While there was no mass going on, I was still able to enter the church and sit in one of the pews quietly. There were a few other people here and there, so I kept to myself and maintained a peaceful attitude. I opted not to take pictures of the inside so there's that disappointment. But you can see from others, this is a fabulous church that is full of icons and pictures and portraits. The altar is impressive. This isn't my flavor of religion, but I definitely appreciated getting a bit spiritual this evening before heading back out into the highly secular Manhattan. I think the serenity of the place gets me more than my inclination to be a devotee. I like especially right by sunset you can hear the bats coming out the bell tower. This past Saturday, a brother and sister duet to The Prayer by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli left me speechless. Pastor Todd, as far as I can tell, is open minded and has a big heart for the community. His sermons are often hilarious and quite compelling. Visiting pastors also share some amazing sermons, I've cried in a couple and many have strengthened my relationship with God and inspired me to learn more about Christ. Not really sure what the grub schedule is, but they serve lunch sometimes after service. I've stayed once or twice and the food is pretty delish...one time they even gave out Subway sandwich lunches so that everyone could walk over to Central Park for a Sabbath picnic (Central Park is basically 2 blocks away). They have sooo many projects and clubs and things going on, you can tell the congregation is just fired up to be involved in bringing God to NY. This is the only church I would ever bring any friends who are interested in my religion or God. I like that I can bring my friends here and they won't feel like they're being told they're not good enough to be there. It's a great church to check out if you're looking for one in the city. They even have sermons online on the church website. I recommend listening to the sermon from Feb 27th "Higher than the Highest" for any young adult professionals. Awesome message.
