Abalone from monterey abalone

This company used to be reputable. I bought abalone a few times. Its tasted right, and their customer service was good. Well I spent $405 on 6 "xlarge" abalone and I am very disappointed. It is watery, the weight varied between 11 to 12 ounces when they first arrived. Once I took them out they drained so much liquid that they were probably HALF of The weight. They even taste like water, not abalone. It seems like they are pumping them up with water to add to the weight. Not even one of these is close to 1 lb as stated on their website. As someone who regularly would dive for abalone when it was still legal, I know my abalone! These people are scamming people out of their money. Drop the water weight and advertise what people are actually getting - tiny scraggly flavorless abalone. DEAD abalone that look like they have been dead a while. No way these are 8 years old as stated on your website. Not only that, but their customer service is terrible. Ordered early in the morning on a Thursday to be delivered Friday - as their website states is available and abalone were not shipped until the following Tuesday. I would not order from them again. Offered a measly $5 off a 405 dollar order. Pathetic.

My husband found this place for us to buy some fresh fish from while we were in town in Monterey. I've been coming to Monterey for over a decade now and never knew about this place. We bought a one pound abalone and it was rad! It was alive and they gave it to us with ice and oxygen so we could keep it alive and well until we took it home to cook. We husband chucked it a few days later once we got home. We cooked the little guy up on New Year's Eve along with some fresh giant prawns and some swordfish steaks which we also purchased next door. The abalone was amazing and an experience of a lifetime. The swordfish was also fabulous and we wished we got more of it. We'll be back for sure!

Wonderful find! Self sustaining abalone farm in the Monterey Bay! Found this great place while walking the wharf area of the bay. Super friendly and knowledgable people who run this natural sustaining abalone culturing. Picked up 3 pounds of abalone of different sizes and they kept them alive in oxygen infused bags w/ foam and gel packs. Amazing how fresh tasting abalone is from the ocean. These abalone eat green kelp and therefore you don't have to worry about any red tides / domic acid issues. They are delicious eaten raw (sashimi style), pan fried, and chowders. Definitely a must go to for any abalone lovers!

This is a cool place and the abalones are high quality. I bought a "1pound" abalone for $29.95. My main issue is that they weigh the abalone with the shell on. After removing the shell and guts the yield is about 2/3 pound with a resulting price of $43.56/pound. At that price, sashimi is probably the way to go. It's pricey but worth buying to support the industry.

Live abalone! And at a great price! We came in twice to get some fresh abalone and loved it! They provide great packaging that keeps the abalone alive for 36 hours! The 3/4 pound abalone was $26 per pound. 1/2 pound abalone was $24 per pound. Sometimes they have fresh uni and sea cucumber too!

This place is wonderful ..... Art gave us a great tour, we just love the whole operation, I grew up in Big Sur, and we used to get black Abalones off the rocks in November, best mines tides, the ones here are just as good as good as the wild ones, maybe even tender...

Fresh and delicious! I bought a pound (4 pieces) of fresh abalone yesterday and took them all the way back to the east bay. The staff pumped oxygen and put in dried ice to keep them fresh. They were in good condition when I made it home after 3 hours. I ate them raw, it is the most delicious food ever! I would definitely visit again.

Kelp being dried to feed the abalones!

Bought 2 1/4 pound abalone. Wife made sashimi abalone. Was better than any sushi shop ever had. Will do it again.

They have a small lot with parking, which is fine if you get there early. You pick up a menu from the counter and order, then grab a table and wait for the buzzer to go off. The space is casual and stuff is served on paper plates, so this is not a date night place! It's really cute with all of their nautical themed decorations. They also have a bunch of merchandise and food related gift items, if you're looking for the perfect souvenir. Employees were friendly and helpful. We ordered these items: Fish and Chips - highly recommended! They're fresh and have that classic flavor you're craving. We saw a lot of folks getting this one. Not a surprise! You get 4 hearty pieces, hot and crisp. The "chips" had a bit of batter and were crisp on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. Perfect! Comes with a tiny scoop of coleslaw. Sablefish with butter - the person at the counter said it just came in today. It was super fresh and cooked just perfectly. Sablefish isn't super fatty nor dry, it's just perfect. Veggies were fresh and cooked throughly with just a touch of crunch. Rice pilaf is quite flavorful and delicious, just a touch greasy, but in a good way! Sand Dabs - DH noticed this special after we already ordered, but he couldn't resist. Cost was based on weight + $8 for cooking. They were lightly battered and absolutely delicious. Clam Chowder (smallest size) - surprisingly good too. They must've improved their recipe since the last time we ate here. It's very thick and hearty with delicious, sweet, small pieces of clam. Overall, a fun place for a fresh, casual meal. You'll need to bus your own table after eating. Bathrooms are outside in the back. It's not as crowded as the fancier restaurants. Kids loved the food. We'll be back!

Don't make the mistake of driving by and if you do make a U Turn. This place is not to miss. Staff is welcoming, warm and fun. They are very attentive and want you to be taken care of. The inside has an old school family style look to it. Feels like someplace I'd go with my mom and dad on special occasions. Don't come here if you're looking for something modern looking. Very happy with my choice of food. We had the fried calamari which i thought were cooked perfectly. I ordered the special artichoke seafood pasta. Way more seafood and artichoke hearts than pasta. So so good. If you're in Monterey don't get caught up thinking you need to go down to Cannery Row for seafood. Come down here instead.

Not only are they a local and Yelper-favorite restaurant, but they were also listed in the exclusive Michelin Guide as recently as 2019. The Good: * Located away from the wharf and Cannery Row, so you don't have to deal with all the nonsense those two come with. * Private parking lot, as well as street parking. * Prices aren't too shabby considering the location. * Service was a bit odd, but friendly enough. * Their house-made linguini was very good and worth the extra $6 upgrade. * Veggies were cooked and seasoned perfectly. * Beers on tap and in bottles, as well as wine. * I liked the flavor from the oak grill. The Meh: * Hard to complain about free bread, but just watch me. The bread was stale and not fresh at all. Even the pats of butter weren't enough to save it. * The Diablo sauce was all gas and no brakes. It needed a little sweetness and acid to complement the spice. * Carissa's penne pasta was waaayyyyyy overcooked. And so was her salmon. The Ugly: * WTF is this second menu they have? I shit you not, the poor waiter had to recite what must have been over twenty off-menu items. It was mildly amusing at first, but then you realize you're supposed to actually absorb all of this? It's got to be some kind of inside joke with the staff. No way it's real. * The clam chowder was watery and not thick at all. Not to mention, the flavor just wasn't good, and there weren't many clams. * My tuna steak was just not good. It didn't taste very fresh and had an off texture. I thought for sure I was going to get food poisoning from it, but luckily that didn't happen. Conclusion: I hate shitting on an institution like this, but it is what it is. It appears their better days are behind them, as there's probably a good reason they lost their Michelin recommendation.
