Instead, the stalls mainly sell produce, meat, cheese, and seafood, which would be great if you were a local, but we were just visiting. There are a few stalls selling things like candies/honey/jams, that were reasonably priced, so we bought a few of those to bring home as souvenirs. We spent probably about half an hour walking around and made it through the entire market. It was fun to walk around and see all the local goods/products, but don't expect a lot of options for good food if you're hungry.

I know the Bridgestone Irish Food Guide editorial came down on them like a pack of Dutch defenders in the ninth edition. But the products of many of the food producers lavishly praised by Bridgestone are to be seen in the major supermarkets. Tesco spend two billion (their own figure) on Irish food and drink each year, including everything from salads to Angus Beef. Quite a lot of organic produce on display there also. I recently filled a trolley at Tesco's Mahon shop, including a few of those gorgeous yoghurts from Glenilen Farm in West Cork, and that was after a buying quite a bit at the weekly Farmers Market outside. I understand, from some producers, that Good Food customers, especially organic fans, stay loyal in the downturn and are prepared to pay a small premium to keep getting their favourite foods but who can blame the busy financially challenged houseperson doing the weekly shopping (say for two adults and two plus kids) from taking advantage of the choices and prices at places like Tesco. TESCO Tesco at Mahon Point is one of the biggest supermarkets in the county. Aside from the clothing and electrical departments, the choice in food is staggering. Take Balsamic Vinegar for instance; prices here ranged from one euro to close to twelve for aged varieties. Range of wine too is impressive. Got a couple of bottles, including a Tarrango by Brown Brothers for old time's sake. This unusual variety, which I first came across a few years ago when the brothers (sisters actually) came to town to show off their produce. It is a red that may be chilled. Liked it then and no reason why I shouldn't like it now, especially that the price has been cut.

The selection here also is much better and seems to have many of the higher end items you normally would only find at specialty shops or M&S. The only thing which bothers me about this place is the fact that for some reason around lunch and dinner time it is completely filled with elderly shoppers who for whatever reason congregate at those times and the queues come to a standstill. If you avoid those two times you will find the queues are not bad and the selection is brilliant.

There was a great variety of packaged food, but I must confess, I was only in the area for vacation so I did not look for produce. I have no comment on their fresh product section. You can get soda for a decent price as well as candies, chips. They have a very quick moving check out section and the staff are very helpful. Great place to stop by if you need to stock up on snacks and things.

So its a spar but it's never called spar, it's always o'Sheas, nothing strange there, it does everything your normal spar does but it also does DVD rentals and then there is the Post Office in the back of the shop and that's where the uniqueness comes from, it's a multifunctional shop that caters for almost all of your needs! You can get your groceries, your entertainment for an evening including a bottle of wine and at the same time you can post a letter to your great aunt in somewhere or other and all in one shop! Brilliant! I like their little bakery type section in here by the way, they have chocolate doughnuts unlike any i have ever tasted, yummy doughy part with powdered sugar and inside is a runny delicious smooth milk chocolate, so very good and so very bad for you! Definitely something you should try when you go into this shop, ahhhh I need one now just thinking about it!
