This pains me since I have been a customer for over 40 years (mom took me here as a child). The food has gone downhill. Ordered Almond Boneless Chicken and fried rice. The ABC was missing lettuce and topping. Rather it seemed like Sweet and Sour Chicken pieces with ABC sauce. Did not seem like one piece of chicken. For the first time the food did not taste good and the fried rice was awful. I ended up throwing it out. This is no longer the days of being greeted by Henry. Rather the place is in need of a good cleaning, some fresh paint, and a return to its root. Right now there is no dine in service. There is a dirty fake plexi glass wall and boxes stacked up. This is my opinion: If an old Cantonese restaurant is sketchy inside and out, they'll probably have some of the best American Chinese food that you've ever had. The prices will be stupid low, you'll be stuffed like Thanksgiving and you'll leave with a doggie bag because you won't be able to finish your food. Now I'm not one to talk out of my ass here so let me back that statement up. This last time I ordered off the lunch combo menu. For $8.01, tax included, I got a bowl, not a cup, of delicious Hot and Sour Soup, an excellent Spring Roll and a huge plate of War Su Gai. I seriously asked my server if she had given me the dinner portion by mistake. She just smiled and said "No, that's the lunch size". Super helpful, friendly and nice, I like the ladies that run this place. I've eaten here three times so far and I can safely say that Red Ruby is one of my local favorites. Get the War Su Gai, ABC, Beef and Broccoli, Lo Mein or whatever dish you like the most because you can't go wrong here. By the way, if you need a lunch date, hit me up. Since Henry sold it to the current owners, it hasn't been the same, but some dishes are still good. The sauce for the sesame chicken is still the same and the best I have ever had. Sometimes, the chicken has the texture of something other than regular chicken breast meat. I can't explain it. Lately it has been good. The Almond Chicken was the best in the world. A whole chicken breast, light tempura breading, then sliced. Amazing, when Henry was there. Now it is like chicken strips. Seriously? The dinner rolls were the best, but now it is hit and miss, because they can't seem to get it down pat. Since, Covid the restaurant only does carry out, like a lot of other restaurants. Thank you China for ruining our economy, especially restaurants. So, at Red Ruby, they have the restaurant closed off and just the front part of the building is open to customers to pick up their food. It is disgustingly dirty. How hard would it be for someone to clean that area up. I am sure a lot of people would be turned off by the filth. It should be cleaned up immediately. There is only carry out service, and that is quick and easy. Ambiance is nonexistent, except for the filthy lobby.. I wish Henry would come back and make me some Almond Chicken, and dinner rolls. Couldn't eat any of it, opted for leftover Wendy's instead. The good reviews must be well outdated, wont be eating here again. The food is always consistently good. The owner has always been very kind and personable. Know the ambiance is that of a 1970's maybe 1980's kung fu movie. But to be honest the look is kinda the reason you sit down and eat there. Always clean, and the portions have always been pretty good. I moved away from Michigan a while ago. However, I always go there when I'm in town, and have never found a restaurant that makes the food as good as Red Ruby. Not all Chinese restaurants are alike. I've lived in Arizona, California, and now in Hawaii, and I always compare them to Red Ruby. I love this place and people should definitely eat here. I know I will, when I come home again. read more

I used to post all of my food from here and refer people. We even would go for family outings with 15 people. I've been going for over 5 years, but last night takes the cake. I ordered #35, fried shrimp, fried rice, egg roll and shrimp egg foo young right? Tastes the fried rice, it tasted different, but couldn't put my finger on why. Tasted the fried shrimp first - it wasn't as pretty and fresh as it usual is, but tasted ok. But then but the egg roll and almost THREW UP in my mouth. The smell that came from that egg roll smelled like old chicken fat in a garbage on a summer day. I called immediately and told them the egg roll is spoiled and I didn't want any of the food and I would bring it back. Take it back, and because I ate 2 shrimps before tasting the spoiled egg roll, she refused to pay me a full refund. I will NEVER go back and I hope the health department reads this!! read more

