Protip: you can get a hearty discount if you are the member of a mountaineering club, and can prove it) They fly food in via helicopter, and this is included in the price. (we had Salmon) They fly out people with altitude sickness. They sell alcohol! (best beer I ever had was my "arrival beer" here, so crisp, so refreshing!) They can accommodate up to 100 people. The furnishings are the perfect mix of functional, stylish, and minimalist. The beds are comfy! It's nicer than any place I've ever lived in, in the front country! It makes climbing Mt Blanc feel more "cushy vacation" than "miserable slog/sufferfest".

I must say, I like camping a lot better than staying at Rifugios. We arrived pretty early in the day. I was feeling pretty sick and it may have been food poisoning. A thunderstorm was fast approaching. We went in and told the staff we had a reservation for the night. We were told no check in until 3:30 and sent out to face the storm. Since it was early and the next day was long we thought about trying to go to the next Rifugio. Our guidebook author had said it was common for Rifugio staff to phone the next one and help with reservations. Our phones didn't work. We explained our situation to the staff and they just shrugged. We spent the night only, didn't have the dinner and breakfast. The room was very cramped, hot and stuffy and smelled like dirty socks and farts. Someone was snoring very loudly, so I didn't get sleep before getting up at 4 am for a very long hike the next day.

Thankfully, it didn't get busy until 1300, and the staff quickly sat us and gave us until 1300 to vacate the table. That was plenty of time for us to enjoy a fantastic pasta lunch and a few glasses of the local white. Hands-down the best meal I've ever had on a mountain anywhere, ever. The refuge is off-piste to…read moreskier's right of La Herse or the Grand Montets cablecar. In addition to the off-piste route, you can take moderate cat-tracks to it from the piste, but there is no getting back on piste without either hiking out, taking a steep red back down to the Lognan trail to the base, or taking more off-piste back to the Lognan trail. The refuge is tiny, so you really need to call to make reservations beforehand (day before or morning of) in order to make sure you have a table. This is a beautiful old school refuge, with cozy stone walls, exposed wood beams, and old wood tables. I can't imagine a more Alps feel being possible. The menu seems to change daily, and on the day we were there they had something like oven-baked French bread pizza in cast iron skillets, but that's not doing it justice at all. The bread was cut and layered into the bottom of the pans, slices of fantastic cheese placed on top, then topped with a variety of options (e.g., tomatoes, asparagus, etc.) and baked until the cheese was bubbling. To wrap up the meal, they have a decent selection of tarts, tortes, and other sweets. My rhubarb tart was amazing, with a perfect crust and enough rhubarb for flavor in the tart without being too bitter, and my friend's blueberry tart disappeared damn near instantly, so I assume that it was also good. Great food, great views, and a great vibe; what more could you want from a ski hut in the Alps?

Another fabulous alpine hut in the French alps…read more This is one of the more rickety huts in France, compared to the newer ones (Gouter), but compared to most mountain huts in the US, this one is large and super-deluxe! Soup? Sandwiches? Beer? Yep. A good "bad weather day" idea is to just hike out to this hut, have lunch, and hike back.

The ascent takes you through rocks and chains help you up in places - virtually mountaineering although I managed it in plimsolls and there is a cafe for refreshments half way up before it gets tough. My heart was pounding after this extreme walk and I was relieved to see La Cabane de Susanfe's flag in the distance. Even though we did this walk in June, it was fairly cold at this height and one can see snow on the same level. We had a delicious dinner of soup and curry with an apple puree dessert and except for the latter were given 2 servings of each. One can purchase drinks. There is an Aga in the dining room and the warmth was so welcoming. A few chairs are outside for smoking and a dog prowls the estate. Upstairs one sleeps in a dormitory which gives one a bit of pressure to sleep and not make any noise and with my heart pounding I nodded off eventually. Heavy rain fell on the roof -Simon and I were so lucky to have missed that on our way up. A real alpine experience. I thought the breakfast could have been better as it just consisted of some bread, jam and coffee before we walked back down. Well done to the owners for living in such a difficult to reach, isolated location to provide this experience for people.
