I meant to update this review, but forgot. In my previous review, I mentioned that I was keeping my subscription despite the decline in variety and service because I had purchased bulk king salmon which supposedly they were keeping in storage for me, and I was requesting deliveries of several fillets every couple of months. In March 2024, I received an email saying that they needed to clear out their bulk storage, and I had the option of receiving all of my salmon at once, or with each regular delivery until it's all gone. I was to reply within a week or the remainder of my supply would be donated. I replied saying sure, send some of it with each regular delivery, to which they replied: "Unfortunately, the season has been closed since last year but, we can definitely send Sockeye or Coho salmon instead." Turns out even though I paid for king salmon AND they claimed that they still had it and needed to clear out storage, they actually didn't have the amount all of their members had pre-purchased in storage, due to "quality concerns" beyond a certain period. Which they NEVER gave me any heads up about until this point. So when their email went out, the first handful of people to reply got the rest of the king salmon, and they wanted me to accept a different variety instead. A couple of months and over a dozen emails later, I finally received a refund for the rest of the salmon I thought I had bought. I'm very disappointed in how this situation was handled. While I see that they now explain the terms more clearly for their bulk sales, with the prioritization of ad-hoc sales over regular subscriptions for product variety and quality, I don't see the value of this service anymore compared to buying fish from my local farmer's market. read more

Superb product, great concept, but miserable delivery. Day late delivery last 3 deliveries; late or no notice of delay. Last delivery was to have been replaced with fresh fish but was not - thank goodness it wasn't a hot day. read more

I've been sourcing my seafood from various sources including another CSF, a seafood delivery service, grocery delivery services, a couple of dedicated seafood/meat markets, and the usual grocery stores/markets. The one thing I haven't tried is getting it direct from the fishermen. Real Good Fish is the next link to direct from the fishermen. Pick up for me is at a local neighborhood market so I can also pick up other things for dinner at the same time. RGF also offers a good variety of seafood, meats, prepared seafood items, and sometimes even fun things like finger limes. I enjoy the recipes they send with the fish so I don't have to spend too much time looking up ideas. The quality of the fish is generally pretty good, but there have been a few times, especially recently, that my fresh fish comes partially frozen with a bit of liquid in the plastic bag and a stronger smell than I'd expect. I tried the whole fish option once, but it was not bled well. I also find that oftentimes, I'd have to do some additional descaling and deboning of the fish filets. Overall, the weeks that are good are really good and the weeks that aren't great is probably on par with a high end grocery store. I'm currently on the fence about RGF. The weeks that are good are better than most sources available and the best seafood experience you can get at home. The weeks with the issues I've listed above give me a bit of pause. read more

It's Friday, one p.m. and I just went to my fridge, opened a zip-lock bag, and took from it an ample piece of fresh, never before frozen, White Sea Bass. I sliced off a couple of servings, fired up some garlic-infused oil, sprinkled the fish with kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper, then added it to the sizzling oil. Minutes later, after adding more salt, pepper, and a squeeze of fresh lemon, I flipped the fish over for further cooking. This whole sequence took 5 minutes max and, as I sat down to enjoy my lunch I felt downright virtuous. I had just prepared a fine restaurant quality meal with the freshest of locally caught, sustainable seafood, ranked a "best choice" by Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch list. Real Good Fish, a Community Supported Fishery (CSF), drastically simplifies the supply chain for seafood which means several things: 1) With fewer middlemen, your local fisherman get better prices for their catch 2) you receive your fish in a more pristine state (1-2 days after is caught) and 3) you help sustain best practices of your local fishing industry. When I crack open my bag from Real Good Fish it smells like nothing other than a hint of the sea. It is lightly handled and exquisitely pristine. To know I'm supporting local and sustainable anything is usually not enough to cause me to make the leap but with Real Good Fish I actually taste the difference. This seafood tastes nothing like that I've ever before purchased. Their web site says that some people find the whole thing life-changing and I understand how that might happen. That I'm being exposed to things I'd not have purchased on my own is just the beginning of the transforming experience. I'm currently enrolled for every other week delivery ($22/per) and pick that delivery up from an ice chest on the front porch of another community member. When I took my son with me for a pick-up (littleneck clams) his enthusiastic reaction reinforced my belief that I was involved with something very cool. Days before pick-up an email tells you what you'll be receiving, who caught it, when it was caught, and how it was caught. You're given the complete timeline for landing, processing, and packing as well as the "eat by" date and recipes. On the day of delivery, a text reminder prompts you to pick up your order. It took a while for this delivery service to start up in an area that was convenient enough to me to make it a reality. Real Good Fish however, now delivers to lots of communities (even to offices, check web site), making this a possibility. Believe the hype. This is not your grocer's seafood. Other stuff: * $22 every other week (or more for weekly delivery) * One-time $12 enrollment fee * $1 to opt out of certain, specific things * Vacation holds okay * 4 delivery commitment. read more

