That is, if you can get a ticket! From when I used to live near the area, it was always sold out. So, big seats for the basic seats, then even bigger and four sofas which still work out comparatively to regular cinema seats. But the food and drink are rather more upmarket ...... a china mug of coffee, or a glass of wine and some cake or nice ice-cream but all affordable unlike a regular cinema. This is truly an outing and worth it. And then there are the bathrooms - black and white tiles, with individual fresh cotton hand towels and ladies necessaries free of charge on the window sill. And nice hand cream. It is worth it just for the toilets! Staff are lovely and helpful.

Most are now sad and hollowed out relics, home to carpet warehouses and luxury flats, so the Regal is a cherishable oddity - and a lovely reminder of a largely lost era. Does it have the biggest screen? The loudest sound system? The biggest buckets of pop corn? Nein. However, does it have architectural merit, charm and - above all - atmosphere. Now, admittedly, this atmosphere is generated in part by the kind of seating arrangement that predates the obesity crisis - and you might struggle for elbow room if you are bigger than, say, Danny Devito, but this kind of cheek-by-jowel feel is the perfect way to see a big summer Event Movie. We took in the last Harry Potter film here and the combination of steeply angled seating, old style uplighting and physical closeness to our fellow viewers helped to create a genuine sense of sharing the experience with other people. As mentioned, this comes at a cost: if you're a tubster, or suffer from deep-vein thrombosis, or if you are one of the people we seem to have bred of late who don't like being in proximity to other people, then you'd probably be better off seeking a dreary, out-of-town multiplex. Patient has assistance dog and I'd called to confirm this was appropriate. Staff member advised this was fine. Arrived and all staff were supportive and considerate and treated my patient respectfully and was extremely helpful throughout the visit. This enabled my patient do to something normal. The theaters are all pretty small - but comfortable, high quality projection and great sound. Ideally located next door to a Costa for your coffee and a Prezzo if you want to eat before or after. You can reserve your exact seat. The staff are really nice and friendly. For me as a Brit just returning to the good old Mother country I am amazed by the "unlimited" deal - 18 pounds - well 17.99 for unlimited movies for a month - what a deal!!!!!

Phoenix Arts is a small cinema, there is one screen and thus only one showing at a time. The listings vary from the newest independent releases, to regular showings of classics and cult favourites from cinema history. They sometimes also do theme days or weeks, for example around Halloween, they have regular showings of classic horror films. Ticket costs are about the same as larger, more mainstream cinemas, though they sometimes do various offers for advanced bookings. There is a very relaxed atmosphere at Phoenix Arts - no rushing, no people ruining films with chit-chat. They also operate a bar, so you can take in alcoholic drinks with you to watch the movie if you so choose. From time to time, they host lectures on certain aspects of film and multimedia presentations by local university students. There is also weekly comedy and music nights in the lounge area.

If you like cinema that isn't all hollywood blockbusters with predictable stories then this is the cinema for you in Derby, especially given the reasonable price of the tickets. They have cine kids screenings, afternoon matinees which are reduced price tickets and they do their own version of Orange Wednesdays 2-4-1 tickets but this is exclusive to EVERYONE on all screenings after 5pm. Good stuff! BFI mediatheque: The only facility of it's kind outside of London. You have access to a huge archive of film from the British Film Institute and it's completely free. Book yourself in and log on. Brilliant addition which I personally would like to make time to use more often. Gallery: It's a gallery. The exhibitions change and some people like the work and others don't. That's art for you. The Coors Cafe: Ok, This should be brilliant. It's reasonably priced, they do Bass beer on draught and they sometimes have live performances. Sounds good. Well, yes, sort of. Since it opened I have repeatedly visited the cafe and on several visits I have had really bad service, from getting my food orders wrong and being charged incorrectly, to finding chunks (this isn't an exaggeration) of plastic in my food. I really want to like the Coors Cafe but each time I visit it seems like something else goes wrong. I thoroughly recommend visiting Quad though. It's a great place to spend a few hours when you have nothing to do- just be prepared for less that perfect service in the cafe.

If you are interested in learning about digital media and how to make the most of Adobe software, QUAD also runs various courses, which appear to be good value. They have a suite of up-to-date Apple Macs with all the bells and whistles. Free wi-fi access is available in the cafe, but you will need to ask for the access code from the reception desk. Besides your usual popcorn and sweets, they also have a Baskin Robbins where you can get ice cream and sundaes. There are some tables in the lobby area if you are a bit early... although it is next to a number of restaurants if you do want a bite to eat before or after your film. During peak times it can be difficult to get in and out of the leisure park and sometimes difficult to find parking. However, it is convenient and saves us from having to drive further to find a cinema.

They get all the big movies fresh - often beating the bigger Odeon theaters (like the one closer to us than Red Carpet. On a nice sunny day - arrive early and stroll around enjoying the beauty, a little shopping perhaps? There is also a ice cream shop and two decent restaurants Talking of restaurants the Red Carpet has its own restaurant - I have posted a typical menu - there you can reserve a table for dinner before the show. They show a mixture of current, classic and independent films plus some musical theatre, opera and ballet. Really comfortable seats with plenty of leg room. Pricing is very reasonable with a pre noon price of £4.50 per adult. Only criticism of the cinema itself is the volume of the films could be slightly louder but maybe that's because the last film I saw was The Jungle Book and there was 2 unruly children in the next row! Cafe bar is nice, service is quite slow though and food average, I have only eaten here once but wouldn't rush back. I tend to order a glass of wine and take it into the cinema with me! Bliss!
