I have been going to this store on and off for 8 years. Just because we work in the area. I don't live in the area. So, I have shopped Ray's here, Weaverville and Fall River Mills. They are all pretty similar. The employees have always been pretty great and helpful. The selection is very fair. The quality of fresh veggies, fruits and meats are good. But, I have to agree the prices are high! High for not just the area, even for California. We found the MC Cloud market had better prices on a lot of items. I do use Ray's loyal customer app. It helps but still pretty pricey! We usually run to Redding or Medford for big shopping. We use local stores for the here and there things. Milk eggs bread ice cream is pretty expensive in the area no matter where you go! read more

I'm giving Ray's an extra star solely based on location from the resort we were staying at. Everything else deserves a one star review. They tout themselves as an employee owned grocery store. However the employees are obviously not happy with their own business. We encountered approximately four employees looking for certain items and in checking out and not one ventured to look us in the eye when answering a question of which they all had no answer. Let's move onto the prices! I know this is California and everything is much higher than it is in Las Vegas however, aren't you in a location that supplies the country with avocados, blueberries, strawberries, etc.? You're not importing this food so why is it so much higher than it is in Las Vegas? We bought some necessities the first day but decided to rough it out for the rest of our stay solely based on cost. Rightfully known as rip off rays, you will have no trouble spending $50-$100 on a small bag of groceries. It's unreal how they can get away with gouging the public out of their hard earned money KNOWING they are the only big grocery store in town. In claims to be employee owned... so if true someone needs to take it back from the employees cause they DO NOT know how to run a store. Shelves are half empty or empty most of the time, we don't even bother buying meat from here because you get food poisoning just looking at it. Not to mention they don't open until 7AM. This place does not even deserve 1 star. It made me sick to walk through this place! With a sign outside saying now owner by employees?! PROUDLY SERVING OUR COMMJNI The prices here are absurd! Most things are double the price they should be even TRIPLE!!! There are absolutely NO excuses for this! They are robbing people! This place should be put out of service. Driving from WA back home to SD and have traveled all over the US. These are by far the highest prices for mostly crap food. OR just a few hours away has great fair prices even for produce so no excuses for it not being local! Even San Diego which has some of the highest rent in the US doesn't even compare to the rip off prices of this store. Highly recommend going down the street to the fresh market for better options and prices. I can see why homelessness is so prevalent here in Shasta. Got a unicorn floatie. This was surprisingly the only place that sold it. It was the best decision during our visit on the 4th of July week because it was hot but the water temperature was so cold, it wouldn't have been as relaxing without it. Camping in Mt Shasta city and decided to go to Rays to pick up a few steaks. The meat counter at 6pm on a Friday night was horrible. Hamburger was either greyish or straight up disgusting. The steaks were not much better. After seeing the burger no way I was buying a steak. Asked the cashier about fresh meat and he laughed and said the butchers left early and didn't know when they would refresh the display meat. I have a Rays in my hometown and I thought it was bad. Nothing like this overpriced disgusting place. We did purchase a few things and had to wait in line for the only checker available. The line was 12-15 deep. Would of left but we opened our drinks. Came in to grab a few items for dinner. I can't even describe how bad the smell of weed was. It was as if it was being grown inside the actual store. My son asked if we entered an episode of Breaking Bad. We decided to quickly grab what we needed but to my surprise a jar of miracle whip was $12!!! How in the world is that acceptable? In the Bay Area it costs $5 maybe less if on sale. Item after item was double if not triple the traditional cost. How they could charge such outrageous prices in a small town is wild. I have no idea how people who live in Mt. Shasta can afford to buy groceries here. We decided to head to dollar general in Dunsmuir and to our delight they had just about everything we needed at fair prices. They even had fruit, which was great. Their bakery is completely disorganized. I ordered a special cake for a birthday that had supersimple stick figure drawings and basic verbiage a kindergartener could have completed. The cake decorator took the order said she could do it, my family member paid for it because I am not local. They went to collect the cake and the cake was never even made. read more

This is a small town grocery store and sadly doesn't carry everything you'd find at a larger grocery chain, but they try their best. If you're coming to town for a visit, perhaps bring your own groceries with you from where you're coming from as you'll find Ray's is pricier than the bigger chain grocers. read more

