Almost a year ago, a few months prior to giving birth to my son, I was in desperate need of relief from lower back pain. It was debilitating. We found Dr. Carlson through the Kaiser database of approved providers and my husband made us both an appointment about two months out since he was booked solid. My husband is a veteran with back pain as well and has been trying to convince me for years to see a chiropractor. Since I was in need of immediate relief we made a few appointments with another local chiropractor (who shall not be named) who was able to get us in right away (reflecting on this now, I believe his open availability was likely a sign of the lack of care to come). I didn't know any better at the time as this was my first experience so I excitedly attended my first appointment hoping for the best. I got to my appointment and there was no intake process really. I was told I couldn't do X-rays due to my pregnancy and to just tell him what hurt. Each of the times I went, my appointment lasted about 10 minutes and the same ineffective adjustment was done each time. I was left with no change to my quality of life. THEN..my appointment with Dr. Carlson came. I was praying things would be different with a new provider and boy was it. My initial appointment took slightly over an hour. Another gentleman, Dennis, evaluated me from head to toe. This evaluation itself took longer than all my appointments combined at the other place. Great! I could tell I was in good hands. I really appreciated the level of care and attention to detail with my concerns. Dr. Carlson did my adjustment after my evaluation and made it a point to get me on his busy schedule since I was pregnant and really needed his help. What a God send. I remember walking to my car after my appointment actually walking upright with no pain instead of my typical strained pregnant lady waddle. I felt relief for the first time in months and I actually cried tears of joy. I called my husband immediately and told him not to waste any more of our Kaiser approved chiro visits on the other place and told him he wouldn't regret waiting for his appointment with Dr. Carlson. I was already overwhelmed and emotional during the appointment, and that comment was extremely upsetting and inappropriate to me. Later, she apologized for being "crude" or "direct" and attributed it to being French. Regardless of how someone describes their communication style, I believe healthcare professionals have a responsibility to communicate with compassion, especially when someone is sitting in front of them in a vulnerable state asking for help and paying a lot of money for said help. I cried throughout much of the appointment and left with extremely puffy, red eyes. I have never felt so uncomfortable and emotionally overwhelmed during a healthcare appointment. I also left without any real answers. There were guesses about what might be contributing to my symptoms and a discussion about potential lab work, but I did not feel like I received a clear explanation or meaningful plan for moving forward. I was then encouraged to purchase additional supplements, including products branded through the practice, which added even more expense to an already very disappointing experience. What bothers me most is that I was genuinely excited to explore a different approach to my health. I went into this appointment believing that a holistic provider might finally offer a perspective that I had not received elsewhere.