Prices are very high. They call a big order 18oz and charge 45 per delivery. Order smoked fish and you get 4oz for 15. Have to make sure you pick up fish at certain time or you have to go back the next week. They have a membership fee of 20 which get you a tiny bag to put the tiny amount of fish you get. To cancelled you have to email them and then they send you a link to a Google form. I hope they would be upfront with what you receive for your money before you book the service read more

The name says it all! Want fresh fish delivered to your door or like we did join a neighborhood delivery spot. Ours is at a local winery and they pair wines with the fish so it's a win-win. The fish is right off the boat fresh.. We know where and when it was caught. They even tell us the boats name and it's captain. When you get the email about what your fish will be that week you can go to their website where you can get all sorts of information on how to prep it - clean it - cook it. You get a variety depending on what's in season. Some things we've never had before and had to rely on the website. There are different size subscriptions depending on the size of your family. They also give you the option to add on items like delicious smoked fish. You can't beat the price for quality fresh fish. We wanted to get more fish in our diet, and this is a great way to do it. Give them a try!! read more

The fish is very good. The online platform and business end, not so much. I was a member for 2 years and the percentage of wrong and careless mistakes was too high: orders filled incorrectly with wrong product or wrong amount in shipment. Also quite a number of times they presented frozen fish for the shipment. Surely I don't need them for frozen fish. Prices increased beyond expectations, especially when they took $20 in advance just to join and paid in higher lump sum renewals to lower the unit cost. They changed it all up a few months ago and there is remarkably no transparency. Done now. read more

Real good fish, but real undependable service. And not to forget awful online retail experience. Been ordering from them for over an year, but the experience is hit or miss on whether the order will get delivered and their online ordering experience is janky af, its a google form for weekly specials and the subscription system is extremely hard to navigate. Totally get that they are small etc, but there's been NO improvement over the past year. Making it hard to plan your week around this service. Don't recommend until they catch up with the world on the online experience. read more

Signing up for Real Good Fish was the best food decision I've made this year. The weekly process is seamless, the customer service is AMAZING (seriously these people are the best and make a real effort to help you in any way they can), and most importantly the fish is delicious! Even the non seafood add-ons have been so tasty. Everything about Real Good Fish is awesome! read more

When I signed up I was given a delivery date that came and went; no fish. Several emails, phone calls, I get a fish box and it's just meh. Nothing special. Then the delivery dates get changed again. I cancel my subscription. So far it's "oh well, didn't work for me." Then the real and on-going piece began. This was 6 months ago. I have requested my email be unsubscribed more than a dozen times. Nicely. Not nicely. By phone. Last week I received an email from Emily telling me the glitch in the system was fixed. I've gotten 3 emails in the last 3 days. There is no way to get rid of emails from this company, so be sure you want to sign up because you can check in but you can never leave! read more

The people are nice and the fish is delicious. The operations and user experience are a disaster. THEY SENT ME A CAN OF TUNA FISH. Do not believe these good reviews. Instead of getting real fish as promised on the website, I was sent a CAN of tuna and mystery fish burgers! My mother in law purchased a box for us as a gift and the box arrived without any dry ice or cooling agent and the fish was already defrosting. When she called to advise them, she was advised we were lying about the packaging. The Real Good Fish representative claimed they personally packed the box and were certain they put dry ice in the package. There was no apology and just suggested that we could easily refreeze the fish. As anyone can attest, their pricing is absolutely ridiculous for the amount you receive and if they cannot stand by the quality and not even offer a simple apology when a client calls with a complaint, there is no way I would ever support this company. read more

Got to try the delicious food this place cranks out at Calicraft awhile back. It was my first time being at Calicraft and just so happened to have this pop up here at the same time. When I read the menu and saw they had salmon sliders and I new I had to stay around to try one! The slider was delicious! Not too fishy but still had that great salmon amd herb flavor to it. It comes pretty simple too because the burger really speaks for itself. It is so delicately flavored that add anything would ruin the experiencr. You can tell from your first bite this is some fresh fish which really makes a difference in your food. I can't wait to find another pop up of theirs so I can try the tacos! read more

We had for almost one year, once I got pretty sick with oysters I ordered ( I sent en email but got no reply), now I am afraid to eat oysters. Sometimes the fish you don't like comes back two times in a row, there are always some problems with a person hosting fish delivery. I've tried it but I don't think it suits me. read more

