Red River Book Store - what can I say... a treasure trove of delight!! If you want to spend an hour or two getting endlessly lost in mounds of books, records, comics, and what have you's this is the place for you. Or maybe you just want to giggle at the funny posters and dusty wacky toys hidden in the store. Surprisingly, there is a bit of organization amidst the chaos and books are categorized in sections and separated from other stuff. I've found some pretty great stuff in the poetry / essays area. Check out the art and photography section - you might find a great tabletop book. If you're waiting for a table at any of the restaurants around the corner it's worth stopping into and the building is incredibly beautiful and old if you can get past the dust and paper. Have gotten good deals here on books but be prepared there is no rhyme or reason to the way this messy bookstore is organized. The owner and his little assistant are not the most helpful people and both seem to suffering from hearing loss, it seems. Anyways, still worth a visit, parking limited beware! read more

We go once a week. I've got some good books there and my son some good deals on comics. We almost alway leave with something. It is a quirky place maybe not that well organized. I dig the place and would recommend it if you are visiting Winnipeg. If you go looking for a particular book in mind you may have a hard time finding it. read more

The have a lot of books and they are sort of organized. I have picked up several used books and in some cases hard to find one. I did not like the amount of effort it took on several occasions to find the item I was looking for, that being said after you get past the "hunt" the prices are good. I tend to view it as i will gve them a go after I fail at the other options. read more

I found this shop by accident during the Fringe Festival and had gone in because I wasn't finding anything on the street that I wanted and figured why not. When I got inside, it was pretty dusty and the floorboards creaked like nobody's business, and there were piles of stuff /everywhere/. It wasn't junk, though, just a bunch of cool stuff that didn't have a place anywhere else. Among further investigation of the shelves, everything is extremely unorganized, but at that point I'd already figured out that this isn't a place you go into to find something specific, you go inside to discover new things that you probably wouldn't find anywhere else. Definitely a quirky little place, but I found some rare Marvel posters and a great comic selection and got unbelievable deals on the items. This shop is just excellent. It has to be one of the few buildings left in WInnipeg from its older years. Wooden creaky floors, piles of books stacked all over the place. Even though it is messy and not well organized, it somehow just brings a smile and lightens hearts in its own way. Not to mention, all the books, games, movies, etc. are all at a reduced price than what they are in stores. For second hand things, they are in fairly good condition, some almost brand new. If you are a book lover and have your heart into these things, you'll go in there and immediately be drawn in by a book that caught your eye. This place has that sort of 'magic' to it. read more

I'm a native Winnipegger although I've lived and worked in London UK for 25 years and I've been going to the Red River Bookshop since I was 11, when it was on McDermott Avenue, and was first discovering science fiction, comics, arcade games (they had a classic BATTLEZONE machine there for awhile). It's raffish and a bit chaotic but it's still the best place to find rare book treasures and quixotic unexpected things. RRB is the perfect place for this and to browse. It's an institution and all fans of the weird and wonderful (or just plain literate) will find themselves something good there. read more

This store is amazing. True book lovers appreciate it. I can honestly say that I have never left there empty handed. I rarely have anything specific in mind when I go though. The books are categorized and the shelves labelled. There are piles of books on the floor. I go often, but not too often! I am sure that there is not a subject they can't cover. Don't go if you are in a rush, but if you have time to browse the treasures, enjoy! The prices are reasonable and if you make your way to the counter with a stack, the total never seems to equal as much as is pencilled inside the cover! =) read more
