For full disclosure, I grew up hearing about how bad unions are from my own dad, but as I grew older and got a bit more educated about unions and labor history, I was also able to see the some good that unions had helped gain for their members. My opinion about unions and AFSCME evolved. When I first got my job at OHSU, I was not pleased with AFSCME for taking $60 out of each paycheck without my permission in support of AFSCME. I was also irritated that I had to cancel a vacation due to a looming strike. Fortunately, we never did strike. On the positive side, the staff at AFSCME were very helpful when I lost my job in the Department of Neurological Surgery (budget cuts) and made sure that I received the same salary as my old job when I transferred over to Case Management/Social Work. While I still do not agree with having the money taken out of my paychecks the way they did, this certainly is balanced by the professionalism and kindness shown to me when I transferred to another job with the help of AFSCME. I'm also glad that I can agree to disagree and still have respect for them and the work they do for many people at OHSU and other places of work.

While I've never had a need to use their services, I choose Rose Haven for my donations of new and barely worn clothing. While on a health journey myself, I have gone down several sizes and have brought bags and bags of practically new clothes - leggings, summer pants and t-shirts, winter coats, sweaters, brand new bras and panties, shoes, sneakers, and hygiene items to this shelter knowing these items will help women get their basic needs met, which is the first step in helping them transform their lives.

McDonald's was a proud volunteer today, helping to package food items. Today, we sorted and repacked pancake mix to go out to various organizations. You also have to label the items with nutritional information as well as a cooking label. What's good is that anyone can volunteer to share your time by working with them. Only requirement is that you're 16 years of age with an adult or 18 years or older. So come by yourself as Devon did or come as a group. It is a great way to give back to the community. They also give tours so you can truly understand the impact hunger has on the community, the state. I truly was blessed by this event.

But Night Strike is only one head of the hydra that is BPM, an organization with so many fingers in so many pies, that even I, as a dozen year veteran volunteer, have trouble keeping track of them all. Beyond their outreach efforts under the bridge, another BPM program is, well..."Beyond the Bridge": an extension of Night Strike's efforts to transition those suffering from homelessness and addiction into housing and treatment programs, as well as networking and coordinating existing city resources to find the best recovery path for individuals with these issues. BPM also engages with underprivileged youth (and their families) via their BTown Kids programs, which operate on summer weekends at various parks scattered throughout the city, and focus on providing individualized attention, fostering relationships, playing games and activities, and addressing immediate needs such as hunger/nutrition in a fun, safe and positive environment. I've volunteered with other non-profits, outreach programs and support communities over the years, and inevitably, with all of them, the underlying sense that there is an agenda or ulterior motive at the heart of each, whether it be religious conversion, profiteering, or something else nefarious, was always present. Not so with Because People Matter. Regardless of your religious affiliation, disability, economic status, criminal history, addiction (current or past), or any other "stigmatizing" factor, Because People Matter has a place for you, as a participant, or a volunteer. Few organizations fall under the umbrella of being truly altruistic, but Because People Matter is one of them; and in a city that rains this much, we need many more umbrellas like this!

They seem intensely stressed and have terrible people skills. I work in healthcare and have restaurant experience, so I understand the hustle but the level of rude is so unnecessary. One of my shifts, I witnessed a staff member aggressively tell a resident to work faster plating food. He had stepped away for a moment to grab some more apple sauce. It was near the end of service and one of the servers told us people were about done so he made the decision to step away. The staff member was so rude and belittling right in front of everyone. Totally power trip. It was really uncomfortable. Another shift, I passed drinks. Stacey was running bevs and she was so aggressive. She kept shoving full pitchers at me and snagging my not-even-empty ones. One time she shoved it so hard while I was pouring a drink that I spilled water on one of the diners eating breakfast. Afterwards they invite you to have a "family meal" but they completely ignore you if you're new. It's a bad vibe. I'm in the process of obtaining my bachelors in nursing and I'm close to graduation. I am interested in community health and psych. I was hoping to volunteer on a weekly basis to gain perspective on this population who are often discriminated, marginalized, and vulnerable. Sadly, I won't be going back.

Costs are reasonable, and if you need help/resources they will try to assist you and connect you with relevant resources. None of that "I can't do that" nonsense other MDs give when you ask them to talk to other doctors and forward information. Day before appointment their pharmacy called to confirm allergies and medications. Day of appointment they wrote scripts for all my medications and helpfully pointed out tests for toxicity that would be advised. They get it done lightning fast and do anything they can to help and accomidate you. Doctors and staff were never rude, aggressive, or condescending. I was always treated with respect, dignity, and courtesy. Bizzarely (or perhaps not considering they are non-profit) everyone was MORE competant and friendly than the for-profit medical industrial complex I've been nagivating that charges through-the-nose for worse service.

I want to start off by saying thank you to Daydrina MA for helping me through the first part of the appointment! I have a lot of anxiety around visiting doctors after some bad experiences medically and she made sure to make me feel like I did not need to apologize and also let me swab my own nose for the covid test(which causes me extreme panic from a past nurse shoving it WAY too deep up my nose, so that was beyond relieving for me as a patient), I cannot thank her enough for that. Carrie Kent D.O. Was my provider and went above & beyond in explaining to me how to properly care for myself as this virus runs its course. I was able to get a doctors note, and am going back in today actually at 9:40AM for another check in because symptoms have worsened. The wait time was not long and the process to get booked was straight forward. Y'all have no idea how relieving it has been to have a good medical experience after being scared to visit a regular doctor for YEARS due to chronic pain from an unnecessarily traumatic surgery done around 5 years ago. Long story long, I appreciate the staff here and am considering keeping Carrie Kent D.O. on as my primary care physician as I have recently been put on Oregon Health Plan and need to start taking care of my body! Thanks again, if anyone is stressed about going in, please don't hesitate getting the help you need, I get more stressed trying to figure out what's wrong with me online so it was nice to have a medical professional give me solid advice and I'm excited to go back in the next half hour to continue care. I will be going back later today to fill my Ibuprofen prescription which is also covered by OHP. Please go get the help you need, don't be scared away from this place by the outside appearance:) the art and graffiti just add to how rad this place is in my opinion. Also Eberheardt was super kind in letting me take a photo of the front desk for this review along with grabbing a few masks and at home covid test to take with me.
