I was craving some nigiri and was given this place by a coworker. The weather was horrible so the restaurant nearly empty. We sat and ordered quickly. I got a 15 piece sushi with tuna roll. The food came out immediately. The clear soup was decent. The salad had so much ginger sauce on it that I didn't finish it. When the sushi came out I was definitely disappointed in the lack of variety. There were too many similar pieces. Some of the fish cuts were not smooth and looked torn. And this lady, who is apparently the restaurant manager, proceeds to tell me that it's MY fault. That there is NO WAY she could have made that mistake. And that she is COMPLETELY blameless. And she lays all of that out in one breath. Literally - I go, "this isn't what I ordered" and before I can finish that sentence, she rapid fires all of those accusations. It's as if she needs to cover her bases as FAST as possible and make sure that I, the paying customer, know that I am wrong and she is not. Well, first of all, I can almost guarantee that I did not order the spicy tuna. I don't eat tuna frequently. I have NEVER ordered spicy tuna for myself. I'll eat it if it's there, but I don't like it much. Second of all, is that how a restaurant manager does business? Blame the customer? Is that right? Red Ginger, your restaurant manager needs some training. This is completely inappropriate. Out of towner visiting for work. I saw the two star review down the list that said the sushi was very fishy, but saw many other positives so I figured must be a fluke. We brought our daughter for her first time ever trying the place while I was on lunch break, and it took 15 minutes to get water, the Kani Salad was dry, and 30 minutes later we still didn't have our orders. Thrilled the QC is getting more Sushi options. When in the Quad Cities, I have visited the Red Ginger several times for both dinner and lunch. My first time, I loved the decor - clean, modern and the right amount of Asian touches with unique dinner booths. The sushi was ok, but the wine list is in need of a huge improvement. (We have mentioned it every time) Go for the cocktails if you need an adult beverage. Each time we have been back, the restaurant gets more and more cluttered with cheap Asian restaurant posters, feature signs, etc. And the TV doesn't need the shopping network or cheap TV showing. Put on an Asian movie with subtitles or a sports network - but I would suggest the owners figure out what they are trying to be. read more

The best place for sushi in the quad cities. I go here frequently for my sushi cravings. Prices are moderate for sushi. We frequently take advantage of the happy hour between 4pm and 6pm: 3 rolls for the price of 2. Now, Being said that it is really good sushi and by far the best in the region, it does not compare with the sushi you can find in big metropolitan cities. To say that we left here confused and disappointed is a bit of an understatement. This was overall one of the most bizarre dining experiences we've had. The overall energy of this place feels chaotic and disorganized, but even worse, the service was just downright strange. After waiting for about 10 minutes at the table, our waitress came and asked if we were ready to order. In response, we said that we'd like two Mai Tais and an order of cal.... one syllable into calamari, though, she abruptly walked off without taking the rest of our order. After another several minute wait, she came back to ask if we wanted Mai Tais (but still did not take our food order). Eventually, the drinks come to the table, but they were bright orange and looked unlike ANY Mai Tai we'd ever seen. At best, they were Tequila Sunrises, but not good ones at that. For food, we ordered calamari as an appetizer and three different sushi rolls. Perhaps their definition of calamari is different from our definition of it being squid, but what we got was a plate of tempura vegetables and a couple fried sticks of either fish or chicken (it was white, but we couldn't decide which one). Needless to say, the bad drink and the mystery appetizer were not anything that we wanted, and this was some of the weirdest, subpar service that we've ever gotten. I love that it is hip but that there are always children there too! The Sakura roll is amazing, topped with fresh jalapeño that's always hot-and the perfect bite the roll needs. The unagi was extremely fishy (caterpillar roll) which was the first roll I've left half eaten on the table and our spicy salmon roll lacked any flavor. The rainbow roll was run of the mill. Overall I'd say the caterpillar was one star, the spicy salmon was two and the rainbow was a three averaging out to a solid two. I've been here twice, the first for my husbands birthday and the second with when my parents were visiting. Our first visit was amazing, hardly anyone was there at about 6 PM on Tuesday. Our server was attentive and the food came out quickly, it was all amazing. Edamame and gyoza, a bowl of miso soup for my husband and 3 rolls of sushi. It was the perfect amount and totally put this place on the map for us. The second time was much busier, a Friday night. I called ahead and they kept a table or us, so we were seated right away. Unfortunately they only had 2 servers to cover the entire restaurant, which meant both women were extremely busy. Once we were actually able to order (we had a choices selected but had to wait about ten minutes before one of the servers was available) the food came out quickly and everything was delicious. I always check out sushi places by trying something without raw fish, just to see how their quality is before I delve into something that can actually be dangerous to eat unless the chef knows what he/she is doing. The staff could not have been overwhelmed at the time, as I was the only person seated at the bar, there was one couple seated at a table behind me, and a small family of four seated in a booth across from me. Those two families were being taken care of from my observation as they had received their food and drinks sometime before I arrived, or shortly after. But after being served a glass of water, I sat for more than 5 minutes with no further inquiries from the staff to see if I had decided on something, or needed help with the menu. I'd love to rate this place higher, but I can't. My husband and I went once before and were underwhelmed. Over a year later we tried it again, hoping it was a fluke, but either flukes happen twice or else it's really just not that good. I'd like to break it down into sections for a more comprehensive review. - Establishment - 3.5 stars: There're some nice, gimmicky Japanese style tables for people wanting to experience Japanese style dining. Half the walls look dated but the place is clean and spacious. Overall pleasant to look at. - Service - 3 stars: The wait staff is friendly but openly uninformed about the food they serve. I overheard another customer ask what was on their chef's pick sushi roll plate and the two waitresses there admitted they don't eat sushi and don't know what's on it. In many dining establishments, it's imperative for wait staff to know what they're selling. - Food - 2 stars: This has the biggest weight in my review. Red Ginger specializes in sushi, they have no hibachi seating, they have a small selection of other foods, but in their menu, sushi is the largest selection to choose from. The flavour is sub-par and heavily imbalanced, with 3 different rolls we ordered there was a dominant flavour (for instance in any roll with "spicy" something in it, sesame oil is the most pervasive flavour) rather than a balance that show cases each ingredient and type of fish. The presentation is also very poor where ingredients hang out of the ends or the ends are cone-shaped due to uneven placement of the ingredients before rolling the sushi -- I have done the same quality at home or better and I'm not a chef. The pieces are also cut sloppily; while the cuts themselves are clean, the pieces are each a different thickness in slice. Rolls that are supposed to have a garnish of tobiko or crisped panko don't always have the garnish on each piece so sometimes you get a bite that's missing ingredients. That said, the sushi is "okay" but remember that you're paying a premium for the art that is sushi where flavours are meant to be balanced so you can taste every ingredient, combined with a beautiful presentation. Why I weight the food heavily and the exacting standards: In Japanese cuisine, the mantra is you first eat with your eyes then with your mouth. With sushi, even though rolls are Americanized, there is a strong association of the cuisine with Japanese aesthetics, even down to the taste. This is why you sometimes see swirls of sauce on the plates. When you go to a sushi restaurant, you're actually paying for all of these things mentioned. read more

