My wife and I took weekly riding lessons at Red Buffalo through Spring and Summer of 2025 to prepare for a vacation in Montana. Crystal and her team are top-notch professionals. Most of our private lessons were with Ally, whose knowledge far exceeds her years. I had zero prior experience, and my wife took lessons as a teen. But neither of us would've been prepared to enjoy riding in Montana without the professional guidance (in the ring and eventually on the trail) we received at Red Buffalo. When managing dozens of animals, along with customers of varying skill levels, there are bound to be occasional hiccups, so you need to approach it with that in mind. But I've watched many times as the Red Buffalo staff got mixed groups of adults and/or children situated on their horses and out for their trail-rides in a safe and organized manner. All the animals appear healthy and cared-for, and the staff are all friendly and professional. I would recommend Red Buffalo to anyone in the Montgomery County area looking for a fun and safe horseback riding experience. read more

My lady got us a gift certificate for an hour of horseback riding on the trail. We had a tour guide to show us lead us around the property and taught us how to ride the horses and made sure we were comfortable. The horses were easy to ride and the trail had a beautiful scenery with snow sprinkled all over the trees and grass. It was also really cool to experience feeding them carrots. My sister surprised me for an early birthday celebration and I loved it! Our guide, Rachel was very sweet, patient and funny. All of the horses were beautiful and the trail ride was very easy to follow. Before the ride, the staff told us how to handle the reigns, a little bit about our specific horse (mine loved to eat any chance she could), and the throughout the trail ride they repeated the reign instructions which was helpful. My mom and I completed their adult horse back riding camp. We learned/did so much and were thoroughly impressed. My mom who has a passion for horses got to live out her horse dreams for a week as she got to corral the horses from the field, feed them, groom them, saddle them, trail ride, bareback ride, trot, jump, etc. I myself was just there as moral support but even I had a great time and learned a lot. The staff were very friendly, knowledgeable, accommodating and helpful. They made sure we were all comfortable with the various activities and even helped me build my confidence on a horse. We are very lucky we found this place and can't wait to go back. My guy said he wanted to go horseback riding and that's just what we did. Tried to call to make reservations Labor Day weekend but phone kept ringing so I sent an email instead. Received a quick email response, was able to callback & get through to secure resos for 2 ppl a week out since LDW was unfortunately booked. Girl on the phone gave clear and concise instructions: show up 30m before ride time, wear long pants, wear closed toe shoes, cash/checks accepted, pls tip your tour guide, BYO bike helmet or use their helmets FOC. We opted for the 1hr trail ride which is very reasonable at $40pp/hr. I rode Ranger and my guy rode Leo. Ranger was such a beautiful, gentle giant... so CHILL. Leo is a handsome stud, full of personality. Sydney was our guide with years of equestrian experience. She told us how all the horses here are rescues, shared stories on some of the horses and some riding terminology. Trail was scenic and we kept the horses at a slow speed. The hour went by pretty quick too! Amazing experience and I already recommended this place to my friends. read more

I was visiting PA from the Chicagoland area and we were looking for something different to do. Riding horses through a state park was definitely something different and AMAZING. The horses are very well behaved and the tour guide herself was knowledgeable and friendly. The experience could not have been better. A fantastic experience! 5 of us did a 2 hour trail ride using a LivingSocial coupon. We couldn't have asked for a better day. The horses we're lovely and so were the people! A young girl was our trail guide and she did an awesome job! I'm an English rider but riding western was a refreshing switch up. The horses are well tempered and well trained to stay in line and do their thing. Only once did I see a horse get spooked and it was only people the person riding her was handling her completely and utterly wrong and the poor horse had no idea what it's rider was asking her to do. If you're a novice rider honestly it's your responsibility to do some research before climbing on an animal for a trail ride. This is not a horse riding lesson. It's a trail ride. Even if you google "basic riding 101" you can learn a lot. You wouldn't get into a car and drive it down your street without learning the basics would you? But I have to hand it to these horses, they are very good at handling riders from the most inexperienced to experienced. But the trail they took us on was great, seeing the fall foliage was beautiful. The people and animals were wonderful. Would absolutely go here again! read more

