My Productivity is Through the Roof…read more I have worked at home for years, but recently found myself getting more and more easily distracted at a time when I really need to buckle down and build my business. Vida to the rescue. I was attending an event when Melanie Marconi, owner of Vida announced that she had opened a new location in Beaverton. 10 minutes from my house, 3 minutes from my gym, 5 minutes from my kids schools. I had no more excuses not to pull the trigger on coworking, and idea I had been considering for months. The space is warm and welcoming, bright and colorful; unlike many coworking spaces that are more corporate and sterile. A place where I can come and be the REAL me, where I don't have to pretend I have everything figured out. Vida is for real people trying to get shit done, connect with others, build something, and make a difference. They have everything I need from a business perspective and more with Conference Rooms, Copier, Internet, Coffee, Kombucha, Kitchen, Social Events, and even a fridge full of food in case I forget my lunch. Most importantly for me. Away from the distractions of home, I am 300% more productive.

The layout is wide-open and kept very clean. The kitchen has fancy coffee, ample dishware, and space to store food brought from home. For coworking, there are tables and seating areas scattered throughout that are open to anyone, desks that are reserved for monthly members, and conference/private rooms along the perimeter available to reserve. Even though both times I visited were quieter than a normal day (e.g. the day before Thanksgiving), I found the atmosphere to be very welcoming. It was also an easy transition to come in as a guest. I arrived and was able to check in within moments and start working. The dedicated staffer Michelle was friendly as well. She showed me around and was readily available for anything that was needed by me or other coworking space members.

I typically use open areas or grab dedicated desks. There are lots of sitting areas, booths, various rooms more open or quiet, a library area, phone booths and more. Staff is super friendly. Great location with even with outdoor seating, a block or two from groceries, food, coffee and cafes. 21st and 23rd streets are right there as well with tons of shops and food options. Only thing I wish was for a couple drink options on tap or in the fridges complimentary. There is a coffee / cappuccino machine that's paid though I don't personally drink that. Though if you do the prices are very low and reasonable. Overall love the place and it's a regular spot when in town.

Look out for hidden undisclosed charges and a labyrinth of no one to speak to over billing errors…read more I want to like them, but their business practices are so so sketchy I just can't. By the way, If you happen to sign a 6 month contract you may think that is the length of your contract, right? Nope. If you don't formally cancel a full three months in advance your contract auto renews with fees... and you are on the hook to pay that. If they make a mistake with billing you are on the hook to pay it because there is no way to appeal anything --it seems to all be automated from some centralized office and all they give you is a phone number to call and you will be on hold for hours and hours and hours. Never getting to talk woth a human being. By the way, that really nice friendly personable sales person who showed you the office when you signed up? Yeah, you'll never speak to them again --they don't take your calls after that. There seems to be no one person who has any authority to make any changes to errors that they make, misinformation and tricky hidden fees are the norm. It is so frustrating and maddening. I never write bad reviews, but I just hope that someone reading this can avoid all that trouble. When I started running into this terrible service at Spaces I started reading reviews and I saw that this had happened over and over and over to other people. I just wish I had read those reviews in advance.

Parking in front of the building is largely reserved for other tenants, but there are a few spots you might be able to grab. Otherwise, there's a one dollar per hour parking garage next door and a few blocks away. The lobby is beautiful and has a couch and chairs. The kitchen has an automated coffee machine (paid), dishes/wares, and a refrigerator you can use. The offices are a mix between exterior ones with views, and interior ones with stark white walls and no decorations; soul-crushing, if you ask me. My co-working office had three plain table-desks, chairs, and a 2-drawer file cabinet. The nearest power outlet is four feet from the desk, which wasn't convenient. This co-working office can accommodate three workers, but I was the only one in it during my visit. The door locks, but since others share it, you have to take all your stuff with you when you go for lunch or a walk. The Wi-Fi code they assigned me didn't work, so I had to go back to the front desk and get a new one. I got 113/105 Mbps up/down via fiber, which was great. Staff gave me a quick tour of the space on the 10th floor and told me about the features. They also have the 9th and 11th floors. The decor is much nicer and has more of a vibe than a Regus, but isn't as cool as Kiln's. The Internet Wi-Fi was a symmetrical 30/30 Mbps, which is much slower than Kiln's 320, but plenty usable. The extended lobby where the hotdesk folks sit has numerous chairs and tables, the kitchen, morning and afternoon snacks, and loud music, which together don't make for the most hospitable working environment. There are two big windows overlooking Pioneer Courthouse Square, but the shades are drawn. There are just a couple telephone booths, and one quiet booth, on the 10th floor. Hotdesk membership is $400/mo, plus another $100/mo for national access. I greatly prefer Kiln: cheaper, better vibe, many more spaces to hang out, more features, outdoor patio, faster Internet, less noise, free parking, and equally nice staff.