I also canceled my subscription and as some other folks said here, I should not hold my breath waiting for a refund. The first lot or share or whatever, is $22, and I went along with the sablefish and added an order of prawns. The next fortnight, sablefish again - no thank you - and then next fortnight, the abalone and prawns were gone and it was sablefish again. Then I realized - they continued to BILL ME $22 because of my own inability to read the instructions, and they would happily continue to bill me for my mistake. The nearest pickup for my fish was in a residential neighborhood that took a while to find. And $22 for a pound of fresh filleted (but very bony) sablefish? Just not worth all the hassle. read more

My husband and I currently subscribe to Real Good Fish's biweekly full share plan for $22 per delivery. So far we've received: - Black cod fillets (lasted 3 meals) - Petrale sole fillets (lasted 2 meals) - 18 Marin Miyagi oysters We've been really happy with the quality so far. We haven't had any issues with pickup. The signup process via the website was a bit glitchy and confusing, but that's my only complaint. Real Good Fish has really improved our weekday meal planning. Without it, we rarely cooked seafood on weekdays since it's tough for us to make it to our favorite local seafood market (Sun Fat in the Mission) on weekdays. The seafood at Whole Foods is always expensive and not always appealing. RGF has the added benefit of offering only sustainable and local seafood. Our RGF pickup location is close to home and open until 9pm. It's also in a grocery store, which adds to the convenience. I don't know how much variety we will get in the long run, but without RGF, we would just rotate through a smaller seafood-less set of meals on weeknights. read more

We have been members of Real Good Fish, a Community Supported Fishery (CSF), for a couple of years now. I, honestly, have no idea what took me so long to join. We've been members of a CSA for over a decade! What's the good: a CSF simplifies the supply chain for seafood which means several things: 1) local fisherman get better prices for their catch 2) I get my fish as fresh as it gets (the day it's caught or, maybe, the one after and 3) I am helping support best practices of my local fishing industry. What's even better: the fish. You can taste the difference. Additionally, they often provide things that I can't really get anywhere else. I mean, when was the last time you saw abalone at the fish counter at Whole Foods?!? The details: I'm currently enrolled for every other week delivery ($22/per) and pick that delivery up from a local business. My kids love going to pick-up with me because they get to support local fisherman AND a local baker as we inevitably buy some of her baked goods while we're there. The day before pick-up an email lets you know what you'll be receiving, who caught it, when it was caught, and how it was caught. You get the timeline from catch to cooler as well as some suggestions on how to prepare the catch. Our RGF delivery makes Tuesdays our favorite food-day of the week! Thank you so much!! read more

We just canceled our subscription. We are frustrated with the delivery mechanism for the fish. If there is a problem with delivery, this service does not provide you with a credit for the fish that you miss. In particular, we went to the pick up spot to pick up our fish and it was not available. It turns out that it was at the bottom of the large cooler covered by a chunk of ice that took up the entire cooler. Since the cooler was in an office, I could not take out the chunk of ice to find my fish. If you are ok with this kind of service, then Real Good Fish does have good quality fish, although it does deliver cod and sole too often. read more

We were excited to try this out but are so disappointed by the service. The prices are insane -- we got nine Migaki oysters one week, for example. $24 for our Real Good Fish order. We scratched our heads about price, since a dozen of the same oysters cost only $16 on Good Eggs. Then three did not open on the hot grill (could be operator error, though). So we are paying a lot more, AND we need to pick up ourselves from the local drop off point. The fish has been good, but we could get high quality fish from Tokyo Fish Market or any other fresh, reliable market, for much less. read more

Real Good Fish is an awesome example of a Bay Area company connecting customers to local fishermen and their seafood. If you're local to these parts, I use and totally recommend these guys. I subscribe to a whole fish share, which means I get a weekly share of one of the following: - whole medium sized fish like black cod - whole smaller fish like mackerel, sardines, herring, etc. - fillets of larger fish like salmon or halibut - shellfish like prawns, mussels, oysters, crab, and abalone My favorite part is that it's a surprise each week! I love the whole fish share because I get to practice my amateur filleting skills, but you can also opt for a fillet share at the same pricepoint if you just want your seafood ready to cook. I go to a drop-off site each week with a generous time window (go anytime between 2-9 pm). That has made it super easy to fit into my schedule, which is a shifty beast. Additionally, my background is in marine biology, so I'm always curious to know about the catch methods, location, and fishing practices used to obtain their seafood. Real Good Fish's customer service team, and in particular Kathy, has been unfailingly pleasant and friendly in entertaining my weekly questions about the sustainability of their choices. Seriously hope to see more programs like this pop up around the U.S.! read more

