Part of our New Year's break this year was trying to find a place to recycle an old tv -a smart Samsung that stopped getting software updates like 4 years ago. After a small amount of googling I found RecycleForce and now I don't know how I didn't know about them sooner! They were fast, provided a receipt without even asking, and after looking into their history and the impact they've had as a workplace for ex-offenders I'm proud to have supported them! There is a small fee for TVs, monitors, and HVAC/refrigerant products. It was $25 to recycle my TV but the price of mind that it wasn't simply headed for a landfill was worth it.

So now months later even though we have every other week recycling service from Republic we still use Recycle Force for the bulky stuff.

But if you have one of those items that have been deemed necessary for recycling, this place will take care of it properly for you for only $20 per item. I recently tried taking my old, defective large screen to a Best Buy, but was told it was too large for them. No explanation other than that. So, after trying to contact several other waste management/recyclers in the metro area and not getting any return phone calls, I found this place on Indy's east side that opened at 9 a.m. on Monday. I called ahead to make sure they were open and that the large screen wasn't too large. They said to come on over. When I got there, I went inside and paid my $20 fee and went to the dock they said to use. We pulled our vehicle up to the dock and one of their workers hopped down and unloaded the large television by himself and carried it to the dock for us. No sweat or effort needed by me. They even disposed of an old dvd player for free! Note that this place isn't the easiest to spot. If you are familiar with the east side, there is a large lake for a business that was called "Just Add Water" that used to have a lighthouse and let you try out different small boats before purchase. It is easily visible from I-465 just south of Washington Street. Franklin is the first street east of 465 on Washington. Just drive south 3 blocks on Franklin and when you see the lake on your west side of the road, look over to the east side. The sign out by the street says "Tradition Warehouse & Logistics". Pull into the parking lot on the south side of the building and head east. You will see some loading docks and a sign that is with a "TR" and Technology Recyclers. That is the office where you climb a few stairs and tell them what you want to have recycled. Once you pay, they tell you which dock to go to and send one of their gentlemen to unload your equipment. We just had the television, so we paid $20. Any additional tv's, laptops, or monitors would also be charged the same disposal rate. I am not sure if they have any restrictions on electronics or not and how much lead time you need to give when ordering pickup, but if those run as smoothly as the drop off, they might earn that 5th star! This leaves a LOT of things that still need to be recycled, but with no home. Rock-Tenn is that home. Rock-Tenn will take nearly everything. Plastics 1-7, cardboard, even phone books. In fact they have a special dumpster for phone books. So the next time you go out to your mailbox, see the stack of phone books that have been left, wonder why we still need paper phone books in 2011, then decide to get rid of them, take them here. Pros: - They are a single sort facility so you don't have to separate your plastics from glass and such, but try not to throw garbage in their bins. - Their gates are typically open 24 hours, but even if they are not, you can park outside them and walk a short distance (20ft) to the bins. - The bins are very large so there's plenty of room, especially in the back because most people are too lazy to walk to the back of the bins. Cons: - Their parking lot puts on a clinic on how to make white mud. If you just washed your car or are wearing your vintage chucks, i recommend parking in the road area otherwise your wheel wells and shoes will be covered. -They don't take Styrofoam. Yes, I know it's typically #6, but their facility doesn't have the machine to handle it properly. -Lazy patrons tend to not pick up their dropped recycling, so the area around the bins is often littered with lazy people evidence.

I did not see a phone book booth bin this time, and I unfortunately had some to recycle. I put them in the cardboard bin. :/ I know they take them from previous visits. I feel bad when I do stuff like that, but at least I am recycling?? In Seattle, they just put everything in one bin, and it gets picked up. Also, I saw another reviewer said they think they are open 24/7. I have specifically looked a few times on my way home from work downtown, and have noticed that the gates were closed. I didn't notice a chain, but I would figure that they don't want people all over the property all the time. So glad someone on the south side offers this service for free. Awesome-and easy access!!
