For those of you that don't know Rat Alley is the name given to Wing Wah lane in Lan Kwai Fong. I don't want to begin to think about why they knick named it Rat Alley - but that's like saying "Don't think of a pink elephant." The small lane is home to a handful of restaurants, mainly Malaysian and Thai cuisines. Back in the day - about ten years ago - it used to be cheap, now the tourists have heard of it... and we all know what happened next.
By far the coolest thing about Rat Alley is the Indian Elvis that walks around with his lamb chop sideburns trying to persuade a passer by to enter one of the many restaurants. I've been in just because I was so mesmerized by his heroic facial hair. All we have to do is give him a guitar, a tight leather jacket and some bling. If that's the best part about Rat Alley then the second is the outdoor seating and open atmosphere. It's great to sit on a table with a group of friends, remembering when it was cheap, having a drink. The last time I went we had a competition who could eat the most chili's (boys will be boys!), much to the amusement of the waiters and chef. They were happy to play along and so gave us each one of their most potent chili's. Within minutes we were all pounding the table, choking, and/or rolling over in pain. Worst. Idea. Ever. None of us won, even the winner didn't win. I hate chili's.
The third best thing about Rat Alley is the food. It's third on the list because it's nothing special. You have your typical menus, over-priced water, and the usual but nothing that strikes me as delicious. That's not to say it's bad at all. A nice pineapple filled with rice a seafood, what's not to like? But it is to say that I don't go there for the food. I go there for the social aspect of it, for the memories, and for that man's sideburns. read more
