Refuge du Goûter

Protip: you can get a hearty discount if you are the member of a mountaineering club, and can prove it) They fly food in via helicopter, and this is included in the price. (we had Salmon) They fly out people with altitude sickness. They sell alcohol! (best beer I ever had was my "arrival beer" here, so crisp, so refreshing!) They can accommodate up to 100 people. The furnishings are the perfect mix of functional, stylish, and minimalist. The beds are comfy! It's nicer than any place I've ever lived in, in the front country! It makes climbing Mt Blanc feel more "cushy vacation" than "miserable slog/sufferfest".

Another fabulous alpine hut in the French alps…read more This is one of the more rickety huts in France, compared to the newer ones (Gouter), but compared to most mountain huts in the US, this one is large and super-deluxe! Valor Hut
What Americans call "huts", the French call a "refuge". I think it's a much better term. It's a…read moreplace to hunker down in a very unsafe environment...not a make-shift, crappy shelter. Thus, the French name is "Refuge Vallot". Located at 4,362 meters on Mont Blac (on the Goûter route), this is not a place you "plan" on staying at. If you end up here, something probably went wrong: someone is hurt, horrible weather rolled in, you got lost, etc. It'll cut the wind on a desperate night, but not much else. Now that I think about it, the better term for this "refuge" might actually be "hut". When you see it on the way up, it's best to keep sloggin' for the summit.

Dinner and breakfast had good options and tasty. Dinner had a good spread of options including meat, cheese, salad, salmon one night, 2 desserts; our other night stay had a la carte dinner which was my favorite of the two and had much better desserts. Breakfast had multiple types of yogurt including packaged flavored, chèvre, natural; granola and plain cornflakes, fruit, dried fruit, salad, charcuterie, baguette, butter croissants, sliced bread, multiple jams, hard boiled eggs. Location is within short walking distance to a bus stop, grocery store and some shops. Wifi was good, but did have poor coverage in the dining area. I would stay here again.

The hotel has such a fun vibe. It's just buzzing with energy. Rooms are tiny but clean and well appointed (there's a wall mounted towel warmer so you can hand wash and dry some of your clothes here). The breakfast spread was wonderful. There was fruit, sausage, mushrooms, eggs, chia seed pudding, pastries, juices etc. I had dinner one night here and got a burger and it was fresh and filling. I would stay at RockyPop again, and would recommend to family and friends (esp those coming in larger groups) who don't mind a short trek into Chamonix.

Our room was clean and had a good amount of Space. The hotel is about 15/20 minute bus ride into Chamonix but the prices are far cheaper than anything in the city directly. The only thing is they DO NOT do bag check if you arrive early. We were lucky enough to check in early however you can't store bags here. Would stay again. I really enjoyed my visit overall.