This is one of our staples and has been for several years although we only go a few times a month. Even so, the staff remembers you and will ask if you want your regular order while bringing your regular drink without asking. That's not easy to find these days. Food is very good. I usually have a favorite at each restaurant and my favorite here is the French kiss roll. That said, everything else I've tried is good too. Their food tasted fresh and the recipes are great; try the SOHo (for raw), Sexy Lady (for cooked). Happy hour specials are enticing, (after 3 weekdays). Their alcoholic beverages are some of the best I have had at a restaurant. There's no skimping on good booze with healthy amounts of it in their cocktails. Came here for lunch with my Dad when I was in town. I kept hearing from everyone that this place by far has the best sushi in town, so I had to try it out! The atmosphere is very nice. They have plenty of tables, or you can sit in the more traditional tables where you can sit on mats in a circle. I ordered the Maki combo (comes with 3 rolls, soup, and a salad). You get a lot for your money for sure. The Maki was fresh and put together well. They have plenty of different entrees and rolls to choose from. The service was a little slow (there were not many people there at lunch time). She was very nice, but we had to remind her about a drink we ordered and refills. The QCA has come a long way in sushi from the days when SuperTarget was the only place to have it. And amazingly, the majority of our sushi restaurants are, well, good. Better, in fact, than a lot of what I've found in bigger cities. Perhaps it's because there's a perception that Midwesterners won't touch exotic cuisine, and must be won over. If so, please keep winning us! I just tried Red Ginger for the first time, and now I'm kicking myself for not cashing in on a local Groupon-type deal, because this place bears regular revisitation. First, the atmosphere: Quiet (although with a game playing at the bar), with use of simple, visually soothing materials like stone and fresh bamboo plants to create an understated, elegant simplicity. Staff were attentive, again in an understated way. There was no pestering, just a quiet monitoring of the tables to ensure everyone was satisfied and engaged. Food? Ah, see, here's the make-or-break point. I'll eat sushi at a roadside vendors (in Japan...not so much here) if the sushi's good, and have no complaints. And I'll snub the most beautifully appointed, highest rated place in Zagat's if they serve me something not-so-fresh. Red Ginger had fresh down pat. I had the sashimi and some lovely uni, and both were just about perfect. Firm and lush, no graininess, no smell, no hints of degradation. I'd have only two requests: the fish was sightly chilled, and I prefer cool or room temp (I suspect that most Americans feel more comfortable with the idea of fish on ice, which seems to be increasingly a horrible trend); and more, please! Oh, don't worry, they don't underfeed...I just like to eat a lot. One of these days one of our good sushi restaurants will offer an all-you-can-eat special similar to those found on the West Coast (NOT a buffet!) and I will die happy. And possibly fat. read more

Now with 5 visits over both lunch and dinner, I can say I have a new favorite. While I have not had any of the cooked dishes, the sushi and rolls were all delicious, especially the Tuna Martini. Yum! The edimame was hot, lightly salted and easy to pop; the kani salad was spicy without being overwhelming; the sushi was fresh and tasty. The wine selection is underwhelming, but the cocktails have been very good. There teas wasn't extremely hot which was nice and understandable but I'm use to super hot tea from the Japanese restaurants back home (California). The miso soup was good, nice and hot but when the sushi rolls came out I was disappointed in how small they were. I guess I should have gone with sashimi instead of the rolls but I've never seen rolls so small ever. That's the reason for my rating, as far as service I'm sure you won't be disappointed. The food is pretty decent. But I've been several times and the wait staff has never been friendly--but they aren't rude, so it doesn't bother me much. My gripe with the place is that when I dined there today they did not accept my coupon, which I downloaded FROM THEIR OWN WEBSITE! They said it expired in May 2014. And here it is August 2015! (I was using my phone and didn't see the very small expiration date.) I think that's pretty low.