Go for it. Get the subscription. Other countries have a culture of fish markets. It's where you go to get fresh fish caught within the last couple days. This, alas, doesn't exist in the United States. Fish is caught, industrially, frozen, and sent to your supermarket where you buy it and you have no idea where it came from, when it was caught, and how they caught it. Real Good Fish is your only way to get this here in the United States. I could describe the business it to you, but it looks like a lot of of reviewers are doing that (or check their website). Suffice to say, it's a wonderful service, and once you TASTE fish that was freshly caught, you realize what fish should taste like and realize that we have been eating this substandard substitute that you get at the supermarket. You'll never go back. read more

My Friend John told us about this company that gives you fresh (SUSTAINABLE) fish every week for only 20$, AND you usually get more than 2 servings every week, For my fiance and I, we get 2 meals out of every catch. SOLD. This has been one of the best decisions I've made since being on the peninsula. They give you everything you need to succeed. Recipes, so you know what to do with your fish, Cleaning Instructions (if necessary), Forums to ask questions,i nformation on the fisherman themselves AND the ability to ask questions if you want to. They tell you when they caught the fish, where they caught them, how they are going to be given to you. You can't get any better than this. Basically, I've been eating like a king the past few months with fresh fish every week. Highly recommended! Tell your friends! Its way better than spending 60$ on a delicious meal anywhere at a restaurant. Combine it with the JP Organics CSA boxes (delivered to your front door) and you have 3/4 of your shopping done for the week. Cheers! read more

I stumbled across Local Catch Monterey Bay at the Sand City Marketplace. I've done the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) boxes in the past and had no idea that there was the same for local seafood. Thus far, I've been impressed. I ordered the small share (1-1.5 lbs.) per week for 4 weeks. More than enough for two people. We usually have dinner portions and enough for 1 more lunch. Thus far, it's been delicious. Often, the fish in the supermarkets isn't local and not really fresh. I mean here I live 1 mile from the ocean, and you would think the fish available would be plentiful and local in the stores. But, it isn't. Local Catch Monterey Bay helps make living by the ocean a tasty treat. And, sustainable. First, they tell you a day or two before what fish will be with links to recipes. Second, it is delivered nearby (in my case, my workplace). Third, you find out about the fisherpeople who catch the fish and where nearby it was caught. Fourth, you get a follow up survey about comments and how plentiful was the "share" of fish. Did I mention that you get an insulated tote to transport your fish from the cooler to your home? The price is more than fair given the quantity that you get. It isn't the cheap and poor quality fish you get in the store that also isn't on the Aquarium's Seafood Watch preferred list. You get local, sustainable, fresh fish. At the same, I feel like this is investing in keeping our local fisherpeople employed. Overall, I highly recommend it and wonder why more people don't sign up. read more

I love Real Good Fish. I have been doing it for over a year and so far, the variety, quality and service have been awesome! I can still remember, the very first order I got was black cod and my goodness, it was the most buttery, flaky, tasty fish I have ever had. I love how they give you the option to get a fillet, or you can get a whole fish and do the gutting/cleaning of the entire fish yourself (maybe you want the head for some broth!). I have had a variety of halibut, black cod, oysters, dungeness crab, albacore, clams, rockfish and my favorite the ridgeback prawns. The ridgeback prawns were still alive when I got them and so sweet and delicious! The seafood you get is no doubt, super fresh and really some of the best I've ever had. I'm looking forward to the day I get some fresh squid (squeal!). The portions are great especially for what you're paying. My favorite thing about this service, and the reason I signed up in the first place is because it's all local, sustainable, and fresh. If you care about the environment and eating sustainable seafood this is definitely the way to go. It's easy to pick up at my neighborhood location too! I love that they have added a bigger portion that you can order too-- many times I've thought to myself that I wanted more seafood in case I hosted a dinner party-- that way, I can share this goodness with all my friends! Another plus, is that they partner with other sustainable, ethical, local purveyors to offer you other items such as chicken or pork. I got berkshire pork from a local hobby farm recently and it was like no other pork I've EVER had. So, so good. Thank you Real Good Fish, I love you! read more

I am positively in love with Real Good Fish! They are consistently providing amazing, sensibly sourced fish and seafood that is the freshest I've ever had. I was lucky enough to get oysters one time, and greedy enough to not share. I also got black cod (sablefish), which is now my absolute favorite fish. I love the recipes they provide, which is great in a pinch when life is too hectic to get crazy creative. Real Good Fish provides this area with fish that is of exceptional quality and responsibly sourced. I am proud of their mission and to be a member. read more

