Lions Den Gorge Nature Preserve - Pup found a hidden easter egg along one of the trails. We left it there for others to find as well

Great hike in lovely Port Washington WI, just north of Milwaukee. Ample free parking. Not to say it…read moredoesn't get crowded, but it wasn't bad when we were there on a weekend. There is a paved trail which isn't too long, but is ADA compliant so that's a plus. We did a three mile loop, checking out the bluffs and taking the stairs down to the secluded little beach. Lots of poison ivy....which is normal to the area, but really it's best to avoid it by staying on trail and covering up. Seemed like leashed and/or well behaved dogs were welcome. Worth checking out.

I'm glad to report that the space was super clean! We picked up some trash but only 4 pounds! (Hidden bottles and some metal scraps that likely made there way in with the waves!) years past at other beaches we've collected 10-40 pounds worth of trash! That being said it is a well cared for space with nice trails to get to the beach the stairs are a bit slippery so be careful and take your time!! It's ok to go slow! It was a little buggy in the woods spaces so maybe come prepared with whatever you wear to repeal the bugs but we also came the day after a good rain- but that's nature for you. It was already really busy by 10am with the parking lot about half full - by time we left and 12pm it was almost completely full and this was on a Friday so it's definitely a popular spot!

We recently camped here for 5 nights in our small RV. It's a lovely place on an enchanting, wooded…read morelake. We saw frogs, fireflies, and even a small otter splashing around in front of our campsite! Almost every night, we took a quick 12-minute walk over to the delicious and beautiful Waller's Supper Club for dinner and old fashioneds, where we enjoyed the complimentary pontoon rides around the adjacent lake. We selected a deluxe campsite right on the water, and family members booked the spot next to ours. We have two pugs, and our family has one small dog. The reviews had us a bit nervous that our dogs would bark and we would get in trouble, because all dogs occasionally bark. We need not have worried. The park is quiet in a pleasant way, not in an oppressive or excessively supervised way at all. We have to assume that people writing negative reviews about this had large, very loud dogs. In the evenings after dinner, we quietly enjoyed cocktails and soft music under the stars around the campfire without any issues, and saw others throughout the park doing the same. Again, we have to assume that those complaining about being told to quiet down must have been really tearing it up lol! The negative reviews we read prior to arrival made us needlessly apprehensive, and didn't reflect our experience with this wonderful campground at all. We absolutely loved it, and will definitely stay again if we are in the area.

At this rate, my family should be spokespeople for this State Park, because we really love it that…read moremuch. It continues to be a favorite spot for camping trips multiple times a year, but hot dang you have to book FAR in advance to get a site! I believe they allow you to book up to 11 months in advance, which seems crazy but trust me when I say you need to, especially for weekend or holiday dates. We camp with both an RV and tents, and are always in search of sites with electric as an option. My favorite is around the #89-92 area, but honestly you can't go wrong with most all of the sites. The grounds are extremely well-kept, and it's a delight to be tucked into the forest of trees. Tons of walking paths wind around this park too, including the beautiful dunes. Great to explore in all seasons. Various trails lead straight to Lake Michigan, where you'll find the sprawling beach of white sand. In the warm months, it's great to swim, and in the cooler months the beach is flat enough to take a nice long walk on or simply enjoy the ocean-like views. Other pros: plenty of parking for single-day visitors, a huge playground alongside the beach entrance, firewood and ice on site, an 'amphitheatre' area where events like weddings can be hosted, and it's very dog-friendly. There's nothing not to love at this gorgeous state park!
