I had contacted 5-6 roofing companies for a bid and then narrowed them down to two. I had then…read moreasked the last two how much more it would cost to install the gutters. Dallas Stars Construction said they had a promotion going on, so they would install them at no additional cost. I had researched them on several sites, had read good reviews, so I felt comfortable hiring them. Their bid of $8K was the most competitive. They had asked for $4K upfront and the remainder after the job was completed. When I wrote them the first check, they decided to cash it at my credit union. My credit union doesn't have any cash on its premises, so they went to another place to cash it. I got a phone call from that place asking me to verify: did I write the check, check number, do I have the funds in my account, how can they verify that, etc. In the end, the roofers deposited the check in their bank account. On the first day, they arrived at the house and started piling up new bundles of shingles on the roof before removing the old ones. They were throwing them down so hard on the roof, a picture in my bedroom moved sideways on the wall. When they took the old shingles off, they approached me and said that my old decking would have to be replaced and it would cost $12K more. They wanted the whole amount upfront. My decking was original boards, not plywood. When they took it all off, 8 trusses were broken and had to be replaced. Throughout the process, they workers had stepped through my ceiling in 3 different places and had made holes in my sheetrock that had to be replaced and fixed up. Insulation flying around the house and extra cleaning that could've been avoided. I had installed radiant barrier in my attic (metallic material that reflects heat). The roofers had detached it in many places and never reattached it properly, even though I had asked them several times and they did attempt to do it. I had to hire the original installer to fix everything up. I had installed a solar fan that roofers reinstalled in the opposite direction. The original installer had to fix it, too. I have 2 whirlie birds on my roof that were reinstalled crookedly. My mother and I had fixed those ourselves after they left. I had 4 solar lights installed and the roofers had mangled them so badly when they reinstalled them, I was shocked. Had the original company come out and replace them. I told Dallas Stars that I'd have to deduct the cost of repairs from their remaining $4K. Dallas Stars had subcontracted the installation of the gutters to another company. When they were finished, the roofers wanted me to pay them from the $4K I was withholding from them. The other repairs hadn't been completed yet, so I refused. After the first rain, I went up on the roof and had noticed water pooled up in several places in the gutters, so they were installed improperly, wrong angle of the gutters. I had been given an "explanation" as to why they were installed that way. They haven't been fixed still. A lot of the work on the roof was done sloppily - the first row of shingles is hanging so far out that they started bending down already and will start breaking off at some point; in several spots they didn't bother to put little pieces of decking in the corners, they just put shingles over the holes; some things weren't even nailed properly, etc. I had to hire another contractor to fix up all those things. Every time I pointed out those things, the owners of Dallas Stars had an "explanation" as to why it was done that way. I have a back porch attached to the house. Dallas Stars hadn't reroofed it because, according to them, it's not part of the house. They offered to give me another bid to replace that if I wished to. Several days after the roofers finished the job, one of the roofers who was working on my house, had showed up on my doorsteps. He said that Dallas Stars owners never paid him because they hadn't been paid by me. I explained to him why I was holding on to $4K of their money and made it clear to him that they had $16K already. He said some lawyer he was working with was going to put a lien on my house. I called the Dallas Star owners, they told me to call the police and threatened him with his immigration status. I still don't know if he got paid or not. Before writing the final check, I had asked the Dallas Stars owners to have the final invoice and some other documentation either emailed to me or have it ready during the check exchange. When they came to my house to pick up the check, they didn't have any of that. After arguing for 10 minutes, they went to their truck and filled it all out. It took them longer to explain to me as to why they didn't have time to do it than actually doing it. What was supposed to be a one-day job, ended up being a 2 week ordeal by the time everything was fixed and repaired. There were several heated and uncomfortable confrontations with the owners of Dallas Stars and it had cost