Just finished my first horseback ride ever! It was awesome! Mary was my guide & she was great. Very comfortable to talk to, very experienced. She guided us with a blind horse & if no one told me I would have had no idea. Mary told us about the land, houses that were still on the trails, & we learned a ton about horses. We walked through water which was super fun. We got to stay after our ride to ask questions, pet horses & learn more about our guide. I was very nervous to be riding but everyone calmed me. By the middle of the ride I felt very comfortable directing the horse, there were a few times we sped up a little HOW FUN! Great way to start my weekend & a great way to spend an anniversary! I bought a Livingsocial coupon for $35 for a 2-hour horseback trail ride and went with 3 other friends. When we arrived, we realized that they were way overbooked and understaffed. I sat on the back of the horse on a 90 degree day for a half hour before we actually moved. There were two staff riders (one in the front, one in the back) and about 20 customers. Most of the other riders had never ridden before - including 2 families with VERY YOUNG CHILDREN (all riding on their own horses) ... the youngest girl must have been 5 or 6 years old. At one point one horse got scared by a deer, causing all the children to scream, which caused a near stampede of horses - with no trained riders nearby for help. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. The horses seemed really in poor shape too. They kept eating along the trail as if they had never seen leaves in their lives. One horse was missing an eye. Most horses looked badly groomed and had festering sores/bites on their bodies. Also, though we carried our own water, there was no water break for the horses. BOTTOM LINE - I WOULD NOT COME HERE AGAIN AND AVOID IT IF YOU HAVE KIDS. read more

This fell short of my expectations. I was an avid horseback rider as a child and was happy to bring my 23 year old daughter to experience a ride. I have done other controlled rides and knew that we would not have the same experience I had owning a horse, and was ok with that aspect. However, no one really explained what we were supposed to do, particularly with regard to staying in line, how to get up on the horse, how to handle the horse, etc. The lack of direction resulted in some chaos - one rider shrieked the entire time as though she thought the horse she was on was going to eat her; my horse kept trying to eat shrubs, and I wasn't certain whether it was permitted; etc. The people who led the ride were very young and appeared disorganized and unable to lead. If you are going to have a controlled ride, you need to have control. read more

I bought a two hour guided groupon for my friend and daughter who were visiting for the weekend. The staff were nice (young) but energetic. However, the earlier tour was running a little late which pushed back our tour. We were patient and within 15 minutes they got everyone ready to go. Since I was waiting for my friend I expected them to be back in two hours. They told us it would be 1 hour and 45 minutes because the set up time was counted in the two hours. That seemed reasonable. Instead, they came back in an hour. The tour was rushed in order for them to get back on schedule. I was very disappointed because I felt like we didn't get what we expected and there were no apologies for it- especially because it was a gift for a friend. Still, the experience was good and the ranch was nice. I just don't like how it was run and the fact that they didn't give customers what they paid for. read more

I just want to start by saying the horses were great, the trail was fine, the staff was very nice and (as mike marino informed us repeatedly) paid well. We signed up for a 2 hour group ride, we had a Living Social coupon, and we showed up on time, but were informed we couldn't ride with the group because of the coupon. We were allegedly supposed to tell them when we made our reservations that we had a coupon so they could schedule us in a coupon only group. The coupon itself didn't really say that, it was vague, but it did say in big print "present voucher upon arrival". They were supposed to ask us if we had a voucher when we called. We all goofed up. But then the owner, Mike Marino, spent 20 minutes condescending to us and explaining basic math about why he schedules all the coupon people together so that he can make more money. Dude, you're a retired lawyer and DA, we all know you have a pension. Seriously, if it hadn't been almost a decade since I or my mother rode, or the fact this was my birthday present to her I wouldn't just told the guy off and left. But after I explained that no we can't wait 4 hours for the trail ride he wanted us to go on and yes I came here all the way from South Philly, he finally worked something out for us. But honestly, the tone. But what do you expect from a large, aggressive, former lawyer who has a primarily young female staff he spends all day bossing around? The guy needs to read like Margeret Atwood or take a women's studies class, because he is just totally oblivious to his target audience. But all of the horses are great, which I guess is what counts. read more

