Flavors higher than Mount Everest! Turns out that there's a…read more'little Nepal' in Helsinki next to the train station! There are multiple options for Nepalese in this neighborhood. Alas, this was the only one I chose. Personally, I know my Nepalese food! I've been to Kathmandu, and have trekked out to Nagarkot in the Himalayas, at the base of Mount Everest. The food here is rather authentic- it seems to have a heavy northern Indian influence in their cooking. I really enjoyed the decor here- psychedelic paintings of Mt Everest, stars set in the ceiling, and various shrines to the gods. The chairs were embroidered with pictures of the famous mountain, which was a nice touch. They have an extensive menu that goes on for pages. On the very back of the menu, they offer the daily specials, which are value priced with large portions. I opted for the curried lamb with naan bread, which was spicy, meaty and incredible. The naan was served with a garlic coating, along with those crisp flat breads. The service was rather aloof- it took a long period of time to get our orders in and our drinks spent most of the time empty. The place was clean and cramped, with our elbows banging into the next table over.

Very tasty food, really more Indian than Nepalese. Large servings, good service. Extensive menu,…read moredaily specials. Many vegetarian options. Full bar. Would have given 5 stars except samosa dough very tough. Interior was good but dough was like concrete. Naan delicious, had a nice char to it and buttery. All entrees come with rice, raita, and very small salad.

Deal with it, natives…read more There are a lot of things I like to bitch about back home in San Francisco or New York, too. I am an equal opportunity critic. I notice that doesn't always go over well here. Too bad. On that note, Satkar is by far and away the closest thing to the REAL Indian food I grew up with in San Francisco, the land of cheap, delicious, authentic ethnic foods. Satkar is like the best of both worlds: outstanding and authentic Indian food at dirt cheap prices at lunch time (€8.50 for lunch deal - main, side, raita, rice, salad bar, and potato salad or special salad of the day), fantastic service, and a really lovely and comfortable interior. The Aloo Ghobi and Chicken Tikka Masala exceeded all expectations and the service is quite honestly among the best I've enjoyed in Helsinki in 2 years. Smiles, conversation, a genuine interest in whether or not we enjoy our meal...where am I!?!?!? Since moving here, I've been unhappy with the lack of really good Indian cuisine but Satkar has changed all of that. Satkar is now in my Top 5 favorite places to eat in Helsinki. Outstanding! Bravo! Even if the food was just ok, I'd come back again and again for the wonderfully warm customer service alone. Thanks for making me feel at home and thanks for filling my belly with the best saag aloo ghobi I've had in 5 months or so.
