It's very easy to sign up for a shift, it only takes a few minutes! It can be a little disorganized in the sense that they don't line up the tasks for you to do, but there's always something for everyone. Just make sure to ask the person in charge. I've volunteered on days with only one other volunteer and days where there's several others, but there's always something. From preparing food to serving lunch to bagging sandwiches, it's always good to volunteer your time to someone in need. The parking lot is a bit crowded, so whenever I have to get out I usually reverse all the way or just park on the street of the residential neighborhood nearby & walk.

During my time volunteering, I did enjoy getting to know some of the families who came through the lines, connecting with other college students, and working with a few kind staff members. Helping people in the community was meaningful. However, my overall experience was disappointing due to the behavior of some long-time "regular volunteers." I frequently observed volunteers speaking harshly to people receiving food, yelling at them, and showing little patience when there were language barriers. I even witnessed a volunteer smack someone's hand away from the produce boxes. While I understand there are rules that must be followed, the way some people were treated felt disrespectful and lacking empathy. I also noticed inconsistency in how rules were enforced. Volunteers were told not to leave their stations or keep water on the floor, yet some long-time volunteers regularly ignored these rules themselves. There was also frequent gossip and negative talk about other volunteers. Sacred Heart serves people who are often already going through difficult circumstances. Compassion and respect should always be at the center of that work. Unfortunately, I didn't always see that reflected in the environment. I hope the organization takes time to evaluate volunteer conduct and reinforce the importance of empathy when working with the community.

They also offer bikes that you can borrow in order to get around town, and they offer free toiletries, clothing, and shoes to residents. They provide so many amazing and deserving individuals with a warm, loving, caring, and comfortable place to stay, where they can go to live in peace, joy, and happiness. I volunteered for Sunday Friends when I was a high school student, and I remember enjoying the time that I spent there. According to the website, about 50 families participate on a typical Sunday Friends afternoon. Children enjoy attending these events because they can do arts and crafts projects, make freshly squeezed orange juice, and prepare and eat snacks. Throughout the afternoon, volunteers reward children for their good behavior with tickets. At the end of the day, kids are able to redeem their tickets for personal items, school supplies, toys, etc. I would highly recommend Sunday Friends to any families who may be struggling financially. In addition, high school students or anyone who is interested in donating their time should definitely look into volunteering with Sunday Friends. They are always accepting donations to help supply the treasure chest. If you make a donation, Sunday Friends will send you handwritten letters thanking you personally from the children and adults who received the goods. I didn't want to donate them to the Goodwill because I know they would sell them for very high prices. instead, I thought why not donate them to a shelter where someone in need can get them instead. I drove up and an employee pointed me in the direction of the donation center. Parked my car and they helped with my bags and gave me a tax donation slip for a tax deduction at the end of the year. Sourcewise is an agency that I would not recommend based on my experience as a senior citizen…read moreseeking assistance finding work. Despite presenting itself as a nonprofit providing "an array of direct support services for older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers in Santa Clara County," my experience raised serious concerns about professionalism, communication, and accountability. In January 2026, I contacted Sourcewise again after they responded to a public review and asked me to reach out directly, which I did. I communicated with a director through email, but no resolution was reached. During an intake call that lasted over 30 minutes, I was asked questions such as "Where are you from?" and "What did you do in your country?" even after clearly stating that I have lived and worked legally in the United States for decades. I found these questions unnecessary and inappropriate. During the same process, I was offered a wage below the legally established minimum wage for the City of Santa Clara, where they are located. This was later acknowledged by the director as an error. What an error. I also experienced repeated and intrusive follow-up calls simply to notify me of emails, which I found unprofessional. Additionally, when discussing job location and transportation, my explanations about using public transportation or even Uber if necessary were not properly considered. Instead, the Lead Intake Coordinator focused on walking distance calculations, which reflected a lack of attention to what I was actually communicating. "It will take 2 hours to get to our office in Santa Clara", was the LIC answer. I reside in downtown San Jose. Due to these and other issues, I decided not to pursue services with them. Following their own suggestion, I submitted a formal grievance on March 9, 2026. After more than a month, I have not received even a basic acknowledgment of receipt. I resent the grievance on April 3, 2026, including additional details to ensure a complete record. Again, there has been no response. This lack of acknowledgment is particularly concerning given that the organization explicitly advised me to submit a grievance. I also requested contact information for the Board of Directors, which was refused. This has been an ongoing issue, and the absence of any response raises serious concerns about transparency, accountability, and how concerns from the public are handled within an organization that states it "respects individual rights" and aims to support the community. The failure to acknowledge or address a formal grievance is, in my opinion, unacceptable.