Very enjoyable trail ride. I was pleased to find this ranch relatively close to home. My son (11) and I did a one-hour group trail ride together. The staff was really good with him, giving good encouragement when he was able to keep his horse from snacking on the trail. My four stars instead of 5 is because it was pretty busy, and therefore instructions were a little sparser than they could have been. TLDR: Don't expect a personable guided trail ride. Expect to be treated like a another payment, with tips EXPECTED but not EARNED, and expect to spend half the time on pavement, not wooded trail. I took my two children out to Red Buffalo Ranch this morning for a ride. The horses seemed to be well fed and cared for. Their saddle pads, however, were pretty thin and falling apart. I would not personally use those on my own horse as they are well past their prime of usefulness. Our tour guide, Mya, didn't find out any information about the skill level of the group, names, or anything else. She introduced herself on her horse at the lead and most of the people behind me, my daughter and two other strangers, could not hear her. She was not relaxing at all - on the contrary, she seemed to snap constantly. We spent a good portion of the ride on pavement - not trail. She constantly gave directions to lean back or forward, said something about mud and always told people to not let their horse's eat while she let her horse eat constantly. The majority of the ride her saddle was completely crooked (which can hurt a horse) and I noticed she didn't have her feed in the stirrups at times, which my son saw and attempted to do as well. I informed him not to ride in that manner as it can be unsafe. If a guide is going to expect certain behaviors of those following them, they should exhibit those behaviors. I've ridden for a long time and can direct reign with one hand, for example, when the horse is in a line and following, this becomes even easier. However, Mya made sure to yell at me for not using two hands, even though I wasn't neck reigning and the reigns I had were tied off too short which made direct reigning with one hand preferable. Also, she herself was not using two hands. My horse, at one point, started a trot and I quickly backed the horse down, after which she yelled at me to not "run the horse" as it would "hurt the horse." I didn't run the horse at any point, I did however respond and appropriately back my horse down to a walk when Tonka changed her gate. Mya seemed so up-tight and irritable that it made what should have been a relaxing ride not relaxed at all. Thankfully the horses were well behaved with great personalities. The riders were not informed to do simple things beforehand such as foot placement in stirrup (balls) and keeping their heels level\down and off of the sides of their horse. This simple instruction would help new riders a lot as they may not realize that they are cuing the horse to run and also pulling back at the reigns asking the horse to stop. I noticed this problem with one of the people that we were riding with, as a result, she was constantly in the horse's mouth and the horse was throwing its head out of frustration a lot. As for the guide, as soon as we arrived back she was off and gone, I had my son find her to give her the tip that is, "customary and appreciated" but was not earned, IMO. She quickly took it with a quirt "thanks" and walked away. If we go back, because it is cheaper to scratch the horsey itch while I cannot devote time to owning my own horses atm, we will be sure to request a different tour guide who is hopefully more personable and relaxed: the tour guide is part of the paid experience and should act as such. We visited here to celebrate a birthday, the birthday girl wanted to go horseback riding. First time for all of us (group of 3) terrific time! Irene (Eileen?) helped us , she rode in the front, the trail was nice, quiet, peaceful. The horses weren't difficult, but deff needed to be attentive & patient. The instructor was kind & explained anything we needed clarification on. The hour ride was a lot of fun, we look forward to doing it again. This was one of the worst experiences of my life. First my boyfriend and I walked in to be chastised by an older man (I think the owner) about not printing out our Groupon Voucher. He asked if I was told to print it out and I said I didn't remember because it was a month or two ago and he said it was really difficult for him to write down the numbers... I offered to help write down the 10 letters and he said no but I should have known to print... From there I had a bad taste in my mouth but we moved forward. He then told us helmets were not required but he wanted us to wear them and forced us to wear them - I was going to anyway but none of them even fit my boyfriend's head so he had to be uncomfortable the whole time. The first part is to be "paired" with a horse. It was totally unorganized and there was no thought to pairing. We finally start the ride and there were 20 people with one guide all the way in the front. I asked to be next to my boyfriend and they separate us so we couldn't even chat the whole ride. We could not hear a WORD the guide said and she would give warnings that never made it back to us. We had to "pull over" for cars and didn't even know how... the horses did not seem very well trained and kept eating. No instructions were given on if we should let them eat so people would stop and let them. One horse literally kept standing on two legs with a little girl on it - SCARY. Finally - the horses got crazy and one started running backwards and flipped the woman off. It was horrific! The guide came over and GETS HER BACK ON THE HORSE!!! I would have liked to end there but couldn't jump off my horse (being inexperienced). We finally get back to the ranch and the woman who fell was in so much pain she fell off AGAIN and the horse almost walked on her. I would NEVER go back here again!!! Not good for young inexperienced riders. My 11 year old daughter was thrown from the horse and broke her leg. The two young girls working that day barely told my daughter anything about how to ride. This was my daughters first time on a horse. There were two young girls with us ad they had little or no experience also. The horses try to eat the grass when we got into an open area. The young girl leading us said pull the reins up, don't let them eat. So my daughter did several times. One time the horse pulled the reins out of her hand and the horse spoked and jumped and ran. My daughter fell off the horse and broke her tibia, shin bone. The girl leading us seemed to not care to much and looked at my daughter who was screaming in pain as if she was making it up. We ended up putting my daughter back on a horse and I walked her back to the stable. No apologies that I remember. They have no emergency plan for anything like this. I decided what to do saying we had to go back now, and that she was in real pain. I took her directly to the hospital and she spent the next two days there getting her leg bone aligned and casted. She had to be transferred to DuPont Hospital in Delaware. The owner called me a few days later after we reported what had happened. And he tried to defend his staff. I told him the full story and then tried to say since I was experienced it was somewhat my fault. I let his staff do their job of explaining to my daughter how to use the reins. I explained to my daughter after she was done. Again how to steer and stop the horse. But these horses are used to lead following. They would barely respond to our inputs. And the reins were to short on my daughters horse. The horse pulled the reins out of her hands when he yanked his head down. I am taking them to court. My daughter will be in a cast for 6-8 weeks plus rehab afterwards. She was in so much pain they put her on morphine for two days. Most defiantly not a place for inexperience riders. Use your own judgment. And the horses name was Bolt. We should have know better. read more