The largest grocery in town with plenty of parking in the private lot, this is one of few options in town to stock up on food items and other miscellany. On our recent visit to Mount Shasta we picked up a camp chair here as our old one broke. The new purchase was cheap so probably won't last long but it served it's purpose. We also picked up breakfast items. There was a decent selection of yogurts. In the past we have purchased pre-prepared sandwiches from their deli. Those were not very tasty. First off, check out the overall POOR Rating of Ray's Market, Mt. Shasta! Today, Nov. 18, 2023, I had the very disappointing experience, with 'Megan, a Ray's Supervisor. I had simply returned to Ray's, because the clerk that I paid, failed to give me my receipt for my purchase, nor had they offered me my receipt. I spoke with 'Megan,' a clearly inadequate Supervisor, who was abrupt & Rude, not to mention Unprofessional, fought me from the get go, on locating my receipt. Megan was not only Rude & Abrupt, she showed not one stitch of decent Customer Service, let alone Excellent Customer Service! 'Megan' of Ray's Market, Mt. Shasta, should not be allowed to work with the Public, period! In my 25 yrs of shopping at Ray's Market Mt. Shasta, I have never encountered such a Rude & Unprofessional employee. Went to Mt Shasta for Christmas. I ordered food at Rays Food Place. I got to the store to pick up the food and was introduced to the manger. Brad he was the nicest person the most accommodating person I have ever met in a store. He took our groceries out there were some items that were missing and he went with me and went through the store and found the items that were compatible so I didn't have to spend a lot of time in the store. The store was clean they were very accommodating. I believe her name is Sally she is a cashier she was as great as Brad was. We went back to the store two days later to get some additional items and Brad called us by name which impressed me a lot. This place is beyond ridiculous now that it's owned and run by the employees it's worse than ever. Prices are so ridiculously high watermelon $10 bacons $8 dollars for the cheapest One day a gallon of milk was $10. Also a lot of the checkout people have a really smug attitude if you ask them a question they treat you like you're stupid but what's the point of asking a question I don't work at the store I want to know where something is or if you have it. This store is very convenient and is well stocked but unfortunately, the mask requirement is not enforced. I was shopping on New Year's Day and although the store was not crowded, there were six different people who were not wearing any face coverings and at least as many wearing one below their noses. I understand that individuals do not like to be told what to do but we are in a pandemic and there is a requirement, so Ray's think about enforcing it. Good meat department with a friendly and helpful butcher. Excellent produce. The rest of the staff was also welcoming. If you want a cheaper shopping experience there is Walmart in Yreka or Grocery Outlet in Weed. Stock up on beans and tuna there. Go for the fresh stuff, bakery, and dead at Rays. Revising my review because in the last two months the staff has turned mean. I'm going to drive to Yreka to avoid this store. Quality does not make up for the employees who seem to hate their jobs. I was very dissatisfied with our shopping experience at Ray's today. We're in Mt Shasta about 14 weeks a year and do most of our grocery shopping there. Despite signs about wearing masks, the guy working in the Produce Dept had his pulled down to just over his lips as he restocked celery. Two of the checkers wore just shields, no masks. A couple customers (including the one in front of us in the checkout line) failed to wear masks at all. I consider this a fail. read more

What can you say about Rays Food Place in Mount Shasta, over priced compared to most chain grocers . Selection not that great. The whole store needs a upgrade, if your going to get price raped you would hope the place looked nice. Locals would rather travel to Yreka, Redding or Medford to do their shopping . Summertime at Ray is the best, you have all the transients, bums, beggars and some really seedy people hanging around the outside and inside the store. At times you feel you need a guard to escort you to the front door of the store. It appears Ray's could care less who loiters around outside and inside the store and the city cares even less. I can't score Ray's any higher, despite the friendly service that is more indicative of the community's attitude than any values Ray's holds dear. The prices here take full advantage of the fact that there is hardly any competition within a 30 mile radius and are even higher than gourmet markets I used to shop in in the Bay Area. Unlike those upper end, yuppie neighborhood options, however, Ray's offers no quality on baked goods (pastries aren't sold fresh daily but rather can only be purchased in clamshell packs that are dated days after baking), no high quality deli options or fresh made, ready-to-eat lunch and dinner selections, no salad bar, and so on and so on...amenities I would expect from such a pricy place. In fact, I browse there looking for lunch and dinner ideas and leave with nothing to eat that week; a problem I've never had in comparably priced stores, for their selection is very minimal. Ray's is a disgrace in a community with a disproportionate population of people on food stamps and social security retirement benefits who cannot afford the inflated prices, and the insult to injury is how little they give back for what we spend.
