One of the best Chinese restaurants in Glen Waverley, East Empress has long been one of my…read morefavourite places to grab takeaway from. I rarely eat in the restaurant itself because the takeaway menu is a bit cheaper, but when I do, I am always impressed with the immaculately set out tables, the service of the waiting staff, and the presentation of the food when it arrives. The prices are fairly high when you dine in, though. That isn't to say that it isn't worth it, because it really is. Most main dishes range from $20 to $35, but you're getting real quality for that price. For me, it's a bit of a treat, the same sort of thing that makes seeing a movie in Gold Class a special occasion. As I said, takeaway is a bit cheaper. My wife and I usually grab a beef with cashews, fried rice and a few dim sims, and it works out to be a bit under $25. They're pretty quick at getting the order ready, too. We usually drive up to the shop, phone the order in, and spend the next few minutes looking for a car park. By that time, it's ready to pick up and go. Totally recommend this place to anyone.

I'm a big fan of their banquets, it's a great way to get an impressive selection of food to fill you and satisfy your taste buds. I think that east empress stands out from other suburban Chinese restaurants, is the fact that it's a spacious layout with quite a modern feel. You're not just crammed into a little room that is cheap to run! There service has always been great when eating in and their prices are very reasonable for the serving sizes. They also do take out which is still kept to a great quality and is usual very quickly ready for pick up. I highly recommend it to everyone in the area.

This means that there will be a certain spiciness to many of the dishes, as compared with the more common Cantonese, Szechuan is typically hotter. Order yourself a hotpot. There is a good range of ingredients to choose from, and invariably the meal you are presented with will be delicious. A few times, I've gone with a fairly spicy option, and although it was probably too hot for me (if I'm truly honest with myself, it was pretty much thermonuclear, heat-wise), I could not stop myself from enjoying it. The service was alright. Typical suburban Chinese restaurant. Nice atmosphere, and it can be a busy place at times. Worth a look if you're feeling adventurous.

If I had chosen the hotpot, I would have likely written a negative review because the choices looked unappealing for the price. Luckily, I went for the cooked dishes instead. A night at a Sichuan restaurant wouldn't be complete without the signature spicy fish. This came in a massive bowl with lots of soft smooth fish meat. Though it was milder than many other places, it was still delicious on a cold day. The gong bao prawns were more honey sweet with peanuts than spicy. The three cup chicken looked ordinary but was surprisingly well made. The chicken pieces were crispy, and tasted great because of the fragrant garlic with a hint of honey sweetness.

This is the first and surely the last time we'll eat here. I normally don't post reviews but this…read moreone just made me angry. Cleanliness: The plate they served is not washed properly (first photo). And we found a black string in the spinach dish (second photo). Service: Terrible service. The waitress is cold with a robotic face. We waited for about 20 mins for our fist dish to arrive during off peak hours (10ish pm). Food: With higher prices than usual Chinese restaurants, chilly beef, sautéed chicken are astonishingly tasteless. And the Singapore noodles is plain. If we weren't hungry we probably wouldn't finish half of it. I'd leave 0 stars if I could. Don't come here.

That's generally where my experience of Rock Kung begins. The food is pretty good, and apparently the crabs are something of a speciality. If I've got a few mates with me, we'll generally grab half a roast duck and a few other bits and pieces, and we'll generally feel pretty full and well fed by the time we leave. Don't go with high expectations of service and décor. You'll be disappointed. Even during normal hours, there are plenty of stories of bad treatment of customers, and I've seen and experienced this myself on occasion. You've been forewarned.
