership is unhealthy and highly incompetent. Their failures have caused harm to community members and students.  There are families who support the leadership dysfunction and despite all of the lofty speak in the school handbook (which is not at all followed) the school allows an inside group of employees and families to gossip and shame people who try to address issues. It's a very cult-like environment where people are ostracized if they do not conform to the leadership's dysfunction.  Be particularly wary of Chet Garrett. He is a teacher who is very shaming towards children. He has a need to feel powerful and our impression is that he works with children to meet that need. He has caused physical and emotional harm to multiple children and families. The school rallies around him and protects him when these things have been brought to the leadership's attention.  Once the school decided our family was no longer included in the fold they treated us and our children with breathtaking cruelty. This school is not at all invested in the head, heart or hands of children. Unless and until Lora Polus and Chet Garrett are removed I could not recommend anyone bring their children to this school. Even if there is new leadership the level of repair the school needs to do with families and the Milwaukee community is significant. It is so unfortunate they have failed so badly because there is such a need for a place like this in the city. We brought many families to Tamarack over the years. It feels important to speak out about what we observed from the inside. If they do right by fixing their issues and offering repair to those they have harmed we will happily share that update. As of now we have only seen them double down in their unhealth.

My 15 month old baby has been attending the nook since Dec 2019 when he was just 4 months old and 4ish months pre-covid... The women that work at the Nook understand babies and development and are so sweet and loving. And furthermore, I firmly believe socializing your child at a young age is one of the best things you can do for their growth- studies have shown it and I've seen it with my own eyes. Kids learn so much from their peers and experienced caregivers. Covid has made me question if exposing my child to more people is safe and it probably isn't by having may baby in daycare. But my husband and I both need to work, and at the Nook, they take every safety precaution very seriously- they sanitize daily, masks on everyone except kids under 2, and if an outbreak happens in a classroom, that room is shut down for 2 weeks to protect the rest of the staff and children. I couldn't ask for a better daycare for my baby especially during these uncertain times. The Nurturing Nook was recommended to me by my neighbor who's 6 year old kid is smart funny inquisitive and kind- so from one mom to another I think this place is legit AF.
