We visited the Avon Lake bald eagle family today! The mom is named Stars and dad is named Stripes; they welcomed three eaglets recently.
Stars and Stripes, have long nested in a tree outside of Redwood Elementary School. Students at the school created a livestream using multiple cameras so bird enthusiasts could watch the eagles day or night. We could easily see the parents from where we were standing, but could only see the kids on the web cams. While we were there, the mom left and flew back with a fish. When she came back, we watched her bring the fish into the nest!
Did you know The bald eagle builds the largest nest of any North American bird? Or that its beak, feet and irises are bright yellow. Yellow irises!
Their call consists of weak staccato, chirping whistles, kleek kik ik ik ik, somewhat similar in cadence to a gull's call.
Did you know a federal law prohibits non-Native Americans from possessing bald eagle parts, including feathers? The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, amended several times since its passage in 1940, prohibits anyone without a federal permit from disturbing, taking or possessing eagle feathers.
