My favorite part of the library is the online access to 7,000+ online newspapers and magazines. The worldwide selection of the top newspapers from around the the world is an indispensable resource for me. I also find my favorite periodicals as well, like Scientific American. Science News, Smithsonian, National Geographic and Discovery magazine. You can have most of their materials shipped to your local library which can be very convenient. The building, described as a "collegiate Gothic style" makes the library feel significant. The librarian gave us a brochure with the notable works through the museum, which was handy. We came for the Thomas Nast painting, but we wanted around to the giant eagle sculpture from a WWI armory and the stained glass with initials from famous authors. It was like a scavenger hunt. The space is nice if one needs to get out the house to read or use a computer, and obviously they have the standard books, CDs, and DVDs. But as a space, it's very nice.

It's housed in a gorgeous old stone building with a large, bright new addition. I strongly prefer a book with real paper pages over a device. My bookshelves were full years ago so I finally decided to borrow and return instead of stuffing my place further. This means I'm in the Morristown library almost every week, usually for books but occasionally for movies and music. This library's a member of the Morris County library network so it's easy to borrow from any library's holdings, which means you can get quite a lot. Not everything under the sun, but a large variety for sure. Yes there's free wi-fi and free power. If you don't have a laptop, they also have networked computers which are also free. You must have a library card to use the computers, which you can get at no cost by showing ID that proves you are a local resident. The library offers meeting rooms for community organizations, not sure of the cost. Homeless people definitely can be seen here. They've never bothered me, for what that's worth. I wonder if modern library school teaches how to handle this challenge, it must be difficult. @Benjamin M - the library reopened early 2012 after repairs from the 2010 explosion were finally complete, and the scaffolding that's up in Jan 2013 is for new stone rehab work. Yelps page needs to mention that Summer hours are abbreviated - short hours on Saturday and closed on Sundays.

For a local town library this checks off all of the boxes. Staff is friendly and helpful. There is a large children's section and everything is well-organized and clean. In addition to books there are some other things to occupy the kids like a dollhouse and a train. They also have events for kids like story time (outdoors in the summer) and crafts. In the winter there is a great hill to go sledding. Happy to have this library nearby and I'm sure we'll be in often, especially now that my 3.5 year old is a proud library card holder.

I read a lot and a few years ago my wife dropped the hammer on my book buying because my bookshelves were ridiculous...and since then, when I buy a book, it really has to be something I want because it has to fit on the bookshelf to buy it...or a book has to get donated to make room (full disclosure, we donate a LOT of books each year). Thus my new-found love for the library. Not like I didn't know it was there, duh, I had just drifted from its wonders. Growing up, I used to bring home piles of books from our public libraries in Piscataway and the public libraries here in Parsippany have become a similar sanctum for the kids, at least my son who reads as much as I do. I was really glad when they moved to this new location. When they moved they modernized everything and they have great spaces, study rooms, an awesome kids area, lots of public access computers, and a great selection of books...and the best thing about the Morris County Library system is that if your local library doesn't have a book you want, and another library does, they'll get it for you. I can definitely say that this place had an significant hand in shaping the person I am today. Not only did I read like a fiend when I was younger (31 Babysitter's Club in 30 days), I participated in all the summer reading clubs, I volunteered with them the day I was old enough, my first job was here and I was one of the original members of the Teen Advisory Board, which has sadly dissipated. In short, LOTS of opportunities to get your kids involved at an early age. When they made the shift to the new location, I was like a kid in a candy store. The old location was cozy, but new location is SO spacious. Especially the children's section (though I heard it suffered some water damage). The librarians were kooky, but awesome. Really helpful and knowledgeable. The selection is great. I really like their travel section. The study spaces are awesome, though I wouldn't mind some more cubicle spaces. There's little nooks and crannies to sit down and enjoy a good book all around. The programming here is some of the best I've seen anywhere. I hope this place stays just as awesome so I can bring my kids here someday.

While geographically it wasn't really that far from where I grew up, it seemed like I had moved to a different universe to take up residence on an alien planet (took me a long time before I gained the semi-maturity and necessary perspective to realize that I was the one...awkward, anti-social teen that I was...who had the problem, not Somerset County). Be that as it may, books had always been a refuge for me, and I spent a lot of time in the libraries. In my area, there were 2; the Bernardsville library...located in a very old building which in Revolutionary War times had been called the Vealtown Inn and which was supposedly haunted by a ghost (I never saw him/her/it, but maybe it was a shy ghost, or as anti-social as I was)...;and the Bernards Township Library, a much newer establishment that had the requisite books but was missing the ghost. A lot has changed in the intervening decades. Extensive construction has been done over the years, and I couldn't tell you what the original configuration of the library had been if you put a gun to my head. I also have to admit (rather guiltily) that I don't take out books anymore. They have numerous computers which I avail myself of on a frequent basis. I have my own computer at home, but the library provides a printer (and charges not much to print out copies of whatever you're looking at or reading on the computer). They also provide a service whereby one can go back and look up historic newspapers (I like going back and perusing ancient issues of the NY Times). In the back, near the periodical section (which is pretty extensive), books, CD's and DVD's are for sale for very minimal money. I bought approximately a dozen CD's recently for about 2 dollars. The selection isn't necessarily great-- there are more Miley Cyrus and Michael Bolton CD's than Bach or Beethoven, the books I saw might just as well have been gracing the shelves of the local Wal-Mart, I noticed several "Bruce Almighty" and "Dukes of Hazard" DVD's, and a Glenn Beck audio CD that has been gathering dust for many moons (I was tempted to buy it just for laughs, but I can't stand to listen to a grown man cry). Still, there's occasionally a winner on the shelves, you can find wheat amongst the chaff, and you can't beat the price. Downstairs, by the children's section, somewhat more interesting books are available for free. Again, the scope of the subject matter offered, the quality of the author(s) can vary, but the free stuff usually contains a more eclectic selection (biographies, novels, histories, self-help, etc.) than the stuff available upstairs and...hey!...it's free! Librarians are helpful and friendly (some of them have been working here for a long time and feel like old friends, even though I don't know their names), and there's a very nice, relaxed vibe about the place, even though it's up-to-date and modern. There are "quiet rooms" for those wishing to study without disturbance, there's a tremendous variety of books (of course), and everyone can feel welcome here, from awkward, anti-social teens killing time on the computer (just don't be too anti-social, or noisy...it is a library, after all), to high school and college students doing research, to middle-aged "go getters" (or whatever they're calling Yuppies these days) perhaps studying the market and perhaps formulating a market plan (or maybe just idling their lunch hour away in a peaceful, comfortable environment), to conversational old geezers like me. And the library has been around long enough by now to maybe have acquired a ghost or 2 of its own! All in all, a great place to do homework, research, expand one's horizons, enrich one's mind, or maybe just spend some quiet, reflective time with a book.
