Peter Raymond pays attention to you. He asked for pictures of my hair in advance when I made the appointment for cut and color on the phone for a Saturday afternoon. When I arrived, he showed me that the back of my hair was uneven, and kind of worn out/uneven from wearing it in a pony tail so much. He showed me where he thought was a good length (for my face and my short height) and still be able to wear a pony tail. I told him I wanted to look different-- like I got a hair cut--and that I needed low maintenance--just wash, dry, and brush or just brush--with no curling iron. He also walked me through the color choices to darken the gray-- combo of black and dark brown. He mixed the colors in front of me and wrote down my unique formula. (Normally, the stylist mixes the colors in a separate room but Peter wants you to be part of the interactive process.) He uses organic color (less chemicals) and was careful to apply it. Unlike some stylists, he did not get any "paint" on me at all. My color came out really nice--the gray is gone; it's black again and has some shine. My hair feels soft. He is easy to talk to, fun, and a nice guy, yet professional. He plays music for you while you're getting your cut and while you let the color sit in your hair. So his hair cut made me look younger -- hooray! He gave me bangs, which I haven't had for 20 years or so, because I told him I wanted something different. He also used a flat iron to flip out the ends. I think it's cute. But I also realized later I don't like bangs because they get in my face eyes. So i can just brush the bangs to the side or back instead, which is how I've been wearing my hair. Thank you for a great experience. read more

Although the owner/stylist was incredibly sweet and held great conversation, the haircut and color were terrible. As far as the cut goes, I told him I had layers in my hair and that I like wearing it naturally which has some wave/curl to it. He completely chopped the front part of it and now I have almost a mullet because the bangs (that I didn't want) and he said would be good to "frame" my face are drastically shorter than the rest of my hair. It does not blend down to the length at all and I will now be having to wear a ponytail until it grows out which sucks because my hair grows very slowly. As for the color, I told him my main concern was to cover my grays, which did not happen. I've never had any issue before getting them covered up and this time they are still quite noticeable (even the baby hair grays). When I informed him after the color when I was able to see in natural light, he told me that maybe I can see them as highlights instead. WTAF. If I wanted highlights, I assure you it wouldn't be grey. I should have immediately turned around the minute I got to his salon as it seems to be his home and a messy unkempt one at that. It was far from a professional setting. I feel terrible because as I mentioned he was very kind and conversed easily but this review is for a service rather than personality. I will say that he did offer to fix my color but after seeing how my cut was the next day and being told I could see my grays as highlights instead of grays, I'm going to stay far away. read more

He told me not to worry about purchasing the Groupon and that he will honor the price (mine was expectedly a little extra bc of my long hair). But for those who are worried about the Groupon like I was at first, Peter will take care of you! He quoted me for a cut, balayage, and toner after I sent him a picture of my hair and when I went in, he spent 3 full hours making my hair everything I wanted and using every second to make sure each detail was perfect. He works out of a room in his apartment and schedules appointments accordingly so he can spend as long as he needs with you. He got me in with 2 days notice and spent a full 3 hours with me. He gave me a beautiful, natural balayage and helped me through the whole process since I'd never gotten my hair done before. So I found Peter on Groupon and decided to give it a try. At first when I showed up, I admit I was a little hesitant because it is in his apartment. However, as soon as I sat in that chair, he started his magic. He cuts with your hair dry, which he explains is when it is at it's natural state ( all other times hairstylists have washed it prior) this made a BIG difference because you can see the styling as he is cutting. I completely left it up to him and he was quick and it came out even better than what I thought! I have long hair so it is always iffy when going to get mine done. It came out so good and I also purchased his tea tree shampoo and conditioner because it made SO much of a difference. I am new to SD so I found my new hair stylist for sure! Oh, I'm not so sure he gives good haircuts? I've had many cuts (2-3 times/year) for the last 20 years on my long hair. The techniques were not ones I'm accustomed too? I usually pay $35-40 for my cuts with groupons. This haircut is in my top 3 worst ever. He never asked what I wanted or what I usually get (initially that was fine, I trusted that I would like the haircut). If he asked, I would've said long layers. Maybe he has a couple of styles he does well? Mine (although very basic) was not impressive in a good sense. I usually walk away with something that feels more trendy or stylish. He was very nice and polite, providing aromatherapy and scalp massage so that was nice. Look at the photos very carefully to see if he can provide you with something similar to what you desire because I don't think he has much range or deviation from those photos. read more

I have thick voluminous hair and I don't think he is skilled enough to handle different hair types. Maybe he can work with basic cuts with fine/thin hair. I would not recommend. Told I would be refunded for the color (which was orange) and it never seemed to happen and my other messages were ignored.
