What can I say about this place that hasn't been said before. Stumbled across this place in Glen Cove. Old school Italian deli. Salumeria . This place has been around for 50 years and for good reason. Great fresh heroes on Semolina bread. They have hot food as well, but I come here for the heroes. Fresh mozzarella with roasted peppers and eggplant. Chicken parm with fresh mozzarella. Everything is fresh ! Sometimes the line is long but it moves pretty quickly. Great selection of olives and peppers. Cheeses and all imported meats. Do not come here hungry enjoy the sandwich, Get a Roma or a Palermo! You can thank me now !

Ordered on Doordash for a BBQ. Everyone enjoyed the freshness of the bread and the quality of ingredients. The price is right too!

The best Italian hero's you'll find around. Everything is super fresh. Pic of menu included.

I feel bad to give 3stars after reading all the 5 stars review. An old man behind the counter who made my sandwiches was nice n patient. Pepper steak hot hero was out of stock, I could not make up my mind what to get instead. Finally went with chicken cutlet. Mistake! My chicken cutlet was so bland but I guess this way was healthier? At least you would refuse to eat more than three bites. The plus was the portion was very generous. Longer than my forearm (see the picture). The menu on the wall says $7.00 for hot chicken cutlet hero and the same as for combo. But I got charged $20 for two. Well, after all, it was still a nice experience at the store simple because the old man was patient n sweet. You don't try you won't know.

Great authentic Italian deli. The sandwiches are great both hot and cold. Inexpensive hot meals are fantastic. Love the meatball parm heros.

There are a number of similar names for this small, but mighty, establishment floating around on…read morethe internet: Ninth Avenue International Foods, Ninth Avenue International Market, International Grocery & International Food, Ninth Avenue International Grocery, or just what's written on the sign: International Grocery. Whatever the actual name, it seems that this Mediterranean specialty store has been open since 1947, run first by the Smitsis Family, and then the Karamouzis (including brothers Sotiris, Dinos, and Panayiotis). The Karamouzis moved it a few doors north to its present location in 1983. The neighborhood around the store has evolved a great deal over the years, but inside, old world charm persists. Everywhere you look there are bulk bins, barrels, and sacks brimming with: - Spices: all the staples needed for Mediterranean, Indian and North African cuisines, including za'atar, dried tamarind, cloves, allspice, rock salt, cumin, coriander, turmeric, paprika, red pepper, black mustard seed, etc... - Dried fruits: pineapple, apricots, raisins, figs, diced orange peel, dates, etc... - Dried nuts: cashews, macadamias, almonds in every form, walnuts, pistachios, etc.. - Grains, beans, lentils, and flours - Coffee I love that International Grocery has stuck with bins and barrels for all these years. Bulk bins were the norm when the store first opened and are so much more environmentally friendly than the ubiquitous single use plastic packaging we see nowadays. Environmentally conscious folks are increasingly coming around to appreciate bulk bins and I wouldn't be surprised if they became the hot "new" trend in coming years. If you stick with something for long enough, it comes back into fashion, right? The wonders don't end with all those glorious bins, however. Far from it. Improbably, all of the following (and more) also neatly fit into a store the size of a suburbanite's two-car garage: - Olives -- about 10-15 kinds by my last count, but I've seen even more varieties at times. I love my crisp, green Castelvetranos and black Kalamatas; the Progeny loves her pimento-stuffed Manzanillas. - Antipasti (mushrooms, artichokes, giardiniera, gigantes plaki) and preserved lemon peel - Feta (Bulgarian, Greek) and other cheeses - Tzatziki and other spreads - A variety of fresh and packaged pastries (baklava, kourabiedes, koulourakia) and halvas - Olive oils, pomegranate molasses, carob molasses - Pita breads and pasta - Rose water - Amardeen (an apricot leather used to make a Syrian drink of the same name) Prices are quite fair and the owners + staff are kind, generous, gentle and gracious. When my 10-year old privately expressed interest in the orange peel to me, one of the owners overheard and offered her some to try. They didn't look at all askance when she delightedly opened various bins to sniff the beautiful aromas within. (I did teach her to waft the smells to her nose by hand a la chemistry lab, instead of sticking her head into each bin.) As much as I detest the areas around Port Authority -- it's one of the dirtiest, smelliest parts of NYC -- I do go out of my way for International Grocery and will for as long as we're both around.