I have a lot of respect for companies that do this. Cons: only one and not that bad - communication around the beginning and the end of the project was a little difficult. I worked with Jesse and his team to finish a commercial remodeling project that another contractor…read morehad done a good job on, but abandoned the project at about 95% done. I paid Jesse $15k to finish this job, and he was aware of each element of the project including trim work, painting, and fixing the floors that were not glued down properly. We started the project well, and the work done on the crown molding looked good. They touched up some drywall texture and it looked really rough in certain areas, and was much heavier than the existing texture. It seemed the guys didn't really know what they were doing with texture. He did fix it somewhat, although there are still areas where you can visibly see it does not match. Also some of the doors/trim that were painted were done quickly with a very heavy textured brush, and should have been done with a light roller to match the others. But for the most part they fixed things we pointed out and they looked better by the end. Where the issues really came in was at the end. Jesse told us to blue tape everything that needed to be redone and we did. They then came and "fixed" it and removed the tape, however we noticed many of the things we taped looked the same and the tape had just been removed. We did that three or four times and there was still things that they were just removing tape on. I then walked it with him and he said he was going to fix the things I pointed out, including flooring that still needed to be glued back down. He then sent guys over and they didn't do any of the things we discussed. He told me to blue tape it AGAIN, and I said no that they are just removing the tape and not doing the work, but if he sends guys we will show them what to fix. Fast forward a few months, and the last few things we had taped were never fixed, floor tiles are still bubbling up that he was supposed to fix, and he says because he did "extra work" that he is no longer responsible to finish the actual job he contractually agreed to. (The "extra work" he referred to was putting in drywall ceiling instead of drop ceiling in a room addition. We had never discussed or agreed to a drop ceiling so I was going to cancel the job, but he agreed to switch it to keep the job.) I tried to come to an agreement with him and potentially give him more work if he finished the previous job. However he didn't even show up when he said he would to quote me on it, so at this point I'm just going to find a new contractor. I'm disappointed but I only want to work with people who keep their word and honor their contracts. Attached part of contract and screenshots of texts.

Subs were asking if I was paying Kelly, because they were not getting paid. After about three weeks (into a ten day job) I had to ask them to leave with the job half done. (less than half once the new contractor had to redo some of their work) At that point Kelly demanded full payment. I believe Kelly and her partner know very little about renovations. They bid the job, order materials and hope their subcontractors can make it work. He and his crew were scheduled to begin work on Monday, June 2nd, but failed to show without any communication. After waiting all morning, we reached out, and he said he'd come Tuesday. He did arrive then, removed the tile, and found mold--an expected issue in a shower. He said he'd return Wednesday to remediate the mold, but left early and claimed he needed to get supplies. Wednesday morning, he called to inform us his wife had a medical emergency, which we completely understood and sympathized with. He promised to return Thursday--then didn't show or contact us. Again, given the circumstances, we gave him the benefit of the doubt. He came Friday and treated the mold, stating he'd return Saturday to continue. Saturday came and went with no communication. On Sunday, he told us he'd be back Monday, which he was. He installed insulation and backer boards but said he'd return Tuesday to tape the seams. We're unsure why that couldn't have been done the same day, especially since he also didn't have the proper tool to remove the shower handle and instead worked around it. He skipped Tuesday, came Wednesday, and told us he had quick-drying seam tape and sealant so he could finish that and begin tiling. After applying the tape, he said he was going to pick up the tile--but never returned that day. On Thursday, he came back with the right tool and, while removing the shower handle, broke the copper regulator. He claimed it had rusted through, but copper doesn't rust. He said it was the manifold, but another plumber confirmed it wasn't and that the manifold wasn't even near that location. Shane texted us a quote for replacing the piece--including taking down the wall he had just put up. If he had completed tasks in the correct order, there would've been no need for demolition. We agreed to pay for the replacement part but not for removing and reinstalling the wall. After that, he stopped responding entirely. We waited through the weekend with no update and finally reached out again on Monday. He refused to fix the issue or finish the job and is now threatening to place a lien on our home for incomplete and poorly executed work. A second contractor has since reviewed what Shane did and confirmed that the work was sloppy--the backer board, tape, and sealant were improperly installed, and tile would never lay flat on the current surface. Do not hire this contractor. He will try to charge for work not agreed upon, ignore your concerns, and walk away if you don't comply--then still demand full payment.