Chinese food in America is fake Chinese food. I'm going to come out and say it out right. Fake to serve a western style of palette that wouldn't know authentic Chinese food if it came up and Wu-Shu'd them to their face. Some would argue and say it's the best Chinese food in the area. Here's a tip folks. If it has a General Tso's chicken on the menu... it ain't real Chinese food. It's YOUR brand of Chinese food a la Panda Express. Every Chinese restaurant is a variation of Panda Express especially if they have friggin' General Tso's Chicken on the menu. A simple Google search would show that General Tso didn't even eat a chicken dish popular enough to name it after him. So I want to pride myself on trying the unorthodox. I like to do a little bit more research and so when it comes to Chinese food whether it's Mandarin, Szechuan, Cantonese, or Hunan and if it's Northern or Southern Chinese, I need to know because I know 95% of the time, the menu will have General Tso's chicken and Western broccoli will be part of the dish when generally, authentic Chinese food will use broccolini instead, again, note for authentic. So, I scour Youtube and find a food blogger who lived in Northern China, sampled almost everything Chinese when he lived in New York City, and found all the little places that serve authentic Chinese food and even would go so far as to suggest that we should see if there's a "secret menu" which means you need to know what you want. I did. And Red Ruby was a massive disappointment. Not because the service was slow. Not because the staff spoke almost a blend of English that made it extremely difficult to understand. But because they wouldn't accommodate. When you have someone who comes into your restaurant and orders something that might in fact appeal to YOUR heritage, you'd like they'd be forgiving. They didn't. That's what bugs me. Normally, you would be met with a smile, maybe a wink and then the chef in the back who I know is Chinese would whip it up. Now again, these folks aren't entitled to accommodate sure, but it would be nice to know someone American is trying to get you all to cook up something off the beaten path. What Chinese restaurant big or small (excluding Panda Express) doesn't have a roast pork dish. I mean, they didn't have roast duck even ON the menu. 90% of almost every single Chinese restaurant has a duck dish of some sorts. Red Ruby had none. It was all garbage that catered to dumb down palette of cheap MSG laden taste that appeals to the masses that you may as well change your name to Panda Express Lux because you're definitely more sit-downy than anything else. Even reading the reviews of this place, I get why people love it. It's appealing and familiar. Asian places are supposed to at least hold to your traditional identity and make stuff that's regional to how you set it up. The Hunan beef was in fact not at all what I would like. The Hunan sauce was sweet with copious amounts of MSG. The vegetables were soaked and barely cooked. The meat, obvious a factory produced stringy mess of what you'd expect from a Panda Express as far as beef is concerned. Just a grand disappointment and I wasn't feeling all that Chinese-y either as far as dinner was concerned but asking the workers at the Asian Supermarket next door, which they all recommended Red Ruby, I decided to try it and boy, do your research next time instead of word of mouth. All in all... 1 star because no Char Sui, no duck, slowest service ever, and essentially... fake Chinese fit for the Western tongue but it's no Chinese food in a way that would impress anyone who knows Chinese food... ... and stop saying Panda Express is real Chinese! read more

A step back in time unique decorated a laid back atmosphere. Starting with Wonton Soup and Fresh squeezed hot pepper sauce. Had Curry Chicken lunch a mega bowl Sizzling Rice Soup spot on delicious. Everything I have had here is good, but the best is the Sesame Chicken. The chicken seems to be all white meat and the coating is not soggy. The sauce is flavorful and can be ordered mild or hot or in between. Week day lunch specials are down right cheap and come with soup, roll and tea. Okay I used to live in Redford and this was my favorite Chinese restaurant. A real mom and pop establishment. The owner and his wife and their college age children will work the front register. My orders have always been correct. The prices are cheap and the portions are generous . Everything we get tastes good and looks/smells good. Everything... Egg rolls, hot and sour soup, sesame chicken, shrimp fried rice, beef chop suey , general tso chicken, almond chicken, pepper steak, shrimp egg foo yung, ... Everything taste fresh and flavorful. The beef has the consistency of beef steak the chicken had the consistency of white chicken breast... I shudder to think what other restaurants use that has that rubbery texture... I looked for 4 years for a good substitute in my new community. I give up... It is a 20 min drive but if I want Chinese food it is worth the drive. read more

I don't live in the area anymore so I don't go very often, but was there today. I love their pork fried rice. It's the best I've ever had anywhere. Their egg rolls are good too, especially with the hot mustard. I believe they prepare the mustard themselves. The lunch specials are good, cheap and give you a lot of food for your money. The only thing I don't like is they don't serve fountain pop. You get one can of pop and a glass of ice. No free refills. read more