We've enjoyed several offerings here from the frozen ghormeh sabzi (while it is the most expensive sabzi I've ever purchased at $10 for one package, it beats doing the prep work myself), to a variety of breads (pita and lavash are mainstays, but you'll have to trek to Great Neck to get sangak) to delicious Valbreso (French feta cheese, found in a tin near the other dairy products). My husband loves to come here and pick through the endless tins of tea and other goodies he'll find like the yogurt. I once purchased a package of falafel mix imported from Israel and it was delicious. They have a variety of different obscure Persian/Middle Eastern ingredients that are difficult to find anywhere else in New York. They also have a large selection of kosher meats. My favorite dessert of all time is zoolbia bamieh -- and it's such a shame I haven't found a place in New York, or even in DC, where it's tasted good. This grocery has packaged zb from a Persian bakery in Boston -- and while it's not the greatest (sometimes it can taste a bit stale), it's the best I've been able to find so far anywhere near here. I've shopped here the past two years in a row for Nowruz (Persian New Year) -- they have a great selection of sabzi already grown for you (for those of us too busy to tend to the planting ourselves), and I've always managed to grab the last packages of samanu for our haft-sin. It's closed early on Fridays and all day Saturdays to observe the Sabbath, as I've heard the owners are Persian Jewish. The produce doesn't always look the best -- but it's usually dirt cheap. So I'm guessing if you're using it for soups or stews it could work but it doesn't look like it'll last long. Probably one of the most interesting facets of this place is that not one of the employees I've ever encountered here have been Persian. They're all Hispanic! And while they don't know Farsi, they are well-versed in Persian foods and can direct you to exactly what you're looking for. They're always friendly and quick at the check-out. I see in other (older) reviews that they don't accept credit cards -- but I'm pretty sure the last few times I went, I used a card. I've definitely seen the chit-style system another Yelper mentioned. It is definitely not the most well-kept store I've ever seen, and the shelves can be sparsely stocked at times, evoking a dingy old-world feel. I would love to see a glamorous Toronto-like Persian store (with items imported directly from Iran, rows and rows of giant barrels filled with delicious pistachios, in-house bakeries, prepared foods) open up somewhere on the North Shore (being so many of us Persians here in addition to everyone else who loved Persian cuisine) but this will do for now.

The problem is, most of them contain spices that every single supermarket in Huntington does not carry. So I needed an Indian supermarket! The closest one to me is Apna Bazar. The variety of produce is nothing short of mind blowing. And the prices are very tough to beat! Of course there's an entire aisle dedicated to spices. Christopher Columbus would have had a conniption similar to Robin Williams character in the "coffee" scene in "Moscow on the Hudson." Rice, rice, everywhere! I got brown basmati rice! And very affordable olive oil! They also sell cooking utensils if you're missing something. The one complaint I see in other reviews is the store is too crowded. Yes, it's crowded, but every Shop Rite I've been to is just as crowded as Apna Bazar if not more so. I don't consider crowding a serious issue here. If you don't like crowds it's best to go to a smaller market or a supermarket with expensive prices (*cough* Southdown *cough* Uncle Giuseppe's *cough*). Excuse me! :p Also the cashier section is just a little bit confusing. Is there one big line? No. I'm against those anyway because I think it makes shopping at the store even more difficult. There are plenty of cashiers here, and I think each one has its own line. Parking is ample! Anyway, I highly recommend Apna Bazar, even if you don't cook Indian cuisine. Especially if you like competitively priced fresh produce.
