I am so tremendously impressed with my recent experience with Reel Class Charters, I am not quite sure where to start, so I will simply list different components of their business (that are visible to the customer) and go from there.
The Staff: Our group of eight had two skippers, one for each boat. Personally, my skipper on all days of our excursion was Ben. In terms of his ability as a boatman, a fisherman, a navigator, instructor or even a chef, he's pretty much uneclipsed. He took us to some amazing spots (we caught our daily max of King Salmon in 15 minutes the first day, no joke), and explain why Salmon (or whatever fish we were after) would congregate where we were, how bait types and lures affected the fishing, and every little detail about the fish. Personally, I am not that interested in the ecology of fish, but was nonetheless very interested in all aspects; Ben made the experience of catching fish and the whys and hows very palatable for your average person. I felt I learned not only a lot about fishing, but about Alaska, and other aspects of fishing (correctly) on a fishing boat.
Hardware: The boats were clean, perfectly maintained, and there were more-than-enough rods/reels/etc. on the boat, even if all occupants wanted to engage in the same activity. There was food and drink plentifully available.
The experience: There isn't a wasted moment, but you never, ever feel rushed. You get on the dock at 0530, and you're out on the water at 0531.
Honestly, I could write pages about this place, but if you're looking for a place that will set everything up for you (including the best rates at the best hotel in Sitka), the type that only wants to do two things: Fish and sign the check, or even an experienced angler looking to learn new things, then look no further! read more
