I stopped in for my Twin Cities Independent Bookstore Passport and got an amazing Two Minute Tour! The store is organized by age and decorated in a whimsical way. When you walk in, you are greeted with books for infants/toddlers. As you move towards the back you find middle school aged reads, then a YA/Teen section, and a smaller adult section at the back. Even as someone without kids, the adult section was small but intriguing! A discount section is located in the basement. A must revisit for me!

Local. Independent. Warm atmosphere. Children's bookstore. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. What more could you possibly ask for? This book store has been here since my son was small (my favorite memory was bring him & my niece to listen to local author Nancy Carlson read her book). Recently we brought my grandchild-she had the same reaction! She loved running through the store, laughing at the large bear, finding more books than she could carry. This is a true good find in St. Paul!!

I can't keep my kids away. They would be at the red ballon EVERY day if they could. What a neighborhood gem.

Weird and wonderful, eclectic selection of used books in a pocket-sized space. The first book that…read morecaught my eye was a book in French about China. My husband saw a book about making soymilk and a graphic introduction to Derrida directly opposite. How many bookstores can give you that kind of experience? It's the kind of store where you will find your college reading list (words of one fellow customer). Or that old cookbook that your Mom used to have. That random book your college friend told you about but you never bothered to pick up. A classic graphic novel that your art class peers recommended. You won't find everything you ever wanted to read, but there's a good chance you will find something that you didn't know you wanted to read. The store is a real community effort. One of the owner's friends happened to be there, and said that the owner had another store-full of books in his house. He had been collecting books over 15-20 years, carefully curating them for just this time. The shelves were made with brackets from a local department store that was closing. The owner's brother made the beautiful book cases on the floor. We found this place by chance looking for something to do Christmas day. In the spirit of the bookstore name, they had Jewish trivia, bagels, and mimosas. Some other people trickled in for the trivia, others did kind of float in and browse the books. We gathered around a small table toward the front and had a blast. The store was closing up soon after our trivia game ended, so I'll be back at some other time when it's warmer. A great addition to the neighborhood!

Bookstore. Stationary. Bookworm gifts. Cafe. Records. Toy and game section…read more Far fewer employees than when I used to frequent bookstores as a college student with her nose in a stack of textbooks just about every day, which means they juggle more hats. The person who saw me waiting at the info desk and helped me locate the section that "Ordinary People, Extraordinary Times: How to Reclaim Your Power, Fight for Freedom, and Reimagine Democracy" should be in, the same section I'd scoured for 10 minutes prior to visiting the info desk, was immediately off to assist another guest after pointing at the section I'd visited and giving extensive details about the section. They found me again five minutes later with the book in hand - it was a new release apparently being featured on a display table. When I checked out, B&N printed me a café coupon. Apparently, the system had caught on that I ignore incentives to grab cakes, cookies, sandwiches, and coffee, but I'll immediately redeem coupons for tea. And the sole barista managing all the cafe orders at Starbucks: The same teammate who'd located the book for me. The cost of books and trickets is in line with retail pricing. The bonuses of this place are the quiet, spacious environment welcoming of readers and students alike, the wide variety of cute and clever trickets, and I suppose the fact that I'm likely going to continue getting $1 incentives to indulge in matcha lattes. Bonus points for the democracy display and multiple little displays of the constitution and its explanations for the general public.

After the depressing visit to the rather empty Marshalls store, I decided to stop in to Barnes & Nobles, the other open tenant. I love Barnes & Nobles because it always cheer me up with all the colorful books and a Starbucks! But not here. I walked into to the coffee shop and I was rather disappointed as all the pastries and coffee cakes were lacking... I decided to just order iced tea. Then I found it annoying that the barista being preoccupied with talking on the walkie to security about a shoplifter than making my iced tea...so...as soon as I got my iced tea in hand, I left the immediately to get out of the uncomfortable space.