I am so happy with the quality of fish that I receive from Real Good Fish! It feels really good to be supporting local fisherfolk who use sustainable fishing practices as well. It's more expensive then one would pay at a grocery store (for mostly previously frozen fish), but the quality and freshness makes it well worth it. I have never been disappointed, and I can't say that about all fish CSAs. The pickup is easy and they are great about making any changes I want. I find the flash frozen selections are just as good as the fresh, so if I decide to opt out one week, I might opt in for a different variety that is frozen instead the next week. No problem. They also had fresh crabs available as soon as the season opened all the way into Spring! read more

After yelping my displeasure,at not being able to easily cancel, I got a call from Alan at Local Catch. He explained to me that they give refunds for people who can't continue all the time. Apparently, one needs to call and have personal contact in order to make this happen. Too bad I had to take additional deliveries I did not want, but now at last I have received notice of a refund. So if you need to cancel, or go on vacation hold, be sure to call!! I am upgrading to 3 stars because I support local farms and fisher-people, and I like the idea of sustainable fishing. The subscription program I am not too big a fan of. I do appreciate the personal call from Alan and best of luck to this service. read more

Tuesday is fish day for me and my neighbors. That's the day we pick up our very fresh fish from the Local Catch Monterey Bay CSA pick-up point closest to us. Since we joined, there's been Dungeness crab, clean and briny Miyagi oysters, petrale sole, sablefish (most restaurants call it black cod), salmon, sand dabs, rockfish (often called snapper), fresh herring and other varieties. There is a choice of whole fish or filets. The fish have been pristine and fresh. A couple of weeks have brought challenging and odd (thornyheads? really?) varieties. It keeps me eating fish at least twice a week, and there's no thinking about what's for Tuesday night dinners. The e-mails each week show who caught and cleaned the fish and how it was caught, so there's a connection between the consumer and the producer. read more

I've been a member of the Real Good Fish (previously Local Catch Monterey Bay) CSF for 3+ years now. It has turned Tuesdays (and generally Wednesdays) into fish nights for me. Each week they deliver a different variety of fish (generally, although occasionally it is other seafood). While the quantity of the fish can vary (depending on the market price of the item), the vast majority of the deliveries provide sufficient fish for two dinners for two people (so 4 meals total). I choose to have fillets delivered, but they also offer the option to get whole-fish delivered (when possible). I am a big fan of the variety of seafood that this CSF allows me to try, as I have had -- and enjoyed -- many varieties of fish that I otherwise never would have thought to buy. Salmon, halibut, sole, crab, oysters, abalone, black cod (sablefish, yum!), rockfish, calamari, sand dabs, grenadier, ridgeback shrimp, tuna, herring, and many more! They always provide a recipe or two to help people with ideas on how to serve the fish, but I do wish they had a larger recipe selection on their website (as Local Catch they previously had more recipes available on their website...but most of them did not seem to make the transition). You may occasionally get a fish delivery that you're not a big fan of, but I have found that this is more than offset by experiencing so many types of fish that I otherwise never would have thought to try. So if you're a picky eater, a CSF might not be the best idea, but if you're willing to take a chance or two, Real Good Fish will delivery extremely fresh, extremely local, extremely tasty fish to you (at many pickup locations) every week. read more

W love Local Catch MB! We love the quality of the seafood we receive, and know it caught locally in a sustainable manner. There are multiple options for subscriptions...whole fish vs. fillets, type of seafood, weekly vs. bi-weekly. The three person staff are fabulous and they are great at communicating to subscribers with info, and responding to questions and special requests! We cannot say enough about this program! It is well run, with quality seafood, at what I think is a great price point given how fresh it is! I look forward to Tuesdays, our delivery day at Eco Carmel, a local green store. We get an email Monday afternoon what to expect the next day, so we plan accordingly! The cooler loaded with fresh fish is there on time, and we get to meet our fish-loving neighbors at pick-up time! I have lived in the Bay Area my whole life and eaten locally caught fish before, but this fish is so fresh that I feel like I've never even had fish like this in my life! The quality of the fish and meats is way beyond anything you can get at a market, and it comes right to your door! They also make custom products you can't get anywhere else, like special types of smoked fish. Have I mentioned the lamb? OMG it's like butter. My family thought I had suddenly become a better cook, but it was just the quality of the meat and fish. I feel like I'm dining at a fancy restaurant every night at home. The boxes arrive and it feels like Christmas. I don't want to eat fish from anyone else ever again. I've also discovered new types of fish that I didn't know I loved. Subscribe to the Seafood Lover's box. It has been a great introduction to some fish we would not otherwise cook at home. Box arrives well packaged with ice packs and the fish is sealed and labeled.