Went for a ride at Red Buffalo Ranch this morning. A one-hour trail ride costs $35, which i thought was reasonable. I called a few days before, and on the morning-of to confirm the ride. The staff was friendly and accommodating, and seem to care for their horses. For the one-hour trail, be prepared to go through woods, and even through a stream, through bugs and roots, and meadows with power cables overhead. We had a great time on on ride. The staff is really young. All of the girls looked to be about 16-18 years old. I had not been on a horse in about 20 years and my boyfriend has never been on a horse. We booked a private tour for the 2 of us with our own guide. I highly suggest a private trail ride over a random group. I can see it being chaotic if you had a lineup of 10 horses with people who have various levels of experience riding horses. When we got there we signed it and after that it was a bit disorganized as to what we were supposed to do. So we just stood outside while we waiting for the big group that was out to return. They seemed to be rushing around as there were numerous groups booked to go out at the same time as us. When they first brought me my horse I mentioned that the saddle looked a bit small for my booty. They laughed and told me to get on. So I did. When I mentioned again the saddle seemed small the older woman working there said that it was a child's saddle and told them to get me an adult saddle. They were too busy so they said just bring her a different horse with an adult saddle. I then mounted the horse only to be told to get off since the saddle was not tightened. Which I realize I could have gotten injured from mounting a horse without a secure saddle. Thankfully that woman was there and notice because the other 2 people there were like.... "It is really lose"? They got us ready to go and gave no instruction on what to do. Which in hindsight it a bit concerning. We have no experience with horses and you would think a horse 101 would be given in a quick 15 minutes while we stood around and waited for our horses to be ready to mount. Maybe a what to expect.... Or what to do in the event of..... Our guide was very nice. She's been riding horses for 2 years. She seemed very knowledgable about horses. While we had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I would not suggest this place for inexperienced riders. I could see how this could potentially not be a great experience for someone. I would however suggest this as a place for people who do have experience and comfort with horseback riding. Like I said overall we had a great time.... I just think they need more organization of their business to make people more comfortable with getting on an animal that weights 1000+ lbs! And I highly suggest inexperienced riders research to find a place that does give more instruction for someone with little to no experience riding horses. read more

A group of us decided to try Red Buffalo Ranch and signed up for a 2 hour trail ride. It was great! The horses are obviously well taken care of, they weren't your usual nose to tail- burnt out horses. The trail ride is exactly that, you are going up hills and down into creek beds and ducking branches,, great fun! We had a trail guide- Caitlin- who showed us a really good time-- in spite of the dreary drizzly day. The staff started out by assessing our ability to ride, then matched us up to the horse we would ride for the next two hours. All in all a great way to spend an afternoon! read more
