AVOID IF YOU HAVE ANY FOOD ALLERGY OR INTOLERANCE - THIS CAFE IS DANGEROUS
I travelled by Red Funnel to the Isle of White over the weekend and must state that the service from the Refuel Cafe Restaurant was, for food safety reasons, the worst I have come across for many years: It is definitely not a safe place to eat.
I simply asked serving staff what food was Gluten Free, the woman serving then asked the chef who I overheard state 'Just tell him that it all contains Gluten'! This was a bit surprising as they were selling baked potatoes, which other staff advised were not coated in any gluten containing ingredients & they were selling bacon which other staff advised was baked separately, they thus had a number of items that even without checking I knew were gluten free.
Now it is possible that the chef is just very lazy and could not be bothered to explain what I, as a coeliac, could or could not eat. It is also possible that he is just stupid & does not know what Gluten is, but alas it became clear that the problem is far deeper than this.
When I then asked to see a list of ingredients to check for myself the staff could not provide one: Whilst this is not required by law until December 2014, all good restaurants/cafe's do so already as they have now had almost 3 years to do so. Red Funnel is clearly not willing to put the safety of customers first until they are forced to do so by law: Very poor indeed.
When I complained about this the chef even came out of the kitchen to try to intimidate me, but noticing that I am 6'5" tall & about 16 stone he changed his mind & returned to the kitchen: That behaviour was disgusting.
I then met a more senior member of staff, who apologised and stated 'he is not normally like this' but did nothing to correct the situation. Alas, this lazy and frankly dangerous manner of treating customers & serving food is normal practice for Red Funnel and puts their customer's health at risk.
This cafe simply does not know what is in its food: It is a health hazard to everyone, especially those with food allergies or intolerances.
If Red Funnel had any care for its customers it would shut Refuel immediately, prepare a food list for customers well ahead of December, train its staff, put customer safety before profit and sack staff who act as their chef did yesterday: Alas, whilst I am making a formal complaint to them, I doubt that they care enough about food safety or their customers health to do this.
I strongly recommend that you avoid this establishment at all costs; your health is too important to take the risk. read more
