Sunday's don't feel complete if I don't make it there for service. Hoboken Grace truly loves and cares for this community. The amount of time and effort they put into preaching the word of Jesus and showing love to others, not just in church, but outside of it, is fantastic and wholesome. I've found forever friends through my dinner group and the community service events we do & I have ultimately found place where I can feel the love of Jesus like never before. Honestly, it was one of the most moving and beautiful services I have ever attended. Although it is a small church (built in the 1870s), it has a dedicated and friendly congregation. The sanctuary is beautiful with pillars, and stained glass windows, and old Victorian chandeliers. There is a huge pipe organ (and an organist who knows how to play it!!) Although I am an official member of a big Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, I love going to St. Matthews in Hoboken...as it always has the BEST, most gorgeous MUSIC. Tonight the sacred music dated from the 9th century. A solo violinist played "The Crucifixion", Sam Barber. A male vocalist sang the Adagio, Samuel Barber. There was an absolutely amazing soprano who sang the Negro Spiritual "Calvary." Then they did "The Solemn Approaches" circa 9th century, led by the small but talented choir. If you are looking for an Easter week service that is meaningful, and has beautiful music and litugy, with a great pastor, and a truly gorgeous, historical setting, (and a small but friendly & dedicated congregation), look no further than St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran in Hoboken. Church is located at the corner of Hudson Street and 8th street. There is street parking. You can also get there by the No. 126 bus from the Port Authority bus terminal in Manhattan OR the PATH Train (just walk up Hudson Street 8 half-blocks (or along waterfront) to the church), Can also take the ferry from Manhattan, or light rail from elsewhere (like Edgewater or Jersey City) to the church. Join us for services on Easter. You will leave feeling moved, refreshed, and spiritually & emotionally uplifted. (You don't need to be "Lutheran" to attend. (I was raised Presbyterian...) Also, the church is VERY inclusive (so background, orientation, race, housed or homeless, ethnicity--ALL are made to feel welcome..) And if you love good music...and a very tasteful, moving spiritual service--you will not be disappointed. The people who put together the services really KNOW how to utilize the music, lighting, mood, liturgies, and the church's architecture to create a worshipful and amazing atmosphere--all from the heart.

The father leading the service provided background and context to scripture and to the traditional worship activities. Very interesting for non Catholic attendees! We plan to return!
